Well of course Congress will do it for Texas.  That is a lot of districts the GOP would lose if they didn't.

I'm sure somehow they'll manage to mangle it or put all the monies into the hands of people who already have it.

Louisiana was a blood-red state by GW Bush's time too.

The real difference is that Houston is a much whiter city than New Orleans, still marginally (50.5% in 2010) majority white, and with a black population in relative decline (23.7% in 2010 versus 28.1% in 1990).

The GOP's attitude in 2005 was "Those People don't vote for us anyway, let them farking drown."

Now? They see people who look like Redcaps neck-deep in water and come running. They need every white vote they can get to save their scrawny necks in 2018.

I saw Ted "The Smarmy One" Cruz on TV this morning, begging for government money for Texas.  The same dick-bag that said Sandy victims could go suck an egg.  I'm not saying that Texas shouldn'tget help, just pointing out that Ted's a hypocritical cocksucker.

And just think, the Harvey relief bill won't have to be ladled with pork projects for other unaffected red states simply to buy their votes.

The GOP rules!

Texas should not get a handout.  They should get a loan to rebuild.  And they should pay that loan back by taxing businesses that benefit from the remedy provided by that loan.  There's no reason at all why someone in a county that did not get Sandy Aide should be paying Harvey Aide.

Texas has shiatloads of rich people in it and 38 electoral college votes, plus lots of Republican voters. fark yeah they're gonna shell out our money for Texas disasters. And, of course, there's the fact that there are tons of pale-complected people in Texas (as opposed to New Orleans).

I sincerely hope this is not surprising to anyone.

I don't think this is a that much of a racial decision.  This is a "the last president farked up Katrina and suffered politically for it.  Our current president is already a fark up.  We need to help him look good" decision.

To be fair, they did eventually do it for Sandy, as well, despite the GOP's protestations.

I'm not going to complain because Congress does something right for a change. Yes, it sucks that we have to basically flog them into doing so, and yes, it sucks that they're doing it because they're partisan assholes who would much rather send money to Texas than help more than two dozen other states, but I'll be damned if I say that our government shouldn't help Americans in Texas, just out of spite, because it tried to weasel out of helping Americans in other states.

Fark that.

We start playing favorites, and it only becomes partisan ammo for even more polarization. Yes, Texas Congressmembers were assholes during Sandy - that doesn't mean that we're justified in being assholes to Texas. Even if Texans don't take it to heart, they need to see that we're all Americans, and we farking help each other in need.

Perhaps the prosperity gospel goblins in Texas will learn what "turn the other cheek" and "love thy neighbor" actually mean.

Some of it is, some of it is bots spreading it around.  The Republicans and their supporters are doing everything they can to make people believe that Katrina happened sometime between 2008 - 2016.

Maybe. More probably, they'll thank God and President Trump for their own bailout, and begrudge every cent that goes to the insufficiently pious victims of the next natural disaster, convinced it merely rewards impiety and fecklessness.

World, once again I apologize for my ignorant fellow Houstonians and Texans who vote for evil people that deny help to others. They shame us and I will keep actively working for their swift exit out of office.

And thank y'all farkers for the good wishes and humor over the last couple of days. Dollars aren't going to be the only thing that helps us through this. At least one of those people (Sheila) argued when corrected.  She felt the significant element was not that Obama wasn't president, but rather that he was golfing at the time (which also does not appear to be true).

I would push for just a few strings:

1) Texas has to get a real building code like Florida

2) Rebuilt critical infrastructure (esp hospitals) need to be higher with the generators on the roof, and/or water-proof 1st floor.

3) New flood management plan

/You've been hit by eight 100 year floods in two decades.  Something has changed and you probably should change with it.
