The "Save the Whales" crowd really should stick to protesting the Japanese "research whalers" and others of that ilk.

Leave the the traditional hunters alone. They take a small number of animals every year to feed themselves. Ship strikes probably kill more whales than these guys do.

I don't have any problem with people hunting for their own subsistence.

And if I were him or his family I wouldn't sweat a bunch of self righteous idiots whining about it either.

He used an an explosive munition. Hardly a traditional hunter.  The community hunts whales to reduce their food costs since they need to get everything by boat, so they are doing it for money.  They are not alone, small groups around the globe still hunt small numbers of whales for food.  The Japanese "research" ships are the worst.  The Japanese have largely lost their taste for whale, most of the meat gets turned into pet food.  Very little research is done.

Dear stupid white folks,

Please shut the fark up about native subsistence hunters. They live a hard life that you couldn't even imagine, let alone survive for one season. So go sit in your warm, dining on your 'free range', gluten free, all-vegan, processed nonsense and sip on your half caf macchiato grande and kindly shut the fark up. I'm not surprised that this was instigated by that walking prepuce, Paul Watson.

I've spent 10 months of my life in the kuskoquim bay. I met LOTS of really cool yupik people and it is admirable that they try to maitain their ancient ways of life.

However, I felt even at the time (2009-10) that their way of life was not gonna last forever. And it's not because of protesters, it's just creeping modernism. Most communities rely on bush planes, gas and diesel to exist. 4 wheelers and snowmobiles are their main transport. Their children know there is an easier life in the south and they take the opportunity to leave and never come back.

And as it gets more and more expensive to subsidize these communities and services get cut, they have even less reason to return.

It is a triumph of human ingenuity that we've settled there at all, but really, it's like a vacuum. Nature abhors a vacuum and eventually they will be gone.

Everybody should see the bering sea at least once in their lives. In the summer the coast might as well be a different planet than earth because you can't see any evidence of mankind.

It doesn't sound like a vacuum at all.  Vacuums tend to be places people what to be, whether it be because of resources or something else that draw people there.  While it is void of a lot of people, it lacks draw; from your own words.  I'm not going to knock on these people, because their lives do have cool moments.  However, I don't disagree with leaving such a harsh environment.  Sounds like stubbornness to cling to something for tradition sake.  Then again, most Americans are descended from people who were willing to move around the world for something better for survival's sake.  If they didn't, I wouldn't exist.

There's basically two reasons to not hunt whales:
1) They're endangered
2) They're sentient intelligent creatures

In the case of Japanese whalers, #1 is not relevant, as they hunt Minke whales, which are not endangered.

#2 is a purely moral thing, and hunting them for sustenance is no excuse. If you're protesting Japanese whalers for that reason, you should also be protesting traditional whalers.

You're thinking like a Westerner.  They are not farmers and don't need farms.

They are hunter-gatherers and fishermen.  They know what they are doing, even when it means thumbing their nose at Western conceptions of 'endangered' or 'conservation'.  Live for now, the future is meaningless.

They are also alcoholics.

They did just fine before white folks came, and will do just fine after white folks leave.

What white folks see as barren and empty, they know as normal.  The older people know where the food is, and are content to eat it as they always have.  The younger people can either learn, do drugs or leave.

Ok, and?  I hunt deer, elk, pheasant, grouse, goose, and duck to reduce my food costs.  I also spear fish, line fish and dive for lobster.  As long as I'm doing it legally, I don't care if you or anyone else has a problem with how I do it, and for what reason.  Whales are big.  I know next to nothing about how to hunt them, but I would guess that using some sort of explosive would be a way to do it fast and efficiently.

My only comment is that they are not hunting whales using traditional methods like some other native peoples.  As long as they have the proper permits and the whale population is large and healthy then it is not much different than deer or other game.  We live in the era of Cecil the lion and hunting whales greatly upsets some people, who should not be posting threats to this teenager online.

They can use explosive harpoons and get a quick kill or use nonexplosive harpoons and get the kill by having the whale exhaust itself to death by dragging several skiffs behind it, swimming in fear and bewilderment until its heart gives out.

Which do you think is the more ethical way to hunt?
