I don't understand this need for an upgrade NOW NOW NOW.

Did your phone break the instant this new model was announced?

The component with the biggest supply problem was Samsung's version of Apple's OLED display panel with Touch ID built in.

The yield was so bad, they finally had to give up on it for this year's model.

With that issue sidestepped, Samsung does have a lot of practice building a conventional OLED panel, so I have a feeling that they will be able to ramp up production on the current version without too much trouble.

Charlton Heston shoulda told ya. But "From my cold dead hands" makes zero sense in the context of TFH to me. Buying a new phone from a different brand is giving up what you already have, no?

I went from a flip phone to an iphone 4s to a samsung galaxy s5, I usually wait until my phone is utterly useless before upgrading. The flip phone's screen was busted and the buttons were falling apart as well as the hinge, the 4s survived physically but the last OS upgrade made it unusable and my Galaxy S5 has been repaired twice for a total of $300 and both cameras are broken. Might be time for a new one.

I read somewhere that it 'feels like a 1000 dollar phone' in your hand.
I simply can't imagine that.  maybe if was bedazzled with jewels or made out of a slab of gold.

I wouldn't even WANT to casually have a $1000 piece of equipment tethered to me.    A phone makes calls and plays games.   Why should a user need to shell out a grand to achieve those functions?

I like nice things, but not things that are nice for the sake of the image of being nice.

I use my phone for a lot more things then games and phone calls. I do use it like a small computer.
But yeah, $1000 seems a bit excessive.

Now that I've finally paid off my phone with my plan, I was curious to see what the new iPhone had in store because I didn't want to get a 7 with no headphone jack, but I would like a new phone with more memory and a new camera. This new iPhone is pretty but doesn't seem like it's worth it. I went from Blackberry (I only used it as a phone and messenger) to iPhone 4 to iPhone 6. I think it's time to start looking at other brands.

ooooo....Just when I was thinking with my Nexus 6 battery getting weak, I'll need to spring for the next Pixel.

Off to iFixIt to do research.  (Those repairs don't always go 100% well.)

I actually kinda want one of the Samsung devices. I have to write shiat down a lot, and it would be so nice to have something where you had a stylus and a way to hand-write shiat without having to tap on the keyboard or fight with shiatty voice-to-text.

It's not terribly difficult to replace. Just have to get past the adhesive on the thin plastic backing, rest is easy peasy.

Screen isn't very difficult either. Not as easy as my old HTC Thunderbolt, which you could quite literally pop off the back and swap out the battery. Could even replace just the static glass vs the whole screen if you wanted to (Thunderbolt).

90 million people are diehard Apple fanboyz who are desperately clinging to their inferior devices out of some misguided sense of loyalty to Apple?

I always just wanted a Matrix phone that shot out like a switchblade. I know someone made them but they didn't catch on. I don't need a curved screen or face recognition to be the envy of my hipster yuppie friends.

I don't upgrade very often (never less than 24 months), the battery life (even if you have a removable with good replacement) is going to get progressively worse throughout its life and eventually that gets annoying.

This is why i decided to splurge and spend a whopping $180 to buy a phone with a 5000 mAh battery.

Am I the only one here who lives and dies by their phone?

Team chat, calendar, email, travel, Evernote, ordering shiat from Amazon... and that's just work stuff.  Yes, I could just open my laptop... or I can leave it in my bag/on my desk and carry this little pocket supercomputer around for times when I don't need to present or be dorking around on an internal web app or Excel.

/shiat, I bought an Apple Watch specifically for wearing in warehouses because I can't hear or feel my phone buzzing in my pocket when I'm on the floor.  It works, too.

Phone calls, time of day, what day it is, occasionally camera (horizontally only).

The video that autoplays when you open tfa is the exact BS hyperbole that people complain about when a new iphone comes out. Almost the first thing out of his mouth is that the screen is the best screen ever seen or delivered in a smartphone. That is objectively not true, stolen and paraphrased:

Both phones feature 5.8" OLED screens with the iPhone X coming in at 2436 x 1125 for 458 pixels per inch, while the Samsung Galaxy S8's screen is 2960 x 1440 for 570 pixels per inch, so Samsung's phone is higher-resolution and sharper.

I dig the look of it too (I'm a sucker for oled screens that fit any shape, I love the cutout for the speakers and sensors) but seriously people say the dumbest shiat whenever a new iphone comes out.

Pretty much this with texting more than phone calls, a bit of browsing Fark, audibooks/podcasts and occasionally solitaire.

Same. I do a lot of presentations, meetings, and work in weird places. Having a good phone is absolutely essential.
