Let's hope it's better than the previous season. The format change is either because they were bored or because they're trying to kill the show by making it unwatchable./

A video of quick clips from past shows "greatest hits" does not exactly equal a trailer for the new season, imho.

Didn't they specifically say they were going to do fewer shows about current events this season?

Which one?  I can think of at least three right off the top of my head.

South Park is bringin' up the rear with the Simpsons when it comes to "way past its prime".  It's gotten to the point where they're trying WAY too hard to be shocking and controversial and the jokes just end up being kinda lame.  It can still be really funny at times, but those moments are starting to become fewer and further between.

I admit, I wasn't a fan of the last 2 seasons. The single story arc didn't work for me. In past seasons, if a gag didn't land, it was just a slight blemish on an otherwise fine episode. But with the single story arc, the gags that didn't work just kept showing up over 4 or 5 episodes.

And the satire is approaching "last 4 seasons of MASH" level preachiness.

I'm currently binging SP on the Hulu. If you want preachyness, take a look at 2005-2007. It was basically a rolling convoy telling people to not let the terrorism propaganda win. Not a bad message, but one can forget how utterly obsessed with killing middle-easterners we were. We still are, but it's now a dull background hate.

Actually, I liked where they were going with continuity in Season 19, and Season 20 might have worked had it not been for Trump winning the election. I'd love to have seen where they were going with that.

In Season 19 when they first made Garrison into a Trump-clone, nobody in their right minds (with the possible exception of Russian hackers) thought that Trump would even make it through the primary debates, let alone Super Tuesday, let alone win the GOP nomination, let alone make it through the debates with Hillary, let alone win the election. Making Garrison into a Trump-parody seemed like a funny thing to do at the time.

But as Season 20 progressed and the unthinkable became horribly thinkable, they did try to persuade viewers to vote for Hillary. They even had "Giant Douche" look right into the camera and beg people to vote for Hillary Clinton. Note: not vote for "Ms. Turd Sandwich." Vote. For. Hillary. Clinton. By her own real name, not the parody BSAB name they had given her up until then.

The episode after the election was originally titled "The Very First Gentleman" and was going to be about Bill Clinton and his new role as, well, the very first First Gentleman of the USA. But then the election happened, and they replaced it with "Oh, Jeeeez!" which I think conveys Matt & Trey's own feelings. They know they helped this happen starting way back with the original "Douche & Turd" episode and their overall centrist / libertarian perspective in the series, and now they're paying the price. Think about it ― well, the comment I just posted in TFA is appropriate here:
The way I see it, they simply have to pretend that Seasons 19 & 20 never happened. Otherwise, they lose their best adult character, Mister Garrison, since he's now Giant Douche, 45ᵗʰ President of the United States, and I don't see how they can avoid politics and still keep him active in the series.

The only other adult character who even comes close to Garrison (who's still alive, anyway, and whose voice actor isn't dead [we still miss you, Isaac "Chef" Hayes!]) is Randy Marsh. They tried with Gerald "SkankHunt42" Brovlofski this past season, but it just didn't "take" as well. And really, who else can take Garrison's place? Mr. Mackey? Jimbo? Mister Slave?

There was a way they could've ended Season Twenty that would've made this work and not feel like a cop-out, but they didn't.

Note that there's not actually much if any new footage in the trailer. It's all snippets from past seasons remixed together.

South Park's humor is different than it used to be. But it's not comparatively "bad" like the last 15+ seasons of The Simpsons relative to before.

They don't have to follow up on the last 2 seasons, but they might want to keep a couple continuity things:

1) Mr. Garrison as President. But only use him sparingly, because the Trump well has been tapped at this point. Otherwise, just keep him out of storylines.

2) PC Principal. There's still a lot of good comedic material in the social justice arm of the Internet and I enjoy seeing his comeuppance even if they normalized him last year.

Well, politics aside, Trump's vacation time could be used as "Garrison time."

A better idea, IMO? I believe they could  go full Fight Club. Garrison finally coming full circle with Mr. Hat/Mr. Twig and having a full-on alter-ego , which is Mr. President. Hell, they could have him argue with himself like TwoFace.

/The best description of south park I've ever heard is radical centrists.

That's pretty much what's come to turn me off from the show. Matt and Trey embody what is worst in Generation X. Too much apathy and too much cynicism. Picking a side, making a stance, fighting for something your passionate about, trying to actually do something to make the world a better place? What are you, a sucker? That's for chumps. Sitting in the middle and making fun of the "try hards" is what all the cool kids aging Gen Xers do.

I get where that comes from, our generation is wedged in between two juggernaut generations and they both out class us in terms of influence and sheer numbers, but spretending that giving up is actually being "too cool to play the game" is just a bunch of slacker bullshiat. They've basically taken not giving a shiat about anything and found a way to be obnoxiously preachy about it. They're like those coonts that call themselves agnostics without knowing what the word even means but they think is automatically makes them better than "both sides".

And then there's their "saying George W. Bush is smart is the very core of Punk rock" crap. Being a mindless contrarian who says the sky is pink when everyone else says it's blue isn't being edgy or punk rock. It's being a mindless contrarian. Punk rock wasn't about being a mindless contrarian. It was about picking up your instrument, even if you don't know more than 3 chords and can't tune it and using it to belt out what exactly it is you believe in regardless of whether that belief is popular or not. It was about making an argument not just being contradictory.

Garrison's lost to them unless they somehow negate Seasons 19 & 20, and that'd mean getting rid of P.C. Principal as well. They've said that they're going to ignore politics for the most part, and I don't see how they can if they keep him as President Giant Douche.

Here's a clip from "The Very First Gentleman" that had to be altered to make it into "Oh, Jeeeez!". Listen carefully to what P.C. Principal says starting at 0:09:

I wish I could find the one immediately after that where First Gentleman Bill Clinton addresses the South Park Elementary School assembly. He also talks about his wife having won.

Ghastly: Picking a side, making a stance, fighting for something your passionate about, trying to actually do something to make the world a better place? What are you, a sucker?

The f*ck are you on about?

Have you NEVER seen South Park?

For every "Giant Douche/Turd Sandwich" episode, there are ten "you get f*cked if you treat people like crap, show no remorse or sympathy, or are oblivious to everyone else" episodes. Yes, Cartman doesn't get struck by lightning every time he does something wrong... but neither does anyone else in this world.

South Park seems to get a lot of grief because they don't placate causes which cheer every time they remove sand grains from a mountain. Or because people saw an article or an episode 5-15 years ago that they didn't like.

Imagine if Stanley's Cup were the barometer for the show.

2017-09-03 12:27:57 AM
They don't have to ignore the last two seasons to keep Garrison without getting into politics. He could simply resign or get impeached. Nobody is forcing them to follow current events literally, the show is still fiction.
