But Nintendo promised me that they made 'significantly more' of these than they did the NES Classic

Problem is, making 1,000 of them would have been more than the NES Classic.

/bloody Nintendo. Just let me throw my money at you

If you have are typing this on a PC, smart phone, or pretty much anything else,

CONGRATS! You already own a SNES/NES/Sega/PS1,2,3/Xbox/Xbox360...

I know, and I do have a decent emulator setup.  Doesn't mean this isn't still a nice piece of Nintendo history in a great package.  And by all accounts, the emulations on the NES Classic was superb and some of the best those games have played since the actual NES.

If you are handy with a soldering gun, you can make your own controllers using pinouts on the interwebs for about $4 total per controller (NES and SNES).

I would suggest building a crap computer if you're going to get all gung-ho on the games, though.  A lot of the mods are on sites that are really filthy with cooties.

Perception is part of the gaming experience and playing a "console" game on an actual console and a proper television, and immersing yourself in the game as it was played "way back when", is cooler than playing it on a Facebook hugbox.

I am not saying this because I am sitting on a copy of the ultra-rare "Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt", and attempting to drive up the market, by marketing the joys of console games on a medium-sized internet message board.  I do it because I love my hobby, and I love you, too.

This reminds me of the argument over vinyl vs. digital.  Some people just want the real deal.  I'm still kicking myself for selling off my SNES and Chrono Trigger for 40$ a million years ago. I do have a working yellowed NES and a crate of about 200 titles collecting dust somewhere.

Emulator controllers farking suck, too.

It is ultimately marketing/keeping their name out there for when they release their next "more of the same"  yet "only slightly changed"product.

No, they just don't care very much. What they want are all these news articles about how popular their product is and how it sells out instantly.

It's still not been up for pre-order in Canada, but I already know that my local best buy will sell 100% of stock to the 3 Asian guys who go around buying up anything and everything to re-sell on Craigslist, and Gamestop simply won't honor the pre-orders anyway. And there aren't any other game stores. Yay?

What's most disappointing about this is when the fabric of reality breaks down and the internet message board posts time-travel from the year 1988, but then you realize, it still works in 2017, because Nintendo has never not been assholes.

But their games are so good, I'm going to buy a second Switch, because they don't care about the money, they just want me to be happy.

This.

I wasn't happy that my wife spent around $200 for my NES classic, but considering they announced they won't be making any more about 2 weeks later, I'm glad she did it when she did.

My son loves it too, but he isn't old enough to play it yet.  Hopefully I can pass it down to him someday.

I wouldn't see myself putting an emulator onto a PC (for anything), it just isn't the same.

Ha!  During the last SNES craze, I saw the same thing at my local Walgreens.  That place is in a shiatty part of town, and the ones they had were there a little while before selling.

Good a place as any to ask this: Does anybody have a recommendation for a good emulator front-end for Windows?  I currently launch emulators through a Kodi plug-in, but it's not great.  I've been meaning to find a better solution for a while now.  It would be for a home theater setup, so I would need to be able to navigate easily via controller input.

That's an easy repair. The thing to watch out for is bad capacitors in the SNES. It's not frequent but I had it happen to me. Now I have a Super Famicom that I use to play my SNES games.

Looks like I'll be waiting outside a store at 2 AM when it comes out.

Sony: We need to stay relevant! We need quality original titles, and let's give our customers access to download indie games!

Microsoft: We need to stay relevant! Gear all of our marketing power towards the common bro!

Nintendo: Let's sell them the same technology that we did 20-30 years ago, pretend that we can't make enough to meet demand, and watch the salivating dogs tear each other apart over stale bread.

Except that didn't happen last time around.  They had a super hyped, heavily demanded item, and just killed it.  Seems like they are doing the same here.

It will get a limited release, then be killed, because they don't care about this device and want to end it just as quick.  The ideal is getting people to pay $5-15 a rom via virtual console on their shiny new $300 switch, and not the snes/nes/etc classics.

I've actually learned that London Drugs is a good place to look for stuff. Either no one shops there, or their supply chain is about 8 months behind. (I totally got a Star Wars PSP brand new when they were impossible to get and selling for stupid money on eBay because of that.)

styckx: "short supply" money grab

I'm not sure how it's a money grab.  It's not like they see an extra dime from the jacked up secondary market sales.

