This is one of the more fascinating and perplexing aspects of the Trump presidency.

If you look at video of the guy from 25 years ago, he's articulate, thoughtful, erudite and coherent. I am not saying he was Cicero or anything, just that the man clearly knew how to express himself on a range of fairly complex subjects in a manner that was comprehensible.

In the intervening years I stopped paying attention to him except for his occasional birther outbursts, so I don't know if there was a steady decline or what. But then he burst on the scene again in the 2016 election, and he was speaking at a third grade level. Nothing really shocking about that; it is a fundamental rule of politics that you need to speak to as broad an audience as possible, and most people are morons who get angry at three syllable words. I assumed it was coached and deliberate.

Now I am not so sure. His extemporaneous speech, even when he is trying to convey gravitas, is incredibly basic and embarrassing. Like this: here is a moment when his number one job as a leader is to articulate a deadly threat to millions of Americans so that they take it seriously, and he farts out that the storm will be "not good". You don't have to use five dollar words to tell people to move now or they are going to die, which is exactly what he needs to convey. Yet this seems to show he is incapable of articulating that very important message.

I may be in the minority around here, but I have never bought into the narrative that he is mentally ill or has dementia. He's just an asshole. Still, I find myself struggling to explain his clearly diminished ability to communicate effectively. Maybe 70 years of being an incurious infant has blunted his communications skills. I don't know, but it is really a puzzle.

My father has dementia, so I know it pretty well. The disease is different for each person, but declining speech does not mean you start speaking like a baby. If his speech was effected by dementia, I would expect to hear some level of aphasia: he would be lost searching for words, and would start scrambling certain words for others. For example, my father often refers to my wife as my sister or mother. That caused a lot of confusion at first, because my mother has been dead since 1984, and I don't have a sister.

Also, if the disease had progressed to the point where it is effecting language, his general cognitive ability would have already declined so badly it would be absolutely evident to everyone. He would exhibit a great deal of confusion and be unable to maintain any activity for any length of time. Press conferences or those little rallies he loves so much would be impossible. He wouldn't be able to read a prepared statement or a teleprompter. He would be unable to completely express an extemporaneous thought. And most of all, his statements would be extremely repetitive, because short term memory is the first thing to go. He literally would say the same thing five times in a row, because he wouldn't remember saying it the first 4 times.

Like I said: he's not sick. He's not crazy. He's an asshole.

I can't decide if Trump's simplistic vocabulary, ridiculous hyperbole, and repetitive repetition are the tools of a master salesman and political craftsman who realizes that complexity is lost on the masses and basic terms translate better across languages, or if he's just potato-brain defective.

The problem is that you think his capacity has diminished, within which is the assumption that it was at some point higher than it is now.  The fact is, this is how he has always been.  He doesn't have diminished capacity, he has limited capacity, and it's been plum full-up for years.  Trump is eternally this kid:
