the issue has been used by Republicans and allied groups to confuse voters.

On the one hand this is evil shiat. On the other it doesn't seem to take much to confuse voters these days.

Stories like this make me wonder how much influence Russia has over today's GOP.

I bet Putin would LOVE to see the U.S. fark itself over in this way.

At least until the ensuing global fiscal collapse reached his own country a month or two later.

The debt ceiling is an economic WMD. Nobody should be trusted with such dangerous weapons.

"But you can't just keep spending! We spend far too much on helping poor people! We need to spend within our means!"

Which is what everyone on the right says, demonstrating they have no idea what the actual issue is.  You already bought it, dickhead, now pay for it. It's ordering your dinner and then telling the waitress you need to spend less and then sprinting for the door when she brings the check.

The debt ceiling is the stupidest thing ever that's debated simply to score political points

Or we could, you know; balance the farking budget.

Cut unnecessary military spending and tax wealth, starting with a reasonable inheritance tax.

Right and also let's not forget that you are supposed to treat government budgets like a household budget as well. You know congress should sit around the breakfast table and talk about belt tightening.

This crap needs to end. I'm sick of the GOP holding us hostage.

Burn it all down, Republicans.

If you can't win when you've already won, well...
I guess it wasn't worth winning in the first place, right?

Remember, for the mega-rich, turning the United States into a third-world country actually HELPS them.

When you own everything, it's too your benefit to have a population that is beholden to you for survival. Yeah, it doesn't work out too well in the long-term (the peasants/slaves tend to rebel), but you can sustain it for your lifetime. Especially if you are already old. And conservatives don't think about the future, ever.

NEVER FORGET that conservatives, and the Christian conservatives in particular, want a return to feudalism. They WANT us all to be peasants.

Reagan raised the debt ceiling 18 times during his Administration. I fail to see the problem.

Tell me. When rates are below inflation, in what world is it a good idea NOT to deficit spend?

When you already spent that money 30 years ago?

As long as the money you borrow yours into durable goods, like education, health, infrastructure, that money will multiply.
If you borrow so that the ultra rich can replace their small yacht every 3 years instead of every 5, that money is gone.

I don't disagree in principle, but the third wheels of the budget make this essentially impossible. So-called fiscal conservatives care more about draconian discretionary spending cuts than an actual balanced budget. Plus, even with a long-term balanced budget, there are strong economic arguments for deficit spending during recessions. That kind of nuance is also lost on "fiscal conservatives."

Right. 'Fiscal conservatives' don't really care about a balanced budget -- witness their outsize spending on military programs the military doesn't even want or raising taxes on the absurdly rich. So-called fiscal conservatives want to destroy social programs and safety nets. They'd be satisfied with tearing away Medicare down to Social Security, inclusive.

Really?  You think that's all that would satisfy them?  Ryan's fondest dream is to eliminate Medicare and Social Security (think back to Bush the Lesser floating the idea of letting people keep their S.S. payments and investing it themselves -- right before we got hit between the eyes with the Recession).  Remember, before Obama became the author of all the GOP's ills, the right had to undo EVERYTHING that FDR did.  I'm sure if they could find a way to get sledgehammers into the hands of their followers, they'd be happy to send them maps to all of the WPA projects still standing with instructions to do their worst.
