Good. Go Lambda Legal et al.

I hope it will do something.  The military has its own, separate, justice department.  But I remember this being how prop 8 in CA was overturned.  Homosexuals gained the right to marry, and once that right was attained, it couldn't be taken away by popular vote.

Transsexuals obtained the right to serve openly, you can't just yank the rug out from under them.  It might not reverse the ban for new recruits, but at the very least the service members currently serving shouldn't be drummed out.  Also it's just a matter of time before Trump starts going after openly serving homosexuals as well. He's nibbling at the margins now, but it won't end with a trans ban, I guarantee.

Three lawsuits filed so far.

Yup. This is clearly the stupidest petty thing the Trump administration has pulled off, probably because they can't make any other real policy happen.

Don't forget this ban does 2 things:

1) frees up money in the budget to build his precious wall
2) appeal to his base by STIGGINIT to a liberal minority

He's throwing Pence and his alt-religious nutters a bone here, I don't think Trump cares one bit either way about trans people serving in the military. The military commanders don't seem all that interested in the ban either, and the money excuse is weak, when you look at it v. the military medical budget. The only one with a history of getting that icky feeling around gay or trans people or women is Pence.

If there's one thing Trump won't do, it's talk about litigation, threaten litigation, or lie about litigation.

Okay. If there's three things Trump won't do...

Same way he has so much support from the country as a whole.  Most Republicans just see the R and that's enough.

I will say, however, even the R servicemen are getting tired of the annual government shutdowns and continuing resolutions.

The amount of money will build what about a 1 ft. section of the wall? At the high end the estimate is less than $9 Million or 1/10th the amount spent on ED drugs by the military. The court cost to defend this ban may well exceed the "cost savings". It also fails to take into account the cost to recruit and train replacements. If more than IIRC two of the people who leave are pilots it will cost more in training cost to replace them (these are old numbers that may be way too low) (not the most reliable source)

Good. Anyone who wants to fight for their country deserves the right to do so. These people are willing to put their life on the line for us so the least we can do is support them back. And it does seem like the majority of people do.

Support from the grunts. I doubt his support is as high with officers who are college educated.
It's hard to believe that we are denying enlistment to transgender. If you want free reassignment surgery after putting up with the hell that is the US military, you can have it. I'm too old, fat and chickenshiat to sign up.

I'm against this ban but the Equal Protection clause justification is a turkey.

Serving in the military is not a right, it's a privilege.  But I suspect the military brass doesn't want this ban and may deliberately mount a half-hearted defense.

Also, are trans service members expected to meet the physical requirements of the opposite sex?  Seems more of a problem for ftm trans people.

I know two active duty servicemen and they don't like him at all. They voted Gary Johnson and are worried he is going to get them killed in a war that doesn't need to happen. They tell me that they aren't alone in not liking the Commander in Chief and I believe I read that more active duty servicemen and women voted for Johnson than Trump.

As if the transgender ban has anything to do with any real policy concern.

What it did was get the base excited by "sticking it to the libs".

The media then goes crazy, which makes the base hate the media even more.

Its win-win-win for Trump and deplorables.

And that is literally all that matters.

Actual policy is irrelevant.

Ambivalence: I hope it will do something.  The military has its own, separate, justice department.  But I remember this being how prop 8 in CA was overturned.  Homosexuals gained the right to marry, and once that right was attained, it couldn't be taken away by popular vote.

The problem is that while it can't be taken away by popular vote, there are those on the right that want to revisit it by challenging the validity of Obergefell and see the decision overturned by the present SCOTUS.  With the present conservative justices being heavily against the decision, it's quite possible that if a serious challenge is made, Obergefell could go away as quickly as it was made law.

The right sees this as being no different than when they pushed DADT.  I think they're hoping that if they prevail with this, they may be able to bring back DADT through new legislation.

Yeah but what percent of the military made up the 3.2 percent who voted for Johnson nationwide?

I can't imagine it's a majority in any case. And the highest percentages he got were in states that don't really scream "military" (ND and NM)

The military has looked into transsexuals serving. For a nation who went from integrated to segregated to and fro, I would trust the military when it finally decides to accept people. It's nutcases like Trump that shiat up and down on patriots who take up a watch.

We're not the Roman empire reeling towards the inevitable downfall. We're a country built on ideals not on ideal physical traits. There was another country like that but it didn't last too long.

As a cis-gendered hetero white (passable-for-Christian) male, I'm not the target of most of Trump's bungletardery so far. Still, I'm grateful that there are people and groups like Lambda and the ACLU fighting the good fight like this. It's a small comfort, maybe,  but in dark times like these I'll gladly take it.
