At 3am...I have a suspicion driver education is not the issue here.  Well, aside from 'don't drink and drive asshole.'

Traffic cams are still bullshiat, but if they are detecting inebriated assholes who will cause head on collisions, well so be it.

If you know you have a large population of mush-brained drivers, you design the roads differently.  No more 55mph 8-lane boulevard surface streets with left turn arrows.

Yeah, I kind of wish they had stuff like this everywhere, mainly as a guard preventing bad drivers from ever renewing their licenses.

TL:DR; I watched an old lady try to drive the wrong way out a single-lane entrance to a parking lot, freeze-up, and block the entrance to a parking lot.

It's a problem in areas with shiatty traffic design.  If an area has dozens of wrong-way drivers every year (like Phoenix does), the problem is the design of the roads.

^^^^These^^^THESEITY^^^These

Obviously. A few drunks, I can see--but dozens?

Instead of "flashing" drivers who are going the correct way warning of a "traffic hazard" while the cops race to the scene--why don't you flash the drivers going the wrong way?

"You're going the WRONG WAY on a ONE WAY road."
"PULL OVER NOW!"

Add some well-lit, very visible pull-offs with access to side roads which will get you back to the correct road you need to be on.

Oh right, traffic laws are not about prevention--it's about punishment.

If you want to generate more revenue--create more criminals.

FrancoFile: If you know you have a large population of mush-brained drivers, you design the roads differently. No more 55mph 8-lane boulevard surface streets with left turn arrows.

I'd argue that some of their intersections are to blame.  Here is one where an arterial street meets up with two one-way frontage roads.  Drivers wanting to make a left turn wait in a holding area outside of the intersection.  When the light turns green, they have to drive past the first frontage road and turn down the second.  I could see how somebody drunk or dumb might turn too early.  Doesn't help that they only have the single light bar for the intersection.

Drivers going down the right-hand side of the wrong frontage road will eventually hit a fork that veers down to the freeway.  Blam.  Accident waiting to happen.

Yes, that.  Exactly.  Bad design.  The only reason they build it that way is because they have land to burn.

I wonder if using a double-crossover intersection might help.  It would create a barrier that would prevent drivers from turning left at the first frontage road.

The only improvement I'd suggest would be to add some in-ground red lights at each crossover point as an extra visual aid.

Arizona has a high degree of retired americans.  It is basically Florida west.  I'm not sure when "closing time" is in Phoenix, but signage doesn't overide alcohol.