I still think these will be easier to find in stores then the NES Classic when released.  I imagine the instant sellout of pre-orders is due to everyone jumping on it because of the debacle last year.  But if it isn't, oh well.  I get being frustrated at not being able to buy one, but I don't get a lot of the vitriol thrown Nintendo's way.  It's really no different than any other limited edition product out there.

2017-08-22 01:04:19 PM

So I probably won't end up with one.  I already have an emulator setup but it is not the same, even with a SNES style controller.

It isn't a limited edition, as that indicates there is a standard non-limited edition available. This is a limited product. And it is a slap in the face for fans to hype up a product that you know the vast majority will never be able to get.

NeoCortex42: And by all accounts, the emulations on the NES Classic was superb and some of the best those games have played since the actual NES.

PC NES and SNES emulators have been more-or-less cycle-accurate for quite awhile now. It isn't going to get much better visually unless you get a little crazy and buy a PVM or an old PC CRT and manage to output to one of those at 240p. What people should be going crazy for is a hypothetical N64 classic, as N64 emulation pretty much stopped development right after UltraHLE.

Has anyone mentioned emulators yet? Been playing NES, SNES, Genesis and Atari games on an old XP PC for well over a decade. Recently tried out an android box and they look great at 1080p! I can save my framemeister level money for more fun things like buying up old albums and cassettes.

You're playing semantics with "limited edition" vs "limited product."  They're virtually one in the same.  This thing is a collectable.  No different than the rest of the collectable market where things are produced in limited quantities.  I just don't get the hostility.  I'm not go out of my way to get it, whether that means waiting in lines or paying obscene markups, but I'd pick one up otherwise.  If not, then no big deal.  I guess it's just not my thing.  But rhetoric like "slap in the face" just seems a little over the top.

Antimatter: The ideal is getting people to pay $5-15 a rom via virtual console on their shiny new $300 switch, and not the snes/nes/etc classics.

The thing that gets me about Nintendo's plan is not only that they're refusing to make enough to satisfy demand (there's no logical reason to not do this... they're leaving money on the table), but they steadfastly refuse to try and monetize their catalog on other platforms. I know emulators are popular, but can you imagine if Nintendo would go ahead and package these games into an officially supported emulation program and create bluetooth versions of the actual controllers? They could sell the same games on PC, Mac, iOS, and Android and then turn around and sell the controller hardware too. But they're only interested in people playing Nintendo games on Nintendo equipment, and even those they can't make in any appreciable quantity.

They're a public corporation, I'm surprised the shareholders haven't demanded this kind of thing.

2017-08-22 02:32:08 PM
Preorders went up in Canada at Best Buy and EB Games and were sold out online in less than five minutes.  I went from "item in cart" to "sold out online" at 1:03pm (went up at 1:00).

Extremely fortunately, was able to snag one from EB Games in-store, and only had to wait about ten minutes in line, but this is a ridiculous song-and-dance.  That we can't be guaranteed that Nintendo will make enough to meet demand is really stupid.

2017-08-22 02:32:43 PM
"Hey, a bunch of people... like a metric farkton of people want to buy this thing, this ancient hardware that can't be worth half of what we are selling it for.   I know, lets make less of the thing so everyone hates us and we only make a few buckets of money instead of truckloads!"

Seriously, what the fark kind of strategy is this?

"You mean just like we farked it up last time with the NES?"
"BRILLIANT!"

2017-08-22 02:35:30 PM
Looks like Target had their pre-orders up and sold out in the past hour or so.

Because everybody has time to just sit and camp out websites at 1 in the morning or in the middle of the work day.  Would be one thing if they announced in advance when the damn things were going up.

2017-08-22 03:06:23 PM
This whole thing is pissing me off and actively disincentivizing me from buying a switch.

It reeks of some third party with a contract and Nintendo hoping to kill it as fast as possible so the third party doesn't make any money.

I'm now determined to make a good emulator box and pirate the shiat out of their software.

2017-08-22 03:10:55 PM
Welp, there is about 50 of them available at the low price of $275-$475!
