Welcome to Farktography!

This Week's Theme: "In Memoriam: Night Skies, Landscapes, & Abandoned Places."

Description
: Farktographer soosh passed away this week unexpectedly. He was with Farktography from nearly the beginning, starting with contest #5, inspiring and assisting countless Farktographers along the way. As a memorial to him, show us your best photos of the night sky, landscapes, and/or abandoned places--the photos soosh was best known for. Examples of his work can be seen here: http://bibliostats.com/farktography/user/soosh Note: For this week's theme, you can employ exposure stacking for night sky photos.

We ask that before submitting your photos you read and adhere to the following submission rules, including but not limited to the following:
- Submissions must be photographs; screen captures do not count as photographs.
- You must be the original photographer of your entry. Do not submit anyone else's photography as your own.
- You are only allowed to enter a photograph once. Do not submit the same photo to another contest later.
- You may enter 3 photos in each contest as long as each photo is of a different composition.
- Please post each photo separately so they can be voted for individually.

Please note:
The overarching ideal behind Farktography is that image corrections are acceptable, while adding or removing elements in the image (e.g. removing telephone poles, adding Elvis) is not acceptable. Levels, curves, contrast, saturation, crop, and black-and-white conversion tools may be used judiciously, but not to cartoonish or unrealistic extremes. Avoid applying artistic filters for the purpose of mimicking film, tilt-shift, toy camera, etc type effects. HDR and panorama stitching either in-camera or in post processing are not allowed unless specified for a particular theme (true multiple exposures done in-camera are acceptable, however). See the rules for more information on acceptable modifications, or check in at the Farktography Forums.

Legal: All photographers submitting photos to this contest are the legal copyright holders for the photos submitted and the photos are not to be considered free for any other use without written consent from the submitting photographers.
- Drop by the Farktography Forum on Fark (new window) or Farktography.net (for chatting, critique, techtalk and so on)
- Stats can be found here.

Taken shortly after my grandfather died from the back porch of their home. It had rained all day and the sky was a beautiful color as the sun descended.

Eta Aquarids over Acadia

Visiting Acadia National Park for my first time this May, I dragged myself out of bed and down to a rocky shoreline at butt-crack thirty on a cold-arse morning. This was actually my second test frame, still dialing in exposure and composition. While it was exposing, I saw the green fireball, and thought that it would be neat if I caught it. Then, on review, I saw that not only did I catch it, I also caught four other smaller meteors. Living in a place with much less clear skies, I usually ignore all but the Persieds shower, so I had to google to see what shower I was actually seeing that night.

Artificial Aurora

While there's not much of Soosh's favorite subject at my latitude,
I do have the privilege of being within line-of-sight to most launches from NASA's flight facility at Wallops Island. So, when NASA announced their plans to create an artificial aurora with ionizing noctilucent clouds, I started a quest to make sure I caught it. For over a month, I chased locations, and I set up my equipment only to break it down again due to a launch scrub for one reason or another. Finally, I was able to sneak out to my employer's parking lot while working night shift to catch the launch.

I never got to know soosh, but looking back at his photos, it looks like he was interested in a lot of the same subjects I am. Here's a general store about thirty miles outside of Birmingham. The Marsh & Sons store was open from 1931 to 1994 offering goods and groceries to the community of Locust Fork. In another twenty years, there may be a subdivision here for all I know, but for now, the store stands as a momento of the small town life that's slowly fading away.
