I can't even get through the ads about this stupid show without rolling my eyes.

FTFA:
When the actress first auditioned for NBC's family drama in 2015, she only had 81 cents in her bank account. She had been living off ramen noodles from a nearby Dollar Store, scraping together gas money

Riiiiiiight.

The dick-sucking was saved purely for the casting couch. The girl's got principles.

This is the biggest new show on tv, won 10 emmys, is ready to start season 2, demands the highest advertising rates in the business, breaks stereotypes, is beloved by all, and I've never even heard the title of the show. I am so farking out of the loop.

Let's just say that's quite a bit of ramen.

Same here.  I couldn't imagine what it would take to get me to watch a regularly scheduled show on network tv in 2017. I watch some sports shows and the commercials are so unbearable it literally makes my head hurt.

I know we have our modern versions of them, most being NOT on network tv, but I sure miss the days of Hill Street Blues, Picket Fences, NYPD Blue and West Wing.

No idea what the show is about but I saw that photo and I thought yeah, she's that huge from eating ramen noodles from the dollar store - mixed with lumps of lard she finds from the next door fast food dumpster.

...Mrs. Coast watched the first season on Hulu, and I saw quite a few of the episodes.  Well written, very well acted, dead on the money with the writing, and depressing beyond words.

I could do with something less depressing:

"Fogelman felt pretty confident about the characters he'd created, but each time he sat down to write, he found himself coming back to the same paralyzing question: "What's the farking point of this?" "

And in the very NEXT paragraph.....

"With a massive eight-figure deal, he needed a few strong TV ideas to offer up."

And that's how you create great television!

From the description of this series, i felt absolutely no urge to watch it. Sounded like another forced "genuine, brave and so daring" whinefest.

If i want something good and depressing, i'll rewatch The Leftovers or Rick & Morty.

Not to be edgy or anything but I will have to agree and say, "this" to the above as well.  I haven't watched any episodes of the show but just from the ads leading up to the launch of it, it didn't strike me as something that would last.

I'm glad that I'm wrong and maybe one day I'll watch it but not at the moment.

I take it neither of you watched the Rio Olympics on NBC. It was promoted at every.single.commercial.break. I was sick of this show before it even premiered.

That's probably why I've never heard of this show.  I had no need to watch the Olympics as our local channel news would tell you EVERYTHING that happened, who won, who lost.  It's always fun watching a competition knowing exactly how it ended.  Didn't watch 5 minutes of the Olympics.

/Still not sure how folks can watch the replays of things like the superbowl, world series or stanley cup
// and I love hockey but can't watch watch a game that I already know the results.
/// oh, on topic: Thanks for the feedback threaders.  I'll be sure to skip this.

I actually tried watching an episode of this, but it was so obviously emotionally manipulative that I expected a subtitle reading "YOU WILL CRY NOW!" To flash on the screen at certain points.

THIS. I thought we were over this type of overbearing television schmaltz, but apparently there is still an audience for it.

This Is Us is the most self-important, self congratulating TV show I can remember. I watched the first season regularly through 5 or 6 episodes, because i watch TV, and while it was ok, it tried tooooooooooooo hard to be important, ground breaking, revelatory, serious, etc. And once they tried too hard, and too much, the episodes just kind of sat there on the DVR until I watched/scanned/had them on in the background over summer. The only thing more indulgent on TV may be the ads promoting the show.

Watched the first ep by accident, thought it too earnest and contrived (and I'm a Canadian used to CBC offerings). Gave it a pass; surprised at its success.
