huh, you know, i didn't think of it at the time i saw this story this morning but having seen the queue with all the Mueller-Trump stories, i wonder if something big is about to drop or someone closer to Donald, like a son or something, got raided/subpoenad today/yesterday and this is him lashing out because he has a terrible tell that we figured out several revelations ago.

Despite an RNC platform that is overwhelmingly anti-gay, Donald Trump in his speech on Thursday mentioned the Orlando massacre and said that he "will do everything in my power to protect our LGBTQ citizens from the violence and oppression of the hateful, foreign ideology, believe me," in reference to fundamentalist Islamic.

Who's going to protect us from this administration?

You mean the misdirection about the budget and threatening a government shutdown unless Congress funds his border wall, part of which is to be paid by eliminating the medical costs associated with erectile dysfunction trans servicepeople?

I'm trying to think of any issue like this where the government granted a right to a group of people that they didn't previously have, and then subsequently revoked that right. The closest example I can think of is when blacks were given the right to vote after the Civil War, but then southern states gradually took away that right through various means of voter suppression. But even then, I don't think they outright revoked their right to vote, even if the effect was the same. Your thoughts?

He said that he'd protect the LGBT community from Islamic radicals. Since there's been 0 attacks from Muslims on LGBTs since Orlando, so Trump did his job, libtard, and since Caitlyn likes Trump and Caitlyn = all transgender people, therefore his approval rating is 100% with the transgender community. Did you think about THAT?

Civilian leadership of the military is a very valuable thing, and while not being discriminatory assholes to trans people is a remarkable step it is not worth having a military junta.  Those simply don't work out well.  Congress needs to act.  Good luck, I know, but EOs are fragile things.

On a related topic, why the hell are we still calling Secretary Mattis "General?"  There are lots of generals; perhaps too many if you want to get wonky on military budgets and mission effectiveness, but there is only one SECDEF.  He's a civilian now and  his new title is a promotion.

This is a perfect illustration to end any argument about Trump "being honest and actually following through on what he says".

He is an asshole who constantly contradicts his own words. He was before he ran for office, and the greatest responsibility our nation has to offer has not changed him at all. Before Trump, I wasn't involved in politics at all, had no interest. I thought that no matter who was elected, our way of life in America couldn't really be that bad compared to the rest of the world. Then this joke went too far.

I'm pretty sure you're correct in that one should always be called by their highest-held title, unless one is acting in the capacity of their current position, and then their current position should be used. For instance, if Barack Obama ran for Senate again and won, he would be referred to as "Senator" while in the Senate chambers and "Mr. President" outside the Senate. Mattis should be referred to as "Secretary", since he's now telling Generals what to do.

I don't know why this protocol is not being followed.

The military isn't obligated to obey an unlawful order. Banning transgender people has to be shown unlawful for them to reject such an order.

That means the justice system would have to get involved. So if this Exec. Order is executed, we wait and see if a lawsuit is filed. Or you contact the ACLU yourself and get them on it.

If they can provide clear evidence that it is an illegal order, military officers are compelled to disobey them.  I'm open to hearing how this would be, however, since it was not a change in federal law that allowed open service by trans people, only an EO.

Congress needs to act.

The craziest thing about this is it isn't even what anti-LBGT activists were pressing to have happen: they were mostly looking for DHA (formerly Tricare) to no longer cover GCS/related care for trans officers under a belief it was cosmetic/elective/conflicted with their sincerely held religious beliefs that their tax dollars should not fund it.

Trump just said "we've decided no more trans officers in the military! Too expensive!" and is leaving it up to the military to come up with a plan to act on his statement in the next 6 months.

The trans ban announcement was a response to the raid, but the whole going through official channels is likely just Trump being stubborn and refusing to admit any mistake, and White House officials trying to save face by making it official since Trump refuses to back down since he sees them as weak enough to bully.
