FTA: Trump's pardon, issued without consulting the Justice Department...

Of course.

His effort to see if the case could be dropped showed a troubling disregard for the traditional wall between the White House and the Justice Department, and taken together with similar actions could undermine respect for the rule of law, experts said.

It's just another example of Trump being Trump. He thinks it's a great thing to do, and he's President, so he's gonna do it.

He could just issue a blanket pardon to everyone in his campaign for any and all crimes they committed during the campaign.

Trump's pardon, issued without consulting the Justice Department, raised a storm of protest over the weekend, including from some fellow Republicans, and threatens to become a stain on the president's legacy.

Which begs the question, can a pile of shiat be stained?

The electoral college was supposed to prevent someone like Trump from taking office.

Not a law, more of a tradition. Like the Senate being the deliberative body and the House being representative of the people.

This is how Trumpy rewards loyalty. While it's within the letter of the law, it's not the spirit of the law. Handing out pardons as political favors is something an autocrat does.

No, it wasn't. When the electoral college was instituted the electors weren't chosen by popular vote. So the current system is a half-assed monstrosity that NOBODY intended to do ANYTHING.

The persistent claim that a farked up mess must necessarily have a higher purpose when it's clear it doesn't is like creationism only dumber. Shiat is shiat because nobody fixed it.

However, it also comes with a presumption of guilt. So if there are any state crimes involved, that's where they'd be strung up. Hence, why the NY investigation would be important to watch. (at least I think that's what I read on those far left loonie Twitters)

FTA:  His effort to see if the case could be dropped showed a troubling disregard for the traditional wall between the White House and the Justice Department, and taken together with similar actions could undermine respect for the rule of law, experts said...

Trump's spring inquiry about intervening in Arpaio's case is consistent with his alleged attempts to influence the federal investigation of Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser. Trump also made separate appeals in March to Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats and National Security Agency Director Michael S. Rogers to publicly deny the existence of any evidence of collusion between the Russians and the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

Well, seems that this all jibes with the idea that he is not a politician.  As his defenders always say, he's different.

Federalist No. 68 is irrelevant, because it's about the system where electors weren't bound to vote for the President the populace chose. We no longer have that system. So it's completely senseless to talk about the purpose of it. Nobody ever intended the system we have to result in an event like Trump (or in Bush II).

Basically the president can't pardon state crimes, he only has authority to pardon federal offenses. That's why a state case would be interesting.

I know that part. The interesting part (if true) is that when you pardon someone, that it comes with an assumption of guilt. So a state crime could be built, confirmed, or worsened by the guilt from a federal pardon.

I'm sorry.  But I don't think there's any coming back from this.  Everything Trump has done has paved the way for future presidents to do, plus-one.

Even if he gets impeached, or voted out, or just finishes his time in office, all the stuff that he's done will have set precedent for the next leader and the one after that and so on.

maybe NYAG brings charges first? No pardons for those crimes. Then the onus is on the congress to impeach. then Mueller brings his charges once Trump can't pardon.

I don't understand. Trump is literally destroying your country before your very eyes, and yet no one seems capable or willing to stop him. An entire third of your country think it's super awesome. If this happened in my country, I'd be thinking of taking care of things myself. He's just a man after all. He isn't superhuman.

Obama is the most amazing president ever, he could do absolutely nothing and was totally incompetent and yet at the same time he was the absolute dictator who destroyed all our lives while also having a magic time machine that he could use to start the Afghanistan and Iraq wars and start health care reform 10 years before he was in office.  Seriously fark Republicans, you hated Obama for nothing and gave us Turd Trump?  I will never vote for another Republican at any level ever again, congrats guys.

For most of us, there is nothing we can do.  THere isn't a day I'm not sad anyone voted for the racist, xenophobic, narcissistic sexual assaulter-in-chief.

I'm literally sick to my stomach over it.  I wish I didn't know any of it.  Ignorance is bliss, after all.
