Isn't that Trinity Broadcasting?

They used to be non-stop grifter ministers trying to squeeze social security checks out of viewers.

It was glorious to watch when drunk.  Especially when one of them started speaking in tongues.

Trump doesn't create legislation, nor does he vote on it.  He just signs it when it's ready.

Nah, I think they realized the whole "he listens to the last person who talked to him" thing combined with the "he really likes flattery and praise thing" and more people like things like DACA than don't, so he's basking in it and they are using it to their advantage.

My non-political husband, who I have mentioned hates talking politics and is a registered Republican who voted Trump in the primaries (I seriously dissuaded him from voting at all in the general, knowing he'd do the same thing for God farking knows why... "the lines were soooo long this morning when I went to vote...." stuff like that* (I did wait about 40 minutes) said "well, all I'll say is if we tell them to "go home" we all better get going and give the country back to the Native Americans."

I almost dropped my laptop and fell off the bed in shock.  Not his usual stance. But a correct one. If you want to call the Dreamers "illegal" - that's fine. But if they came here as kids, they're not criminals. They're far closer to victims, though I don't like that word, since their parents were in no way trying to harm them.

*I have never otherwise discouraged someone from voting. I honestly did it because I know I married a good person who would regret a decision like that. The kick in the ass is, even after living with me for years, it took seeing Bernie in person, at the rally he took me to (that is love right there) for him to consider him. Unfortunately, that was two days before election day in CT and four months too late to change parties.  HOW he missed the message before that day is well beyond my grasp, though.

For all the Trumpers' talk on how "Trump is really playing four dimensional chess" I think they mean the democrats.

I think Chuck, Nancy and company know very well there is a very good chance Trump won't deliver, but by acting friendly with Trump and Trump reciprocating it's causing RWNJ and his base to meltdown. For republicans in Congress it has put them in a really bad position.

Exactly, this is all win for them. If he does as he promises they get some of what they want, if he does not then, well, they tried to be bipartisan and work with him and he just lied his ass off, but it takes the sting out of 'dems just block everything' accusations. Plus his base will hate him.

I have zero doubt in my mind that Trump and Trump's witless base think they're playing 4D chess, just as I have zero doubt that they're actually playing Connect One. Whether Dems in Congress expected things to happen this way is up for debate, but they're definitely playing their hand well it seems like. No matter which way Trump goes he's going to piss off his party or his base or both.

It's not really a hard play, here.  There's no complexity to it, it's just the usual Obama-style "give them enough rope" technique.

Which admittedly Pelosi for some reason has been too dimwitted to pull of in the past despite the fact that a five year old can do it, but still... not really high-level play there.

2017-09-15 04:01:08 AM
Pelosi's not stupid. She isn't putting any trust in Trump; she's carefully parsing her words in order to maximize the chance of a good deal -- one that benefits her party, and, not incidentally, serves a beneficent cause for 800,000 potential victims of the opposing party.

This is a skilled professional politician practicing her craft. I can understand how that might be confusing after eight months without seeing one.

Similar.  I was about 10 when I first heard it.  I was obviously a huge Star Wars fan, but didn't know what song Yoda was based but on.  Asked my mom, who played Lola for me.  "I'm a man, and so is Lola". Mind.  Blown.

They need to work toward desirable legislation. What obstacles are in the way or the likelihood that the rug will be pulled out from under them can't be their focus. Better to lose in the right battle than win in the wrong one

2017-09-15 04:24:53 AM
Yeah don't trust him until the ink is dry and even then you will probably have to sue him. It will be funny to see him make an actual legally binding deal with the legislature, sign it and then walk back on it. They will hand him his ass while he will treat them like some small contractor they he can skip paying.

ArkPanda: I really doubt they trust Trump. They're playing an epic troll.

It's really amazing how naive people can be. First Donald Trump is stigginit to Ryan, McConnell and Sessions. Sessions went out there on national TV and got to enjoy a few minutes of getting to fark over immigrants, and immediately had the rug pulled under him in the most embarrassing fashion. Although Bannon might have topped his embarrassment with the leaking of his Oval Office dress down.

