Farking authoritarian Republica.... wait, what?

Hatch is setting a dangerous precedent being all reasonable and proposing legislation that's supported by a majority of Americans. Next thing you know, he'll be introducing actual healthcare reform.

I have to wonder if this newfound moderate-ness from Orrin "Down the Hatch" Hatch is in a hope to look good to Democrats when he gets put in the big chair. Or he has something that Marijuana would help control or limit the pain of.

To be fair, if you knew you might be president after Trump, you would probably be asking for a shiat ton of  weed to get you through it.

Iirc, Hatch is in the pocket of big alt-pharma. As in, vitamins, supplements and whatever homeopathic nonsense makes money off of the rubes.

Curious game he is offering.
If he can persuade other R senators to green light marijuana legislation it'll be rough election seasons for D's.

I'm surprised it's taken this long for the GOP to start to get on board with marihoochi.  It's the Soma of our brave new world and a great way of making the mob less mobby.

Won't lie, I thought you were overreacting until I read Hatch's statement. Wow.

I can't even quite figure out whom the jokes were supposed to be *for*. Stoners wouldn't be listening, pot-apathetic people won't catch them, and anti-pot types will take it as proof that he's hopped up on goofballs.

Uh huh. That's great Orrin. Legalize it. Completely, not just for medical research. The pot prohibition is a shameful, stupid, harmful anachronism based in racism and partisan oppression. It makes no sense to continue it. Take it off the goddamn schedule 1 list, and farking legalize it completely already.

Anything short of that is simply idiotic.

Doubtful. Weed isn't that big of a single issue for voters. Best case, the "Libertarians" fall back in line.

Backing institutional racism, taking healthcare benefits away from people, rounding up and profiling anyone with a "less than eggshell" complexion, and trying to sell the country off to billionaires and bring back the robber baron days is a tough hurdle to clear.

They're perfectly fine dad jokes meant to appeal to the suburban white family. Maybe he should have been more serious, but I appreciate the non-offensive attempts at levity in this political climate.

Also, how the fark is this Orrin Hatch?!!? How is he more liberal on marijuana than Hillary Clinton ever was? Really?! Him?!!?

the numbers must be in from the states that have legalized medical use.

nothing will make a man turn on his god, family, neighbor, country faster than the opportunity to get in on some of that sweet sweet revenue.

and if I'm wrong i'll eat his hat.

My guess? He sees all that sweet tax money on the other side of the Rockies and wants a piece.  Remember, Colorado once had an entire ad campaign that was basically "As pretty as Utah, but you can drink here."

The LDS crowd (or at least the Gov't position) has been relaxing on alcohol and other fun in the state for a few years now. Maybe this is just the next step.

/Granted, they'll fark it all to hell.

Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: It was high time twenty years ago.

There's quite a story about the first legalization effort in the '70s. A few states decriminalized between 1970 and 1980 (Alaska, California, Minnesota, Oregon). Supposedly that surge was dampened after a disagreement about cocaine use at a NORML house party in 1977.

You make a good point, however imagine continued rising employment, cheap gas, easy grass and low interest rates. That will be a tough hill for the opposition to climb.

I think something good will happen for healthcare legislation, please let that be so...
