Why does the GOP fail so hard?

Because they do not have the interest of the non wealthy classes. Yeah, even you Mr "I make $250k a year and have so much in stocks, bonds and have paid off my house because I'm better at finances than everyone else around me so you shouldn't have to have a hand up because I didn't get one at any point in my life". They don't care about you. You are too poor.

2017-08-30 10:33:29 PM
Because they're dicks and most have had a life of privilege if not at least relative comfort and DGAF

2017-08-30 10:36:21 PM
They're only comfortable with the misery they inflict on others, at no cost to themselves.

Competition's bad for business.

2017-08-30 10:38:34 PM
Honestly, people really dont know what it's like to live hard.  Hell, I don't know what it's like, really, and I left home at 16.  It's so easy to mumble to a homeless person "no money" while jamming to the comfort of your car outside 7-11.  Hell I do it everyday, damn 7-11 is sort of beacon for the homeless.  I think bc the employees are illegal and they don't want to call the police.  I even pulled a NIMBY and said to the owner "i don't pay taxes to deal with this shiat!"  It sucks, all around

2017-08-30 10:56:28 PM
 Because they're selfish evil bastards.

2017-08-30 11:52:50 PM
A combination of lack of empathy and imagination.

If they're not personally getting rained on, then they can't see how flooding could possibly be a problem for anyone else.

2017-08-30 11:57:01 PM
Probably because their entire party has been a disaster for the past 30 years

2017-08-31 12:00:24 AM
Some have been good at it.

Objectively, I think it depends on being able to empathize with human behavior under stress with limited choices.

Like its easy to say, "hey, everyone evacuate!" But if your mental image is jumping in your Hummer and all the necessities and off ya go 300 miles to a Holiday Inn...you do not think about the guy with no car.  Or a junker with poor tires, low on oil with a leaky radiator and no cash until Friday/payday.  Or what a single mom or an elderly or handicapped lady does.

Or how to cope if you need a refill of your blood pressure meds but insurance says you have enough sitting at home under water.

If you are used to being well enough off you can't actually know these issues exist, you can care deeply and still get it wrong.

Don't forget the NOLA city govt was Democratic.  So was the governor, IIRC.  They were kinda useless in Katrina too.  They meant well...feebly.

Shut up! They're doing the Lord's work.

2017-08-31 12:11:08 AM
It's because it involves an expenditure of public money solely for the public good, with no expectation of any return on investment.

They just can't fathom spending money that doesn't profit somebody.

'f*ck you I got mine' is not a helpful attitude when trying to recover from a city rending disaster.

Huston GOP: 'hey, we need federal help!'
Trump: 'f*ck you, I got mine!'
Huston: 'uh, guys?  we REALLY need some help here!'
Trump: 'did you see the size of the crowd!?  damn i'm awesome!'
Huston: 'no, really - this chemical plant might blow up soon!'
Trump: 'I can't hear you over the sound of my latest campaign rally, which was HUGE by the way.   really huge!  best rally ever!'
Huston: 'f*ck it, we're joining the democrats.'

Aid from the Feds is welfare and socialism. Texas should reject every dime.

2017-08-31 12:15:05 AM
Because they are either super rich assoholes, or poor assholes, but assholes.

2017-08-31 12:16:19 AM
When you dogmatically hold that no competent government can exist, and you refuse to fund the government as a result, you get an incompetent government that can't help.

Reagan's "10 most frightening words" philosophy has done immeasurable harm.

I hope you're right, but face it, the people that can go back to Houston are the people that will vote Trump. Any liberals or minorities will be kept out just long enough to be in limbo voting wise.

2017-08-31 12:18:23 AM
why is this even an article in the first place?  the GOP has made it ABUNDANTLY clear that 'f*ck you I got mine' is their only core 'value'.  people who elevate greed to a religion aren't going to be thrilled to pay for a clean up of other people's cities and not make any money out of it for themselves.

adamgreeney: I hope you're right, but face it, the people that can go back to Houston are the people that will vote Trump.

And if they do that - then f*ck 'em.  let Huston rot.  if they continue to vote to take away disaster aid for others and demonstrate a clear pattern of greed then cut 'em off, let 'em rebuild on their own dime.

a disdain for government assistance so instinctive that it's only mitigated when the need hits close to home.

Federal disaster aid means the government is doing something to help people that the private sector will never be able to handle. That the feds can do good in the world is anathema to Republican thinking and runs counter to their narrative of bumbling incompetence and waste that allows them to attack government programs at every turn.

2017-08-31 12:37:11 AM
Because they believe the federal government is useless and run it accordingly.

They want police to keep the plebes in line and a strong military to secure markets and resources overseas. Everything else is extraneous and oppresses rich people by making them pay for things they don't want.

I'll take this one. Because it incentivizes bad decisions and promotes moral hazard.

but don't you DARE call them out on it, or suddenly you become the bad guy.

for a political party that claims to love them some jebus, they sure do work hard to pervert the values of the religion they claim to follow.

It's been said here already but i'll say it again. No Empathy.

It's why they're always against all the icky bad libby things in the world right up untill it happens to them or their family members and then they're suddenly all for it.

what's amazing is watching huston republican voters act shocked that their GOP led government is not exactly enthusiastic about helping them repair the damage to their city.

I've been living out of my car for the last 8 months.  A week ago I was stopped at a red light and someone hit me at 30 plus miles an hour.  Lucky for me we both have the same insurance company and after a day or two i got a rental car.
That being said, if i had to drive hundreds of miles i could do it.  If i hadn't had my car totaled i couldn't have... as it was i was able to drive it 3 miles until my car died.  It's still dead.  With most of my belongings trapped in the trunk.
Lucky for me i live in Colorado where hurricanes don't exist. If I lived anywhere else I'd be farked.

2017-08-31 04:20:48 AM
Oh, I'm sure they're hard at work on relief...for the big businesses who were affected, and might see a drop in profits. Maybe even on legislation legalizing price gouging during disasters.

The mayor (I think) had to promise undocumented people that they wouldn't be deported for seeking aid at shelters. It is both sad and infuriating that something like that has to be said out loud!

No: Tyrannical gubbmint überreach whargarbl

Solid Muldoon: Because they are PURE EVIl!

Nah, it's more complicated than that. Their entire philosophy is centered about Rugged Individualism; There is no problem that can't be addressed with a little elbow grease and a pickup truck. Any events that contradicts that, be it institutionalized racism, environmental degradation, or basic economic reality, is a fabrication of the Big Government Nanny State what wants to take away yer Freedoms.

Not all Republicans are pure evil, but they certainly do make it convenient to be evil.

Now now, they don't want to kill off the human race. Then how would the Job Creators make more money? Who would they have power over?

No, they want to ENSLAVE the human race.
