the main barrier between him and a fate he surely wants to avoid: impeachment.

You're assuming he *wants* to avoid it. Think of the ratings!

Unless the Dems decide they don't wanna impeach, preferring to let the GOP roast in hellfire till the midterms.

The Republicans have the loud and proud racist, sexist, bigoted, fear monger they've always wanted in the White House. They'll do everything they can to help Trump win a second term.

Yeah, there's a very small chance of impeachment as long as he has an (R) behind his name.
Wait until Fox news refers to him as Trump (D) and you'll know that the tide has turned.

There's only one thing surer than that Trump will continue to be a corrupt, incompetent, and ineffectual President: and that is that the Democrats will invent a way to squander the opportunity it presents.

Impeachment is only gonna happen in one of two ways.  First option, Trump's behavior starts to seriously hurt reelection chances of his party, and they throw him under the bus to save themselves.   Second option, the democrats take the senate and the house in 2018, and have the power to press the issue.

I don't see any different routes.

2017-09-11 06:00:47 AM
This was my prediction.  The GOP would play ball with Trump until he started hurting their reelection chances.  Once that was the case, they'd try to get rid of him.

Unless he continues to cuck them by working with the Democrats. If someone gets in Trumps ear and says the way to filling stadiums is to give America a raise and Trump threatens to raise the minimum wage I think Republicans in Congress will freak out.

Depending on when Mueller returns his recommendations, they may be able to have their cake and eat it too.

Both impeachment proceedings for presidents that we've had before have taken around three months.  Given that Republicans are likely to be divided on this, and by the looks of it, the case will be quite byzantine, you might be able to drag that out to 4 or 5 months.

From the looks of it, Mueller's just ramping up now, so we still have a ways to go.  If Mueller doesn't finalize his report before the summer, the impeachment will probably last through November.

Worst case scenario Democrats win a number of seats in 18, the Republicans start to panic and move towards impeachment to save themselves in 2020 and the Democrats suddenly think wait do we want Trump screwing up for the Republicans in office or do we antagonize his base and decide they want Trump over Pence. Democrats hinder impeachment because A. Everyone hates Trump it will help Democrats to run against him. B. How can Trump win reelection. C. They don't realize his base will continue to support him
Trump wins reelection, a new batch of Congressmen who support Trump get elected and the Democrats stand around saying how the hell did Trump win again.

As long as he supports tax cuts, he will be tolerated.
NOTHING is more important to Republicans.  It is the reason for their existence.

I can see Democratic strategists now

See what happened to Hillary with the deplorable comment, don't call anyone White Supremacist and definitely don't use the Nazi word.
Now is not the time for bold progressive themes the left is going to show up and vote they hate Trump, we need to reach out to moderate Republicans and conservative Independents.
What we really need is a stabilizing candidate not a bomb thrower.  Instead of Warner or Sanders or Harris we need an old White Senator or a governor who has a well documented history of working with Republicans.

And we get Kerry 2.0

You mean things the gop can use in attack ads showing dems working hand in hand with the "evil traitorous Russian spy" that still hasn't been impeached so the dem base gets pissed and stays home giving republicans an even bigger majority?

2017-09-11 07:41:17 AM
There are no prospects for impeachment unless a majority of his own party will consider it.  Elected Republicans are afraid to criticize the President at all.  Until Mueller reports and Republicans react, impeachment is not worth discussing.

Bring on your attack ads. The problem is that Democrats aren't as thick-skulled as Republicans, and will be able to determine if "working with Russian-compromised Trump" helped them or hurt them.

It's not as easy as simply showing a photo of Chris Christie hugging Obama and having all the dispsh*ts on your side begin mindlessly howling that Christie's a traitor. That's one of the downsides of your party consisting entirely of unthinking, easily-manipulated nitwits.

No, but if it ever comes up, the Dems can sit by and make every Republican do the walk of shame and vote to impeach him before a single democrat cast their vote.

fluffy_pope: Unless the Dems decide they don't wanna impeach, preferring to let the GOP roast in hellfire till the midterms.

I've been wondering if this might have been Trump's side of that budget deal: the Dems get their clean bills in exchange for opposing impeachment. Trump would certainly consider that a personal win, but it would completely torpedo his party.

2017-09-11 08:10:04 AM
It is obvious.  Assuming the party in opposition to the president does not have more than 50% in the House and 67% in the Senate*, the only way a president can be successfully removed from office via impeachment is for his own party to turn on him.  Thus the decision to remove a president from power in this manner is effectively a decision by his own party.

*This assumes everyone in the party opposing the president agrees with the impeachment.  If not, their majority will need to be even more loop sided.  Recall that this kind of loopsidedness is very rare.  The earliest that the Democrats could have such a majority is probably 2021. And even that is probably wishful thinking especially since it would would require Democrats getting crushing victory in 2020 while losing the White House. (Of course if Trump loses his re-election attempt, it is all moot anyways.  I don't see them trying to impeach him on Jan 3, 2021 knowing he'll be out off office anyways by Jan. 20.)

2017-09-11 08:15:22 AM
It is a nice thought but still really unlikely.

They could do it as punishment, basically. The Senate could attach the inability to hold any federal office on conviction, and an impeached and convicted President is not eligible for the various benefits conferred under the Former Presidents Act, such as the pension, Secret Service protection, etc.

Good luck with that, Fat Donny.

It's amazing to me that anyone, on either side, still thinks this asshole has some kind of "master plan".  He just lurches from one thing to another, doing whatever he thinks helps himself and hurts his enemies in that moment, and doesn't give a damn about the consequences.  The only reason he worked with Schumer and Pelosi on this debt ceiling thing was to stiggit to McConnell and Ryan for not doing exactly what he wants.

He's not playing 4D chess.  He's not even playing chess.  He's not even playing checkers.  He's like a little kid trying to play Connect Four who keeps thinking he won when he's only connected three, and gets pissed off when you tell him that's not how the game works.

I guess that is consistent with the party of hate.
