Yep.  IIRC his grandmother or great grandmother was a Cherokee princess.  Somewhere I have a great biography that mentions that.

There's Robbie Robertson. While with The Band and Dylan, he didn't emphasize his Native blood, but he did with some of his solo work. His soundtrack simply titled "Music From The Native Americans" is fantastic.

Their high-energy style melds traditional Native American and punk rock into an "alter-Native" attitude with strong sociopolitical messages about government oppression, relocation of indigenous people, ecocide, genocide, domestic violence, and human rights.

My late Uncle, himself a Blues musician, knew members from Redbone and XIT.  And he knew Jessie Ed Davies back in the day when both were in Los Angeles.  He was still saddened about Davies' death, and the lack of investigation into it by the police, as he was seen as "Just another drunk Indian".

Cool, thanks, I had not heard of them before.

This is a really cool piece of genuine folk music continuity:
"Their their political activism attracted the attention of Nora Guthrie, daughter of legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie . She allowed them to set music to some of his unreleased and unpublished lyrics. By next year, they released a two-track EP titled Woody Guthrie Singles."

That looks like something commissioned by some totalitarian state government ministry of culture.

Another good doc about native Americans is Reel Injun. It might still be on Netflix.

Saw them at the http://ithacafestival.org/  some time in the past when you could still camp within 50m of three stages.  Hit the festival for six years in a row then it got too big for my taste. The LEOs were very mellow and everyone got along.  There were, and still are, a bunch of First Nation or Native bands or solo acts.

Recall seeing a group called the Blue Rags who were blowing people away.  Sunk $45 into their CDs.  The CDs blew rancid goats.  So it goes.
