Bad idea then, bad idea now.  We need more Andy Taylors, and fewer Audie Murphys.

I will occasionally watch random old TV on MeTV.

The last time I watched the Andy Griffith show, I was taken aback. Two people held the Sheriff at gunpoint during that episode, and nobody died. Try that today.

Oh, and he didn't arrest anybody, because that's just how people communicated in those days, I guess.

The weird part of the Andy Griffith show is that Andy was a lifelong Democrat, who regretted not putting more black people in roles. He was caught behind the truth that the southern white characters wouldn't realistically use a black doctor or a lawyer nor did any black actor want to be cast as servants. Nor did he think that a comedy show could have Andy solve a complicated story of racism in a half hour.

Sure there were black extras in Mayberry, and a black coach in a later season (And the spin off actually had more black roles) But most folks of south, both black and white were just happy to see their culture on the screen.

When Obama banned certain military weapons for police use, it was just politics. He only banned certain items that very few police departments had any desire for, like tracked vehicles and vehicle mounted weapons. His order had little practical impact on which military items were going to police. They were still getting rifles, MRAPs and Humvees.

Trump's rescission of this order is also for political show. Very few of those previously banned items will go to police agencies anyhow.

In fact, many police agencies are now trying to get rid of their MRAPs and other military equipment because the cost of storage and maintenance is so high and they get so little use.

Providing police with military equipment reduces both civilian complaints and assaults on officers without any increase in the killing of suspects.

So when the blueshirts become trump's brownshirts they will be better armed against the greenshirts.

I don't believe this but it is how his sick mind works.

I liked it better when it was Bruce Willis:

General William Devereaux: The Army is a broadsword, not a scalpel. Trust me, senator, you do not want the Army in an American city.

Chief of Staff: But hypothetically... how long would it take you to deploy?

General William Devereaux: You know we can't go in until the President invokes the War Powers Act.

Chief of Staff: I understand that, General. Let's assume, for a moment, that the order has been given.

General William Devereaux: Twelve hours after the President gives the order we can be on the ground. One light infantry division of 10,700 men, elements of the Rapid Deployment Force, Special Forces, Delta, APCs, helicopters, tanks, and of course the ubiquitous M16A1 assault rifle. A humble enough weapon until you see it in the hands of a man outside your local bowling alley or 7-11. It will be noisy. It will be scary, and it will not be mistaken for a VFW parade.

Army General: I wanna remind you, General Devereaux does not speak for official Army policy. A police function has become accepted as our role in Haiti and Somalia.

General William Devereaux: Make no mistake. We will hunt down the enemy. We will find the enemy. And we will kill the enemy. No card-carrying member of the ACLU is more deadset against it than I am. Which is why I urge you - I *implore* you - do not consider this as an option.

Trump has a hard-on for law enforcement and the military. If the military won't give him his parade, a police force filled with white supremacists dressed in full military regalia will do just fine.
Trust me, you will soon see a local police force marching in front of Trump with their military toys.

let's assume you are 100% correct with this post. why aren't police everywhere going on record that they all ready have all the military stuff they need and WHAT THE fark WAS TRUMP THINKING WITH GRENADE LAUNCHERS !! sessions is an even tinier dicked version of trump so he probably thought this up. but seriously any department that doesn't publicly elect to not get grenade launchers AND to openly refute their use is just waving the jackbooted thug flag for all to see.

The cops get grenade launchers, but do they get actual anti-personnel grenades? I've never heard of any being used by civilian police forces, just grenade-launcher-compatible flares and teargas type rounds, which should not be a problem since cops already have such munitions in other forms.

I think most Americans are just numb to the fact that their country has a huge amount of cops and that they are militarized to a disturbing degree. Whenever I go back to the States the sheer number of police cruisers I see is unnerving. And it doesn't matter which part of the country I'm in, or how large of a population center it may or may not be.

They're doing this to silent dissent. You don't like the way things are going? Too bad, deal with it. You try to cry out and protest? Looks like a riot to me, time to bring out the big toys and put you in your place.

Anthony 'Hub' Hubbard:
Come on General, you've lost men, I've lost men, but you - you, you *can't* do this! What, what if they don't even want the sheik, have you considered that? What if what they really want is for us to herd our children into stadiums like we're doing? And put soldiers on the street and have Americans looking over their shoulders? Bend the law, shred the Constitution just a little bit? Because if we torture him, General, we do that and everything we have fought, and bled, and died for is over. And they've won. They've already won!
