This is from the GOP playbook.  They never admit defeat.  Everything's a win.  You can piss on their feet and they'll tell you it's raining.

2017-09-12 06:49:03 AM
we likely - almost certainly - are not going to have another debt ceiling discussion until well into 2018," said Mr. McConnell.

So... literally right at the end of the midterm cycle, a month or two preceding voters actually going to the ballots in the midterm elections?

Yeah, reeeeeeal GOP victory on that one, chuckles.

Maximum Attainder for Mitch McConnell. Maximum Attainder.

No. He isn't up for reelection until 2020

PT Barnum comes to mind yet again.

McConnell is a shiatbird, but he has held power for a long time by knowing his constituency. And that is all he actually cares about: himself.

So Mitch's line here is to wink slyly and say 'Oh we didn't get rolled quite as hard as everyone says we did!'  That's a pretty thin reed there Senator.

With all the agencies that Trump is gutting, wtf do they need an increase?  Work within your farking means.  Yes, that includes the military.

This really isn't the executive's fault. It's Congress who is refusing to fulfill their obligations.

And the debt limit fight would now be pushed into a difficult midterm election year when Republicans might be even more averse.

An eighteen month extension now would have put the next debt limit fight in the spring of 2018, which is primary season for the mid-term elections.  Can't see how that would help the Dems.

And don't worry, Mitch.  Chuck and Nancy know your ONLY priority is to make sure they "lose".

The should also know Trump will turn on his new BFFs at the drop of a hat too.

Mitch has made a career of doing this same thing. I read a book about the Turtle and he will propose legislation then vote against it. He looks for nothing to change outside of the name on a few govt buildings.

Um, given that we're now (nearly) in the fall of 2017, I think you're off by a year.

But since this is Fark: "Dude, do you even time?"

What agencies has Trump "gutted?"  No budgets have been slashed, nobody's laid off.  Yes, there are hundreds of unfilled jobs but millions of federal employees who have gotten layoff notices.

State Department and EPA

By not filling top level positions and chasing out (or freezing out in the case of State) experienced leaders, you effectively hobble the ability of the department to fulfill its mission.  I'll be charitable assume that you're not being pedantic about "gutting" but IMO it doesn't require direct, violent action (firings, slashing budgets) in order to "gut" an agency.

That said, Trump is proposing a roughly 30% percent cut to the budget of State (http://www.latimes.com/politics/washington/la-na-essential-washington-updates-new-budget-would-deeply-cut-state-1495564249-htmlstory.html ) as well as EPA (http://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/337979-trumps-epa-budget-cuts-hit-strong-opposition-at-house-panel )

Mr. McConnell, an avid college football fan, said Democrats "spiked the ball in the end zone a little too early."

As an avid college football fan, someone should probably take McConnell aside and explain to him that once you've carried the ball into the end zone, you've scored a touchdown - there's literally nothing left to do but spike the ball.

This analogy is shiatty, and I'm starting to think that either McConnell doesn't understand football, or he's really struggling to find some way to characterize this epic betrayal/loss/setback for his party as some kind of win - or at the very least a mistake on the part of the Dems.

I'm sure the stupidest among them will never figure it out. The rest of us will definitely know.

Just because Republicans are the stupidest people on earth doesn't mean all of us are.

I never understood the choice to politicize the debt ceiling. It's like handing your opponent a hammer and saying "Here, beat me over the head with this."

More like me throwing a hammer into your hands as the cops show up and me screaming that you threatened me with it. Even when the GOP loses debt ceiling fights they lose nothing more than if the fight never happened.
