How amusing would it be if Alonso ditched McLaren just as the Honda engines came good, and he is left with poor Renault engines in another team.  Wonder what the bookies are offering on that?

Somehow read that as Red Skull.

Toro Rosso is RedBull's JV squad. Dunno why it would be surprising for one to switch but not the other.

Yes

To expand, Red Bull bought perennial backmarkers Minardi. In exchange, they kept the team in Italy, and named the team Toro Rosso in honor of the old rolling chicanes.

Mainly because for many seasons (2007-2013, 2016), RBR ran Renault engines while STR ran Ferrari engines. Giving Honda to STR for the first year leaves RBR a possible out if Honda can't get their shiat together.

In this case, it'd be Honda coming good at Red Bull while Alonso is stuck in a mediocre McLaren-Renault, but yes.

/ Like the ex-Cub factor running in reverse
// Although I'd bet a McLaren-Renault would be about as good as a Red Bull-Renault

One might expect them to try out the engines with the secondary team and only swap the primary team once they are sure the engines are up to snuff.

And if Red Bull can't get out of the Honda contract, Porsche probably could

Jeebus!  It couldn't possibly be worse for him with a different engine.........could it?

McLaren is averaging 20 gird spot penalties a race this year.  260 in total so far.  That's worse  than 2015, or 2016 with Honda.

I understand Toro Rosso, Renault couldn't supply and additional team, and STR is just a driver training program for Red Bull so overall performance isn't always the most important thing.
But Red Bull should be trying to, you know, win.

And of course, reading the article, Renault dumped Red Bull, not the other way around.

Mercedes and Ferrari are not going to be interested in providing a top tier team a power unit equivalent to their own, which just leaves Honda.
Hey, Red Bull, maybe don't shiat all over your engine supplied - who helped you win 4 consecutive championships - when your only other option is an asthmatic hamster with heart problems.

RBR also never gave Renault any credit when they where winning those 4 titles. RBR deserves to be in this situation.

Except that RRed Bull has been quietly shopping Torro Rosso around to anyone who wants an F1 team.  They've been winding down the driver development program, and are getting out of the F1 game gradually.

Since the deal runs at least one more, and maybe 2 more years (it's kind of hard to get from the wording in the article, at least for me) that gives Red Bull time to figure out if running with Honda will be worth it for them, or just sell the whole works to anyone who has a large pile of money to set on fire.

Yup

On a somewhat unrelated note, is it just a coincidence how McLaren's F1 fortunes have declined just as they began producing their own civilian cars?
(not including the McMercs)

Ah, I wondered whatever happened to them.
