It's nice to see the one set of parents agree with their kid being kicked off the team. There needs to consequences for being an idiot, otherwise what do the children learn?

I actually read the article, the little video with the music was a cute little touch to the crappy journalism presented.

That's the way it used to be, hidden.  For some strange reason, white supremacists today feel they can just come right out and wear hoods and burn crosses.  It's almost as if they've gotten a signal that such behavior is OK.

The South shall rise again, in Iowa, a Union state. Far from the Mason-Dixon line.
I get that trying to find an identity amongst the corn and the farms might be tough, but at least pick a redneck archetype that has a little to do with where you're from. Like roll ethanol or something.

If they're forced back on the team they should be the five man scout team against a full varsity team every practice until the season ends. Use the idiots as tackling dummies.

I think that's something that confuses me most. Now I know not everybody in the south was for secession and not everybody in the north was hankering for war to keep the country in one piece, but holy shiat there are so many confederate flags in places like Pennsylvania, Montanna, Alaska, etc. Do you people really hate your country and your neighbors so much that you fly a foreign flag whose only purpose is the destruction of the USA?

I feel that, too. But the article focuses on the good people and how they are acting as responsible adults and moving forward and making their town better. The bad actors, like the people suing, will be left behind.

That would be too kind to them, since they'd have to finish their educations at home or in some distant community. High school football is a near-religion in little towns, and the players lionized. Having to face their peers and communities as former big deals and now as pariahs would be a form of condign torture.

I think Americans that fly the Confederate battle flag do so to make sure everyone knows they hate black people.  "Look at me, I'm a farking racist!".  That sort of thing.

There's an idiot in north Idaho (yes, I know that doesn't narrow it down much) that flies a large Confederate battle flag next to a large American flag in the back of his lifted pickup.

These kids may be shiats, however a mandatory govt program (school) has no business regulating or punishing speech that occurs outside the schoo environment Imagine for a minute they had been kicked off the team and punished in school for attending a Pride parade.  (Yes i know football isnt a mandatory part bit is still a feature in amandatory program).  I do hope the parents sue and win;  the integrity of the system is far more important than any individual case.

Trying to relate to the US culture in Iowa must be hard for kids.

What's their take on women?  Do they dress up with little balls of wadded paper boobs in their shirts, lipstick, and mop heads for wigs.

crap.  Parents should pursue as a speech issue but make clear no intent to put the kids back on the team.  I don't see how forcing these nimrods back into the locker room is good for anyone involved

During the campaign, The loudest people out there was the ones saying that the Orange One will open the doors to those who intentions are on racial lines. That's why the polls always had Hilliary as the winner. Surprise! The silent majority spoke loudly as an ambush on civility. And The Walking Dude is still leading them on.

You're equating attending a Pride (I presume you're referring to a gay pride) parade with burning a cross and wearing a Klan-style hood?

Coach won't bench you if he doesn't want you on the team. Usually they will make you do hell sprints (start at the end zone, sprint 10 yards, do 10 push ups, sprint back to the end zone, do 10 squat thrusts, sprint 20 yards, do 20 push ups, sprint back to the end zone, do 20 squat thrusts, etc., etc. until you puke, quit, or die.

I have no problem with them getting kicked off the team.

Being a member of the team is a privilege. Behavior that threatens a team member is an acceptable basis for that privilege to be taken away.

As for the school? It's a bit tricky. Threatening violence isn't protected speech. I'm no expert in 1st Amendmeny law, so I'm not sure where this particular act falls.

These teenagers did something stupid, and it is up to the community to stand together and point in the right direction. I went to college in Iowa and found some racism there. Not a lot. I encountered people who expressed antiblack invective who had never encountered an actual black person. In many parts of Iowa at that time multiculturalism meant Swedes and Norwegians living together. The leadership in the community needs to step up.

Yes, when taken from the context of rural Idaho where this article is set it was presumed that both could be considered equally grevious so the example was used as it was presumed that a Pride event would be identified as abprotected activity by the current audience.  Happy?
