OSU fan here and I kind of agree. It was classless but the best way to stop it is to not lose.

So sick of this world we've created where everyone has to apologize for everything.  I wish someone who gets yelled at for offending someone, would just turn around and say "Like it, biatches".  Let their outrage consume them and just move on.  It was funny when he did it and it's funny now.  Damn disappointed he apologized.
I don't remember anyone from OSU apologizing for getting together and singing their school fight song on OU's field after they won last year.  Clearly disrespectful, but I don't remember anyone crying about it.
It's college football, Geez!  Don't they have anything more pressing in their lives to worry about.

You're talking about a sport where grown adults threaten the lives of 20 year old kids (usually kickers) pretty regularly. Emotions run high and logic runs low.

I agree, the best way to stop tha type of thing from happening is to win.
Although another way is to not win enough that people get excited when they beat you.
/ I don't believe it for a second that he didn't know what he was doing and its implications. Nice of him to apologize though.

Yeah. Kids do dumb shiat especially with a huge rush of emotion. I'm glad he owned up to it.

My actual alma mater subscribes to your second method of avoiding this kind of thing. I doubt we'll ever see that OU flag on the OSU midfield (Ohio U).

Subby here. Thought I would share this because myself,  like other Okie farkers around the Norman area,  have been inundated with this coverage of him planting the flag. It is now Tuesday,  and more than likely at least one of the tv stations (KWTV I'm looking at you) here will revisit this today in the main news then sports.

/ granted,  tOSU standing midfield last year and singing the alma mater was in bad taste,  but as my mom said,  two wrongs don't make a right.

Yeah, I don't like it and I'm glad we didn't do it to them but I can't really complain since the easiest way to avoid that in the first place is to win. There are bigger crimes in the world.

That said, I'm a huge fan of the way Barry Sanders conducted himself while at the same time I love rivals twisting the knife with one another. Illinois - Michigan State, Notre Dame - Michigan State, Michigan - Michigan State (a stake) all have a recent history of doing that with one another, not that Illinois and Michigan State are really rivals though mind you. All of those incidents had repercussions that played out during the game and were cited afterwards or had a hand in events the next time those teams played. Just part of the beautiful tapestry that is college football.

I remember seeing videos of Carmen Ohio being sung but that wasn't at midfield, that was on the sidelines. Win or lose, that gets sung every game and never at midfield either home or away. Am I forgetting something or maybe I never saw it?

This is the thing to remember, they are college students and as such do dumb shait, we all did no matter how much some people deny it.  I did not realize the winner of OU-Texas planted the flay mid field either so I suspect this is what got the better of Baker and given his stats and how much he has done on the field I say let him have his fun.

Payback is fair game.  I might have an issue with it (a big MIGHT) if that hadn't happened last year, but since they did that, they brought it on themselves.  Grow up Buckeyes.

Interesting fun fact about Ohio State.  They have the only mascot in college football that is female.  A crossdressing one at that.  The nut is the female part of the tree, so all buckeyes are in fact female.

I'm a little confused as to why anybody would apologize for something that didn't take place, a number of incorrect statements are present in just that one sentence.

The whole thing is dumb, people invent acts which never happened to justify stupidity that isn't really all that bad in the grand scheme of things and then somebody else comes in and issues corrections which will most likely be ignored and then that person feels dumb for even saying anything in the first place and I'm still waiting for my damn package to arrive but I'm done typing now. Ugh, I feel like I'm in the Politics Tab dealing with the poop eaters.

Coming from a OU fan and an Okie. What WoodyHayes is talking about and is correct about, is that Carmen Ohio is not the OSU fight song. The did this on the sidelines and they do this after every game, win or lose. It's not like they did this to disrespect OU. They do this everywhere and have for quite some time.

Midfield?  I never said anything about midfield.

Anywho... the whole thing seems incredibly silly.  When we (OK State) beat OU years ago, our fans actually stormed the field and we carried off huge chunks of the turf.  And nobody cried about it and nobody apologized.  I know, crazy times back then....

It surprises me in that usually that level of classlessness is shown by SEC teams.

Ok- so you're just wrong about it being disrespectful. Does the QB for OU plant a flag in the turf after every game as part of a win or lose tradition*?

*i don't give a shiat that he did it - just stop making up fake justifications. It doesn't even require a justification

Yup - I recall an OSU receiver in an interview when asked if they prepped differently for the game with their rivals at Michigan, replied "they're just another team": said quote was on every bulletin board in the UM lockerroom and they won the following game (oh for the days when Michigan could beat OSU!)

How about people stop being dicks for the hell of it?  The only difference in previous decades is that more people just let other people be jackasses without pointing it out.  Now - gasp - people are actually saying something.  Oh noes!

