In other news, Trump experienced the Moon landing. After all, he's talked with someone who was on the Moon decades ago. Later, Trump will attempt to claim ownership.

I hope my judgement on this isn't a sign of a deteriorating ability to process disgust. The beginning of a precipitous slide to the place where I accept that "stupid" is the new normal. Eh, here goes... I don't think this is terrible, in fact, there's a fairly rational explanation for his use of "first-hand" He spoke with some people who had experienced the storm and saw the effect that it had on those people "first-hand".

Maybe it's creeping apathy, maybe it's just that all the evidence I've seen shows me the man is an idiot, Given that, it would be unreasonable for me to expect him to have a functional, adult-level vocabulary. It's too predictable to cause outrage.

The people he spoke to had witness it first hand. By definition he then had a second hand account. That's not what he claimed though.

This obstinate resistance to objective fact at any and all levels is a deliberate strategy by this administration. Don't let them off the hook for it, even if it seems relatively minor. This is precisely an attempt to wear everyone down so they can engage in naked corruption with only ineffective, dispirited resistance. It's straight out of the fascist playbook that Putin used to turn Russia into a corrupt maze of murder and graft, seizing the reins of power and thwarting true democratic rule.

That is also not a coincidence. Yes, they are trying to normalize double-speak. Do not fall in to the trap.

She's right, you know. Trump never claimed to have zeroth-hand knowledge, of, you know, actually being there, he had first-hand knowledge. First: one removed from the origin. One is not equal to zero, and everyone knows zero is the center, right in the middle of the action. QED

No. This is what he said. "After witnessing first hand the horror & devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey." He saw 0 devastation. He talked to people who had witnessed devastation firsthand. That is by definition, secondhand. What he said is a straight up lie.

The argument was that the "horror and devastation" "caused by Hurricane Harvey" he was referring to wasn't the flooded homes and streets, that he didn't witness first-hand. The "horror and devastation" "caused by Hurricane Harvey" that he did witness first-hand was that which had been wrought upon the people he talked to.

It's a functional explanation for the statement, meant to be no more than an amusing exercise. You and I both know that's not what he was talking about. Either he wanted to make it seem like he went down there and surveyed the physical damage caused by the storm or he doesn't know what "first-hand" actually means. I'm still about fifty-fifty on which of those it true.

I literally cannot imagine doing that job. I mean, I tried to come up with a spin for this as an experiment when he tweeted that and I just...couldn't. The best I could do was something along the lines of "the President flew over Houston and other areas that were devastated by Harvey and was briefed on the extensive damage, loss of life, property, and ongoing difficulties the area is experiencing. It was his judgement, after coordinating with locals working on the ground on relief, rescue, and recovery efforts, that as much as he wanted to be among the fine citizens of Texas who are dealing with this disaster, that his presence would impede those efforts. But everything he saw from Air Force One moved him deeply. He is calling on Congress to return to their jobs as soon as possible and pass an aid bill to start the process of rebuilding started immediately."

I mean I guess that would work, but I would be in the bathroom puking my guts out for days afterwards.

Don't know how she does it.

It's so hard to wrap your brain about that if you are a decent person though. I usually can *understand* people I disagree with, but I seriously have no way to even feel like I'm in the same universe with these...creatures, much less in the same room as them. It's so jarring.

Tucker Carlson's 2005 MSNBC show had a segment where Max Kellerman would take the opposite side of any argument.  Max was amazing, but I don't think he could handle this challenge for long.  (That show had several wonderful parts, none of which was the host.)

I've taken it a step further: there are people in my immediate circle (family, friends and associates alike) who voted for and continue to support this abortion of a President, who I've simply stopped speaking to. I'm not usually that absolutist, but... I just can't.

I can sooooooooomewhat see, in an emotional moment in November 2016, hitting the button for Trump in reaction to a horrific dislike of HER, but to continue to support what this has turned into?

I was listening to a FDNY firefighter tell this amazing story about being in the north tower as the south tower collapsed on 9/11. It was an amazing story, he got down 43 floors and out of the building 3 minutes before it too came down.

At the time I was just in awe listening to an incredible story, now I'm excited to be able to say that I was a 9/11 first responder.
