Plus it definitely makes me wonder who you're catering to if you're making that assumption.

That is exactly the point I was looking to drive home.  Personally I have a "Not the US" as a travel criteria for a couple years,  this would further let me pinpoint places I'd refuse to patron.

I hope you don't mind me asking:

Where in Canada would you recommend I go for some sort of authentic experience?

I've been to Toronto. It seemed extremely sterile. Too clean. Like a subarctic version of the city from The Matrix (I know Toronto isn't actually in a subarctic zone, but it was March, and I'm from Virginia.).

Oh man yah Toronto is america-wannabe-land, I guess it largely depends on what you're after:  Formal & stuffy tourist stuff well Ottawa is the place, want some genuine french-canadian culture then that'd be Montreal (which has a lot of sweet historic stuff too).  Want to be on the west coast without all the americans?  Vancouver for sure.  Feel like eating a lot of fish?  Somewhere in the east coast.

Want to be in America but with a barely different canadian spin?  Somewhere in Alberta.

FTFA: Like the current situation at the Phoenix location, guests were not notified their information would be shared.

Its pretty shiatty to not tell your customers they are going to have personal data sent to the poilice. People have a right to know when their personal information is going to be accessed by a third party as a matter of course during a business transaction.

There's all kinds of places you can identify illegals in the Phoenix area. Why ICE has such a hard time finding them is beyond me.

Putting your business front and center into a big political deals a sure way to lose business. I wonder what else they on the lookout for?

I'd say they've lost my business, but you wouldn't catch me in one these days, I value my comfortable... Clean sleep.

But as a younger man with less money and would do random things with friends like drive to Vegas on a whim, we'd just find the nearest cheapest motel or hotel off a random exit.

Or in highschool and we needed to throw a party.

But I sure as shiat will run my mouth about them given the opportunity

During the Obama, or even the Bush Administration, when an immigrant had to bend over backwards, and practically join MS19 and be suspected of a couple of murders, to get an ICE warrant, this wouldn't bother me as much.  It would still be creepy, but it would at least be understandable.  Now that we are going after former J1s who overstayed their visas, because they thought they were going to eventually get married to their American boyfriend who was just using them, and guys who have been here most of their life, and can't even remember living in another country, who have jobs and careers and never been in trouble with the law, now that we are going after those people, and seeing them as threats to America (all while Russian attorneys who try to influence our elections are seen as nice guys), it is disgusting on a level that can not be described.  Illegal immigration is a minor paperwork crime, in most cases.  It should be handled with a small fine, if appropriate, with the perpetrator given the chance to fix their status and stay in the country, provided they keep their nose clean, pay taxes, and don't commit acts of espionage against America.  I would rather keep the illegals, and deport most of Trump's supporters.

If you want gritty, I could show you some places in toronto that would curl your toes. Try Quebec City or Montreal.  Our east coast is nice, but let's be real, you have your own nice east coast.  Banff is in the mountains and super nice.  Really touristy though. Hot springs and snowboarding and all that jazz.  Jasper is like that old show northern exposure.  Hot springs and boarding but way more rural.  If you didn't like toronto , you won't like Vancouver.  If we are New York jr, they are San Fran jr.  Vancouver island really is a nice place, but maybe fly.  The ferry is cool but takes way too long.  Yes I have been to all these places.  Including New York and San Francisco.

Heh.  I made a quick trek across Canadia this spring and was going to suggest Vancouver and Montreal.  So much to do in both cities.  Calgary was decent.  Might go back for the Stampede some year.  Saskatchewan and Manitoba get a hard pass.  Ontario was pretty driving around Lake Superior but not much of interest except outdoorsy stuff.  Honestly, it would have been a lot more fun spending 5 days in Vancouver then flying to Montreal for another 5 days.  But then I couldn't say I drove across Canada.  :D

I wonder if you read the part where it's completely legal for them to share your sign-in info with police.  A little hard to sue over a legal action.  Granted if they're sharing credit card information, that would be a different problem, and I say sue on.

Montreal might have that feeling you're looking for: charming, metropolitan, but ever so slightly dumpy and rough around some edges.

Back in 2005, I lived in San Diego.  My wife and I were splitting and I checked into a former Best Western that went privately owned right off the 5 on Oceanside Blvd so I could do some community service at the welfare dept.

Little did I know, I also has a contempt of court warrant.  First morning, I wake to pounding on my door.  I look through the peep hole but its blocked.  I opened the door and let in 2 undercover officers who were there to arrest me.

I asked how the hell they even knew I was there, they said that there's a lot of crime at that hotel and they send the guest list to the cops daily.

That was a shiatty way to spend a day.

I would think immigrants would be more empathatic,

And there are a half million illegal immigrants from India in America

But no one ever talks about them or the 50,000 Irish illegal immigrants
