I don't get the end game here, if he succeeds in diminishing Trump's base...how is that a win for Bannon/Breitbart? Is this about making money for them a la the other shills like Coulter et al, or is this some sort of cause that strikes him as "noble".

So the derp crew that got Trump into office is now going to be the derp crew that takes him out?  Or is this Breitbart's death spiral as the Trumpistas leave en mass because Trump is now being criticized?

It'll be interesting to watch.  Too bad it may cause massive problems in the country/world.

\who to root for?

I think they're trying to peel off Trump's supporters now, so they can use them for a different candidate in the future. We'll know for sure if they start a slew of "Trump's not a 'real' conservative. Come join us!. We're the REAL conservatives!" articles.

It gives them a semblance of credibility, of being willing to 'speak truth to power.' From now on, the base can believe everything they say as gospel truth.

He's a nationalist. He lost out in the power struggle within, so he's attacking the interventionist wing of the white house from the outside.

Isn't Bannon ridiculously loaded already?  I think this is more about "my way or scorched earth".  It's why "mainstream" Republicans have been hesitant in the past to embrace raging assholes like Bannon.

I have to admit, "his McMaster's voice" is pretty good agitprop. That's gonna sting.

How about just the collision of oversized egos

Both Bannon and Trump are convinced they are never wrong, therefore anyone who opposes or contradicts is  an enemy

Stop writing articles about them, it lends them legitimacy when they're nothing more than racists writing fake news.

Going on what he said about the Trump Presidency being "over" I'd say Bannon is doing what he does best, purifying the base.

FTFA: Articles liken the president's approach to Obama's, and blame the national security adviser for the tone of the address.

Does that answer your question?  He wants to undermine everyone who isn't a part of his swamp and return, triumphant, to the good graces and secret controls of the Toddler-in-chief.

This is the reason. They're not trying to damage Trump but rather make Trump's base go against McMaster so that Trump ends up getting rid of him.

Bannon's going to war.

Not, you know, an actual war, where the only question would be if someone could put a bullet in his fat ass before he died of heart failure from the unprecedented attempt at doing something athletic, but a war of words conducted from his couch.

He'll still declare Trump is the best thing since sliced oranges.

Three potential theories:

1. Bannon is still attempting to steer Trump's agenda, and is hoping that public criticism will smart much more that the private criticism that he used to offer. Very little pisses off Don more than a previously friendly media outlet offering criticism.

2. Bannon has much more celebrity than he did before he was in Trump's administration, and is attempting cash in on that celebrity to shift the Overton window further and further towards unadulterated populist nationalism. If he gets enough traction, any Republican left of Pinochet will become a centrist, and any Democrat who suggests that maybe we should participate in the UN and not treat non-whites as second-class citizens might as well be Stalin.

3. Bannon has crossed the moral event horizon, and no longer has a philosophical guiding principle other than pure rage. The world has rejected him, and now he will have his revenge. His president may have abandoned him, and his liver may be soon to follow, but in the time between now and then, he can still make his enemies suffer. He can still take sick pleasure in imagining Donald saying "Why, Steve, why?" as he reads critical Breitbart headlines.

...And when the inky black hate in his heart becomes strong enough, and the anger in his veins coalesces to tarry spite, he will no longer need his liver. No longer need blood or air. He will be the incarnation of thanatos, powered by the desecration of the beautiful and the corruption of the innocent and the dust of shattered dreams. He will become a focal point for all of the destructive impulses of humanity, and he will absorb them, amplify them, and regurgitate them back into us, drawing us unto himself, until that dark and glorious day when humanity will consume itself in an orgy of blood and terror and ecstasy, and the screams of our rending will make the cyclopean mouths of the great Azathoth twitch in a bemused smile as he dreams of eternal Unbeing.
