"This is not an opportunity to go outside and try to have fun with a hurricane," U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp warned. "It's not time to get on a surfboard."

On the contrary, it might not be a bad idea to hang on to something that floats.

Trying to talk relatives in Sarasota into coming up here for awhile.  They're like 15 feet above sea level.  This isn't looking very good for any part of Florida.  Worried about GA and SC as well.  The good news is there's plenty of time so if you're in the path don't waste it!

We were just in St Martin/Maarten a few weeks ago. They still have quite a few abandoned buildings from previous hurricanes - my wife was disturbed that so many great locations were sitting empty. I guess a lot of it is still bogged down with legal disputes about insurance claims and likely difficulty getting coverage for the future. It's just about directly in the path and very close now, so a lot easier to understand how slowly it has been recovering.

We had a great time and excellent weather, we're dreading watching the impact of the storm.

Nope, Irma is going to thread that needle right between Cuba and Florida.  A lot of damage to Havana and Miami and Key West, likely.

But the real fear is Irma is now in the Gulf and heading northward.

Good luck. My idiot father believes that because he has a couple of different kinds of generators, a grill, a bunch of Coleman lanterns and gumption® that he'll be fine. He's *maybe* 10 feet above sea level and has a @ 200 year old bald cypress tree in his front yard, and for a very good reason: the whole neighborhood drains to his street, and that drains... nowhere.

I have a very bad feeling I may be spending Samhain either bailing him out or burying him :(

Well, the good news is that by the time it gets to Florida, the winds are expected to decrease to only 150mph.  Wait.  That's bad.

Very little to do with climate change . Most climate models predict the same to fewer tropical storms with rising energy levels. The reason is that more energy in the upper levels of the atmosphere create shear which helps reduce the possibility of cyclone formation and intensification. The bad news is if there are the right conditions for storms to form they're likely to be stronger due to increased surface water temperature.

If it turns north and heads up the shaft of FL like some predictions are making, is it safe to assume that means it'll weaken as it stays over land?  I'm relatively new to hurricanes (lived in Savannah for 3 years).

So we can all see this coming.  It's not projected to hit Florida until at least next week (sorry PR, you're getting it tomorrow).  But given the advanced notice, for florida, how badly do you project the evacuation/preparation/response to be?  I wonder.

So your argument is that we have fewer but far worse storm activity thanks to climate change. That will be very conforting to the billions displaced by climate change in the next century.