Nancy and Chuck are getting used, but a) They may actually get the right thing done which is to help the Dreamers b) help sew dissension with hard line Conservatives and the establishment Republicans.

2017-09-15 04:31:40 AM
BTW, is anyone else enjoying Session's humiliation?

Seriously this. Trump has a gun pointed at his own head and is "making a deal" with democrats that he won't pull the trigger. If he allows Dreamers to be deported, then you'll be handing democrats not only a powerful campaign issue for their base but Trump would also be directly lighting another fuse by refusing to follow through on a deal he made with democratic leaders which only empowers the base to turnout if for no other reason than to put a check on his power. Mind you none of this is anything new for the 2018 elections but Trump just keeps piling on the reasons for democrats to actually turn up... doing so he might find they actually piss them off enough that they turn up and vote.

groppet: Yeah don't trust him until the ink is dry and even then you will probably have to sue him.

Look, man, I know the parts of the media that were stupid enough to be all "finally Trump has at last become truly presidential" literally over 100 times with over 100 different incidents in the last six months have been taking this as if the Dems are blindly placing themselves in the hands of a man who is finally becoming presidential like little innocent lambs... but you're aware that all of those sections of the media are staffed solely by farking morons who can't be trusted to feed themselves or breathe unassisted and that's in no way what's going on, right?

Certainly the Dems are open to being pleasantly surprised here, and I'm glad they've finally learned to only make this kind of play when "oh, shiat, it actually passed" is an actual good outcome instead of a game of chicken where no one really wants the political bill to go into law.  But the outcome their chips are riding on here is that the media will play Trump as compromising like a reasonable person (so far so good, apparently) and then the congressional GOP will fark it up and block a program with like an 85% national approval rating, just before the 2018 legislative election cycle begins.

This isn't about "surely Trump is totally being an actual serious person worth taking seriously this time, unlike the last 99 times".  This is about "Senator Bob hates America's children and voted to remove almost a million productive, contributing taxpayers to third-world countries, crashing the economy just because he hates innocent children that much.  Vote Senator Alice 2018."

If Trump is trolling the Dems, it will not look good on him.  If Trump is trolling the GOP congress like a spiteful CEO...it will not look good on him.   The Dems are playing some strong hands right now with DACA and universal healthcare (I'm rather proud of Sanders, here).   Now don't go and f*ck it up.

Yeah, I don't get this thinking that they're "trusting" him or relying on him for anything.  They don't HAVE to trust him.  If he comes through, great.  If he doesn't, you have a cudgel to beat him and Republicans with next year.  And no matter what happens, you split the GOP.  Win-win.

2017-09-15 07:15:18 AM
The thing is, despite certain quirks of language, you don't really just "trust" someone; you trust that they'll do something (or possibly that they'll refrain from doing something). When seen in that light, there are lots of things I'd trust Trump to do; it's just that none of them are good. In particular, when it comes to making decisions, I trust him to do whatever he can be convinced will, at that moment, result in the maximum gain for himself.

So my question is, what exactly do Pelosi and Schumer trust Trump to do? Depending on what that is, it might not be so stupid after all. Given recent events it's going to have to be a real doozy, but hey; it could happen.

Since the Democratic leadership hasn't really committed themselves to anything at all, have not had to undermine their position on the actual issues in private or in public, and can put a nice wedge between Trump and his supporters, where exactly is the stupid in what Pelosi and Schumer did?

Yes I am stupid for arguing against giving Trump some of what he wants on his word that he will give something back.

And if he doesn't give anything back that is going to hurt him. Do you really think the people who sat out 2016 are suddenly going to say wait both sides are different because Trump fails to live up to a promise and the Democrats have into him?
Do you really think Trump will lose one vote from the people who voted for him in 2016 for screwing over the Dreamers?
