I can't think of any reason it should be illegal, or even why I should care. Trump does 10 despicable things a day... this is so minor it barely even registers, and anyone dumb enough to buy one is doing us a favor by identifying themselves in public.

President Donald Trump filed for re-election just five hours after he was sworn in

Those campaign funds can be used to pay his defense attorneys.

I'd be wary of being cheap knockoff Walmart Trump hats. I doubt they possess the fine craftsmanship of a genuine Official USA 45th Presidential Hat™. Proudly made in the USA ⁽ᵒʳ ᶜʰᶦᶰᵃ⁾.

FTFA: While not illegal, a watchdog group reportedly called it "inappropriate" for Trump to don for-sale campaign items while appearing at public outings in his capacity as commander-in-chief.

1.  Until it is a President's, or any other political person for that matter, final term, they're always campaigning.  Not thinking about the next election and how people will perceive you in 4 years time is stupid for a public official.

2.  Do we expect him to wear Bernie Sanders, Jeb Bush, or Ralph Nader hats?

3.  USA, 45, and the American flag are a lot different than Trump 2022.  A hat with the country you serve, the order of Presidency, and the flag of the country served, to me, is appropriate for any President to wear.

I'm as big of a Trump hater as the next Trump hating person, but I don't see the outrage here.  Even more so if they are American made and the increased prices go towards American workers being paid more.  From a patriotic standpoint, I'd rather buy "the more expensive American-made, American-supporting goods" than "the cheaper Chinese-made, American-supporting goods"....from a company known for paying so little the bulk of the employees rely on government welfare to make ends meet when the owners are some of the wealthiest of the 1%.

Not really.  These laws are pretty easy to understand.  Directly from the FTC:

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT MADE IN USA CLAIMS

Must U.S. content be disclosed on products sold in the U.S.?

U.S. content must be disclosed on automobiles and textile, wool, and fur products. There's no law that requires most other products sold in the U.S. to be marked or labeled Made in USA or have any other disclosure about their amount of U.S. content. However, manufacturers and marketers who choose to make claims about the amount of U.S. content in their products must comply with the FTC's Made in USA policy.

What products does the FTC's Made in USA policy apply to?

The policy applies to all products advertised or sold in the U.S., except for those specifically subject to country-of-origin labeling by other laws. Other countries may have their own country-of-origin marking requirements. As a result, exporters should determine whether the country to which they are exporting imposes such requirements.

What kinds of claims does the Enforcement Policy Statement apply to?

The Enforcement Policy Statement applies to U.S. origin claims that appear on products and labeling, advertising, and other promotional materials. It also applies to all other forms of marketing, including marketing through digital or electronic mechanisms, such as Internet or e-mail.

THE STANDARD FOR UNQUALIFIED MADE IN USA CLAIMS

What is the standard for a product to be called Made in USA without qualification?

For a product to be called Made in USA, or claimed to be of domestic origin without qualifications or limits on the claim, the product must be "all or virtually all" made in the U.S. The term "United States," as referred to in the Enforcement Policy Statement, includes the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. territories and possessions.

What does "all or virtually all" mean?

"All or virtually all" means that all significant parts and processing that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. That is, the product should contain no - or negligible - foreign content.

What substantiation is required for a Made in USA claim?

When a manufacturer or marketer makes an unqualified claim that a product is Made in USA, it should have - and rely on - a "reasonable basis" to support the claim at the time it is made. This means a manufacturer or marketer needs competent and reliable evidence to back up the claim that its product is "all or virtually all" made in the U.S.

What factors does the Commission consider to determine whether a product is "all or virtually all" made in the U.S.?

The product's final assembly or processing must take place in the U.S. The Commission then considers other factors, including how much of the product's total manufacturing costs can be assigned to U.S. parts and processing, and how far removed any foreign content is from the finished product. In some instances, only a small portion of the total manufacturing costs are attributable to foreign processing, but that processing represents a significant amount of the product's overall processing. The same could be true for some foreign parts. In these cases, the foreign content (processing or parts) is more than negligible, and, as a result, unqualified claims are inappropriate.

There was a recent thread involving imports and "Honda motorcycles".  Oddly enough, thanks to the amount of "import content", only Honda Goldwings (and not any Harleys) have been "made in USA" for a very long time (although I think the Goldwings lost their certification a ways back).
