Linguists were quick to pick up on the unusual construction: The American Dialect Society, a group of linguists and language experts, named "9/11" its 2001 Word of the Year for its widespread popularity.

Didn't realize there was a word of the year.  What's this year's word of the year?  "Howbowdah"?

I think it's really just because it's easier to say than any combination of "World Trade Center Attacks of September 11th."  It was such a monumental event that anybody over a certain age knows exactly what 9/11 means, and it's been referred to so frequently in the intervening years that the shorthand just makes sense.  It also rolls off the tongue quite well...

"Pearl Harbor" is shorthand too in its own way.  Most people still know what that means, but my guess is fewer people know the date anymore, so calling it 12/7 would be sort of silly.  The same may happen to 9/11 in the future when the event recedes from living memory.

Whenever I need to remember that date I have to think of FDR's opener in the speech.

Maybe "September 11th" isn't used as much anymore.

That and D-Day.

It's easier for me to just say: "The day I sat on my couch in numbed silence until noon and then summoned the energy to go to work where I listened to people quietly cry for hours before I went to the bar that night and shouted at the televisions with friends and strangers before going home to weep on my couch and pass out, waking up the next morning to savor those 3 precious seconds when I didn't remember exactly what had happened, and then I remembered, and my innocence and naïveté was gone forever."

It's just easier for me. Rolls off the tongue.

I associate "nine eleven" with the conspiracies (mostly) and "September eleventh" with the attacks. Depends on context for me, though.

I can remember Pearl Harbor's date, but I'm honestly not sure how much my ex-SIL's birthday being December 7 has to do with it.

I think you're right that the scope of it pushed it from the "Oklahoma City bombing" level of parlance to the "D-Day" category. On top of the multiple choice geography, the fact that plane crashes end up referred to by flight number seems like a likely factor too.

The terrorists won nothing. Amurica won an excuse to keep themselves in a state of fever-pitch righteous indignation, hatred and rabid,mouth-foaming nationalism.

America won an illusion of being "oppressed" which has allowed it to oppress others with complete impunity for twenty years.

What did the terrorists win? Stephen Green? Robert farking Bales, and a million more Americans just like him? The massacre of their civilian population by drones, not to mention the millions maimed?

Tell me exactly what prize the "terrorists" "won" on 9/11.

So, what are you even babbling about?

Knee-jerk, astroturf-style bleating about your president of less than a year in response to a statement about a problem that started nearly twenty years and four elections ago. Yep, you're that guy.