Being a classless douchecanoe actually gets a reaction today.  If that offends you, ask yourself the question you threw at everyone else - don't you have anything more pressing in your life to worry about?

If I remember correctly you're thinking of Ken-Yon Rambo, I'm pretty sure it was him but it could have been David Boston.

It doesn't matter though, John "I chew my farking nails on the sidelines against Michigan" Cooper really did say that Michigan was "just another game." When your own coach pretends that it doesn't matter and then takes three undefeated teams into the Michigan game and proceeds to lose all three times, two of them to inarguably inferior teams on paper, the specific player is irrelevant. When it is so bad that your school's president declares a 13-13 tie to be "one of our greatest wins," again the player is irrelevant.

As said above me that one was in Columbus, I actually took one of our Iraqis to that game. Hell of an introduction to college football I'd say.

Now that you say it though something about Wisconsin does ring a bell from somewhere. You're not a bullshiatter and me having a vague recollection means it happened, sometime after 2005 sounds right.

That is a whole other kettle of fish.  That should have been a 'booted off the team' offense.  I live in the Columbus area and am a Wisco grad.  I respect the program for how great they are and how great they have been, but I know there was a back and forth (and my alma matter was just as guilty).  The first decade I lived here Wisconsin owned Ohio State (especially here) and I loved it.  They always play them tough, but there is an "Ohio State factor" that has always bothered me.  It's not just Ohio State, it's also Notre Dame, Michigan, and a handful of other schools that reputation and history are worth points in the rankings.  From Urban Meyer's own mouth, a team that doesn't win it's conference championship doesn't deserve to be in the National title conversation.  No matter the results Ohio State shouldn't have been in the playoffs the year they won and most definitely shouldn't have been in the playoffs last year.  They went over a team that beat them and won the conference title.

//Wisconsin has an Ohio State type schedule this year and outside of Michigan should be undefeated going into the big 10 championship

Oh I can't say anything other than Robert Reynolds definitely should have been tossed.

Ohio State and Wisconsin have had one of the better rivalries in the country since the turn of the millennium and for all the general success that Wisconsin has had, that program still doesn't get the respect it deserves. As vastly underappreciated as I feel Bill Snyder is, Barry Alvarez isn't really all that far behind in that regard. I think most people probably sort of take for granted that Wisconsin is a top fifteen to top three program in a good year without realizing where they were not all that long ago.

Have you ever been to a game here?

Saw Ron Dayne destroy OSU in the second half one year.  Have seen a few other non Wisconsin games.  Was openly threatened in the parking lot.  Been a visiting fan in more than a dozen pro and college venues.  Columbus and Cleveland were by far the worst.  Oddly Cleveland was also a good experience (late season after the Browns had been eliminated).  Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, Iowa, Lions, Bengals, Texans, Cowboys, Chiefs, Bears, Colts, Texans.  All fun and friendly rivalries.  Ohio State and the Browns, not so much.

The shoe is a fascinating place to see a game, but not friendly to opposing fans.

Also, somewhat CSB.  Alvarez was starting coaching the same year I was a Freshman.  At freshman orientation he was there, not as a coach, but as the parent of his daughter who was also an incoming freshman.  He sat across me at breakfast and we talked for nearly an hour.  At one point I asked him if we would win any games that year.  He said maybe.  We were 1-10 that year IIRC.

mjbok: WoodyHayes: mjbok: WoodyHayes: Also...um...Robert Reynolds. :(

///Won't be
////Probably would get excluded from the playoffs anyway.

Just waiting on the pizza and bullshiatting.

I lived by the stadium for a year and had friends in the house for many years and despite being a huge fan of the team, you're pretty spot on with OSU fans being generally awful to opposing fans. In my experience it's more being loud and assholes (insulting your wife while hiding in a crowd of 100 people, calling girls ugly, cursing as much as possible) than outright violence, but I wouldn't be shocked by that. It's a huge school in a big city and the stadium is right off of campus so you almost have to walk through student communities to get to get there. Pit those factors against a hearty tradition of drinking way too heavily at 8 am or earlier and you see some of the worst in people.

I love the team and grew up cheering for them but get very frustrated with their fans (because of this and the constant demand for a perfect season).

Adult OSU fans, by and large, are nice folks who will share their BBQ and beer with you even if you're an opposing fan (not UM, obviously). The younger demographic tend to be the biggest offenders.

Not going to pretend this stuff doesn't happen.

Note - I once watched a guy throw an unopened can of beer into the door of a car with Michigan stickers on it. Put a huge dent (like significant, not a ding). A cop was five feet away and literally turned the other direction and pretended he didn't see it.
