My sentiments exactly.   Never heard of the band, thought it was Pink.    I don't get the headline.

Well, it made my Lou Reed quote technically true, but now I feel bad for editing out the word biatch.

Very sad.  One of the first "alternative" records I bought was Candy  Apple Grey.  Warehouse: Songs and Stories is my favorite.

And Pink is a fatassed, untalented wench, for the record.

By the way, which one's Pink?

Well, it was widely regarded that a Husker Du reunion would only happen over Grant Hart's dead body, so ... here we are.

2017-09-14 10:57:55 AM
While I'm sad that it wasn't Pink having some crisis, I'm also sad about Grant.  Husker Du was a great band and one of my faves during college in the early '80s.  I guess everything falls apart.

Damn. Numero Group just announced a box set collection of Hüsker Dü's earliest recordings. From their email, Grant was the only one semi-helping them out with the project.

Email:
When we dreamed up the 200 series that summer of 2010, we had only one band in mind: Hüsker Dü. We approached Grant Hart with a crude mock-up and a lot of moxie. He rewarded us with a swim in Cedar Lake and several years of cryptic emails and late night phone calls. Greg Norton threw up his hands at the onset and told us to let him know when something real was happening. And for the first five years we barely registered on Bob Mould's radar, sending packages and messages into the void on the hopes that something, anything might just stick. Persistence pays. Don't let anyone tell you different. For seven years we held open catalog number 200 on the hope that these notoriously difficult dudes would come around. In August of 2016 they finally did. And after a year of listening and sorting and interviewing, we're extremely pleased to announce the arrival of the first Hüsker Dü-approved reissue in 25 years.

For a geezer site, I find it weird that people are focusing on Pink. Did you miss the 80s or something?
Also, Grant was a better musician and songwriter (I won't push vocalist) than Pink.
Husker Du was an important band, it's like you can even look that shiat up.

Rest in Peace, Grant.

R.I.P.

Just saw him open for Mike Watt and the Meat Puppets back in May. He did not look good at all. He barely got through 3 songs before he called it a night.

Told my wife he didn't look like he was long for this world... very sad. Cancer sucks.

Another exceptional musician gone.

Very sad.  Mrs Capricorn and I saw them at The Living Room in Providence ... Jesus... almost exactly 30 years ago during the Warehouse tour.  It was a great night.  When I first met the Mrs, I was wearing a Warehouse concert t-shirt.

The next night we had tickets for the BSO and our ears were still ringing a bit.

Heck, did they miss the 90's?

The main reason Husker Dü was so famous is because they were literally one of the most influential bands of the 80's--So influential that between 1991-1997 it seemed that every indie band based outside of Seattle got some memo that they had to sound exactly like Husker Dü or the Pixies (Or a combination of both).

For some reason, the basic GenXers and the Millenials really embraced the Pixies, but I find that Husker Dü didn't gain similar fame over time.

Husker Du didn't have Kim Deal, I suppose. Both are my top two favorite bands over the years, probably because they were sounds I hadn't heard before I got to college.

I'm pretty sure the production had a lot to do with it. The Pixies had good production, in general, but Husker Dü, even with great melodic songs, had such boxed-in, muddy production for most of their albums that it was nigh unplayable alongside other songs on the radio (unless it was college radio, and then it fit right in). Bob's first solo album was so clear and bright after his group work as to seem like it was by someone entirely different, but with the same singer. It's really a shame that those albums didn't get the love they deserved, because they were excellent, and there's a reason that they influenced so many who came after them.

And while I think about it - the Pixies also weren't so deadly serious as Husker Dü often was - they had a thread of goofiness that the trio rarely showed.

Candy Apple Grey was one of my first as well, and my belated introduction to Husker Du. Still a huge Bob Mould fan.

My daughter's like Pink. She's more or less unoffensive pop drivel in my opinion

My band in the 80's opened for the Dead Milkmen, 7 Seconds, and Husker Du (among others).  The Milkmen were the scrawniest guys I ever met. I spent the Husker Du sets keeping the stage divers from kicking the cords out of Bob's monitor.  Grant tried to pick up our lead singer and then puked all over our drummer's sweatshirt.

feanorn: I'm pretty sure the production had a lot to do with it.

Which is odd, because during this modern age of Vinyl (c2005-present), most album Indie bands and listeners demand that lo-fi, muddy sound. Overly produced rock, like Bob Mould's first album with Sugar, would sound dated and passé to modern music lovers and hipsters.

So, I really don't understand why Husker Du doesn't get more love. So, I file them in with bands like Neu!, Liquid Liquid, Hawkwind, The Chills, Kyuss or Big Star: Bands that were hugely influential on the music scene as a whole, but relatively unknown to most of the general population and even music fans.
