Seriously... that's taco ingredients rolled in a flour tortilla. Traditionally, a burrito is typically less loaded: Beans, meat, and cheese being the primary components, either alone or in combination, and then rolled into a flour tortilla for convenient consumption

/Lettuce, tomatoes. rice, sour cream, etc. are all "new-age" and unnecessary additions
//Hot sauce is, of course, completely acceptable

Much like a substantial number of college graduates who feel compelled to put their education on public display through some imbecilic "study", many chefs and cooks feel compelled to put their particular culinary twist on every traditional food

The single biggest determinant of burrito-hood is that one should be able to eat it while riding a bicycle, which is to say, ALL of the ingredients go on the INSIDE of the tortilla. Everything else is just culinary semantics.

A burrito without rice and beans only half a burrito. Corn is also good.

that looks much more reasonable, other than the "kit"
I'll put lettuce in mine sometimes

"old El Paso" brand is pretty sub par. At least their salsas are. Your selection is probably much more limited than mine

I noticed that the kit comes with "super soft" tortillas. This is a new thing. Traditionally, tortillas made for burritos are made from a slightly harder wheat and are much thinner and bigger.  They don't get gluey and are bit stronger.

Those tortillas look raw/cold. Please tell me you got them hot (at the least) before assembly.

Indeed I did heat them; and after my noob mistake of oven cooking my sprouts I came to the same wrap conclusion, that the a firmer one is necessary. (bows)

Perfect burrito:

Layer as follows -- don't overdo the fillings, it won't come out right if you overfill it:
* Burrito-sized 12" tortilla - steamed a bit so it's pliable for the wrap
* Equal parts rice and beans as a bed for the rest - ideally Spanish-style with tomato, cumin and onion, and * black or pinto beans, but really plain are okay too as long as you have a decent flavor contribution from the meat and salSA
* Chopped protein - chicken, pork, beef, fish, egg, whatever you like
* Sprinkling of cheddar or jack cheese
* Small squirt of sour cream or Greek yogurt
* Salsa or homemade pico de gallo
* Handful of cilantro
* If desired, avocado or guacamole

/Those still aren't the correct ingredients for a classic burrito

Burrito pissing matches. I've seen it all.

And I've noticed the tastiest burritos have a beef-chicken mix. Yes i occasionally put rice in my burritos. That probably offends someone, too.

But restaurants that cut their burritos with potatoes are simply being cheap as fark.

*assemble first burrito

I recently encountered something that made me do a double-take.

Sushi burrito.

Then I thought about it, and it almost kinda makes sense: it's basically an extra-large sushi roll that you don't slice. seaweed instead of tortilla and stuffed with sushi rice and your fish/veg of choice. Makes it a hand-food instead of a chopstick-food.

(ah, who am I kidding, I eat sushi with my fingers anyway if I'm not at a restaurant.)
