Better late than never, I guess. I knew this event was going to go on but I got trainwrecked by what happened over the weekend.

I'm planning on going for the celebrations around Halloween.

Where do you live? I like that part of the desert. Actual vegetation and a river with water. Although I prefer Bisbee over Tombstone. Haven't been in 10-12 years though, but we used to do Bisbee every year for a small-town 4th when we lived in Phoenix.

What's funny is, he supports and refutes his point in the article. Both make sense, so whichever it really is is good for me.

detonator: I always wondered what "my huckleberry friend " meant in " moon river"

Huckleberry was basically "no account". A person of little importance, either personally or socially. Hence, Huckleberry Finn. In the song, I assume it was meant as a term of endearment.

So it's an ancient southern colloquialism? Hmm.
Thanks--- I'm a west coast resident my entire 56 years and always wondered that. Your definition makes complete sense.

Google isn't much help on the quote but read varying articles to the quote being both huckleberry and huckle bearer.
I watched the film clip and still not 100% sure.  And then I read this:

"In the old Georgia (where Doc Holiday originated) the men who would bear (carry) your coffin in a funeral procession wore small huckleberry branches in their lapels. They became know as the "Huckle Bearers". When Doc says "I'm your huckleberry" he means that he is your coffin bearer..... or more to the point... he will be the one to PUT you in your coffin."

moon river is a cool song but I've never seen Breakfast at Tiffany's..never more than bits and pieces of it..

because I know it has an unhappy ending and life is too short to spend hours only to cry at the end.

Probably a little of column A, a little of column B.

He's been ill these past few years.  The past six months or so, they guy has been incredibly open and nice to his fans, doing epically long "Ask Me Anything" Q & A's over at Reddit, spending 10+ hours and giving detailed, thoughtful responses to questions, being very nice and funny - all things that I never associated  with him.  I've always loved his work, both comedic and dramatic, but I've understood him to be cool and distant.  Lately, he's Mr Nice Guy.  Maybe his poor health changed his views on things.  I know when I got very ill, it made me look at life differently.

Realizing he was about to die in anonymity makes a person appreciate their fame.

I heard on someone's podcast the other day that Val had/has throat cancer.

Sucks if true, wish I could remember who it was that said it and which podcast.

I live about 20 minutes from Tombstone this was quite a big deal in our little corner of the world. I heard 20000 people were there for the "Doc Holidays" weekend and thought, where the hell did they park? Ive gone to Tombstone on a random Friday and had trouble finding a good spot.
