I actually enjoy Trevor Noah's show very much - I just hear nonspecific complaints a lot about how he's not as good as John Stewart, because reasons, and was mocking that position.

I also liked the Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, but I guess I was the only one.

No, I really liked The Nightly Show. I thought that they were finding their rhythm when it got pulled unfortunately. It was a nice counterpoint for The Daily Show. But I think a lot of folks got uncomfortable when they realized that they didn't get some bits, and then they realized that they in fact resembled others, and that was even MOAR uncomfortable. And that was sad making...

Yeah, except for that "a guy who isn't a raging asshole" part. Trump is an awful long ways away from not being a raging asshole.

Pretty much as far as someone can get, I'd say.

Well, yeah, clearly, but this is about Trump's perception of himself.  He doesn't think he's racist.  I'm pretty sure he doesn't think he's a raging asshole, either.  Yet clearly, demonstrably, he's both.

I liked the nightly show but I found it had a hard time keeping a format and as much as their round table segments could be really interesting he didn't have enough time to have 3-4 people on at once.  It would have worked much better I think with a using the same model of a show like Real Time.

Racists rarely think that they're racist. My mom doesn't think she's a racist - she's just aware of the facts, and it's a fact that those people are just inferior. She's not mean about it, no more than she is with retards. They can't help it, so there's no sense being mean to them about it.

And, yes, that's pretty much how she thinks. It's farking repugnant, because she thinks she's "gracious" - y'know, going out of her way to be nice to them, not holding their obvious inadequacies against them, that sort of thing. She won't talk about it unless you give her what I gather would be "the racist nod" - approval of or commiseration with such thinking - at which point she's quite happy to discuss these facts with you, because most folks just don't seem to understand.

Her unthinking, ignorant bigotry isn't seen as taking an odious position against them, but as a slightly patronizing position supporting them.

Got into it with a trumper. He said Obama was much more racist than Trump. I asked for examples and he pulled out rev Wright and his preaching of hate towards white people from the pulpit. I dropped it after that as a hopeless cause because if your guilty by association then I don't see how there is any comparison... you don't even need guilt by association. Trump entered into politics pushing birtherism among many other examples.

More than two even by the time you posted. Add another Wilmore fan who very much misses The Nightly Show. I even wonder if its cancellation enhanced Trump's chances of victory. He had a way of cutting through the B.S. I agree that the panels were usually lame, but sometimes pretty good. They were not all awful. I remember some surprising me and informing me of things I hadn't realized before.

Comparing John Oliver or to a lesser extent Samantha Bee to Trevor Noah is an unfair comparison. Oliver and Bee do one show a week and that gives them time to really get into depth on a subject. Oliver also has the advantage of not being on basic cable and thus not as dependent on not pissing off advertisers as well as the more obvious lack of censorship angle. Plus he has access to a portion of HBO's pocketbook which allows for many of the awesome stunts he's pulled.

Barring the occasional hiatus, Trevor's team has at most three days to prepare a Monday episode, and one day each for Tuesday − Thursday.

And let's not forget that John has a lot to answer for re: Trump running:

Got to meet him and work his two shows at the venue I'm at last Saturday. I'm a live audio engineer and have been at the 2500 seat theater for over twenty years and have done everybody from Carlin and Seinfeld to the new guys out there. He was a very nice guy, and while he did his Trump stuff his non political stuff was VERY funny and clever.
He does a bunch of stuff about American vernaculars that were confusing to him that was exceptionally funny.
