This is the absolute easiest thing in society to condemn. Actual nazis, invading a town, wearing swastikas, doing the salutes, carrying signs that that Jews are Satan, killing people. This wasn't just racists with the rebel flag, as much as I hate those guys. ACTUAL NAZIS, THE ONES WE FOUGHT IN THE WORST WAR THIS PLANET HAS EVER SEEN. The bad guys that you can put in any story and the beholder knows that whoever is fighting them is the hero.

Even if you're an asshole, this is your free pass to prove to everyone you aren't a complete asshole. Just by pointing out that Nazis are bad. Even if all you care about is political capital, you can have it.

And Trump won't do it. The guy will condemn Meryl Streep and The Pope (for saying that people should be nice), but he will not condemn the Nazis.

All those Americans who died on the Western Front...sorry, but Trump likes soldiers who didn't die fighting Nazis.

He's an agitator, screaming at other narcissistic leaders like he's in a dick measuring contest, failing to point out what today was, and failing to lead. Does the GOP get it or care, though? Remember, this is the party of the Southern Strategy. The party that has made racism a wink-wink, nod-nod part of their platform for decades. A party composed almost entirely of White "Christians".

Republicans are going to have to do a lot more to purge racism and anti-Semitism from the party before I'm convinced that the outrage stems not from disgust of bigotry, but from disgust that the Alt-Right is airing the GOP's dirty laundry in public.

Of course not.  But expect them to quadruple down now that they finally understand how deeply they've painted themselves into a corner.

I didn't see many Antifa at that protest.  I saw a lot of ordinary Americans that resolved to tackle an issue our leadership should have tended to when it began.

well - the ACA repeal failed, and trump hasn't moved a damn thing on the republican legislative agenda.  Trump couldn't even condemn a domestic terror attack on US soil, which tells you something about him right there.  the republicans aren't going to  take the blame for trump's weak answer to this terror attack, and I think they're done covering for the incompetence and white house chaos.  they just need an opportunity to rid themselves of trump.

It's a shame that the WWII generation for the most part has died out.

I know my dad, who was shot at the Battle of the Bulge and spent 6 months in a hospital fighting to keep from having his arm amputated and who saw so many of his friends die in battle from Italy, France and Germany even in his 60s/70s would have probably at least tried to wade into that crowd to try and beat some nazi ass. (and tough/strong motherfarker he was would have probably succeeded to some degree.)

Without having the same "voice" they did just 20-30 yrs ago by shear numbers, it's a damned shame that so many of them who would have had no problem denouncing all these neo-nazi farks and carrying the day.  Now, there's just a handful of them around to put things in perspective.

Problem is for these Republicans who are finally saying something, they should have been saying the same back when Trump was considering filling his inner circle with the farkheads who, if not actually supporters of these neo-nazi scumbuckets, certainly appear sympathetic to the cause.  People like Gorka, Bannon, Miller, etc., who hold top spots in the Trump regime should have been named by name, publicly repudiated and pressure brought to at least use their positions to denounce these farks BEFORE things got to this point.  Hell, Gorka goes around wearing a farking NAZI pin and lies to cover it up and unfortunately, too many of these same Republicans were too cowardly to call him out on it.

I can remember all my life people asking the following question:  How did a relatively "sane" Germany end up supporting the nazi farks they did and end up following those insane nazi farks in destroying their country?   People better wake up to the fact that we are seeing the answer to that question in action and if we don't get our shiat together, we could end up just as farked as the Germans if we keep down this path with Trump and his deplorables and don't take action in the next election, by a considerable margin, to reject these farking klan and neo-nazi scum.

It's not that weird, given who's running the Justice Department. He gets to look noble, the Justice Department gets to softpedal it, and Trump gets to claim that justice was done when they slap this asshole on the wrist (or not even bother to do anything) and send him on his way.

This is the same Justice Department that's looking to dismantle affirmative action. The same Justice Department that decided the Civil Rights Act doesn't protect LGBT folks. At least Germany went down that path after losing a terrible war, enduring crushing reparations, and experiencing hyperinflation.

America... what?  Allowed gay people to marry? Endured implementation of a system to offer private health insurance with government subsidies, and Medicaid expansion? Increased the highest marginal income tax rate from 36% to 39.6%?

Not that *anything* excuses Nazi-ism, but the Germans actually suffered a great deal prior to embracing it. Comparatively, we're just throwing a tantrum because we had to share our toys.

Donald Trump only ever sits facing towards the cameras and hunched over.  Even in cases where he'd be seen from the side, he goes out of his way to be seen more from the front and oblique at worst.  He hunches over forwards to hide the gut and he wears super tight collars to reign in the turkey neck.  He's Taft level obese, but hides it pretty well with superbly tailored, greatly misshapen suits.  He's raised fat concealment to an art form.

Forget opulence, he's the face of efficient corpulence.

The republicans have had three decades to stop Trump.

This didn't start with Trump. This has been a key component of the republican party since, at least, the 70s. They've been happy to play pied piper to the KKK and neonazis for decades in order to get cheap votes, now they want to act surprised the house is overrun with vermin.

The republicans don't need to tweet about the problem, they need to burn their house down and spend a few decades rebuilding a new one.

Republicans don't have a problem with racists and right wing terrorists in their ranks.  They ARE racists and right wing terrorists. They made this happen on purpose for cheap votes, now they've lost control of it.

I hope anybody in the GOP who doesn't ALREADY have the constitution printed on toilet paper so they can wipe their ass with it every morning looked at their news today and realized the same thing.
Things they oughta consider in church this morning:

This happened on YOUR watch.
The nazis snuck in through YOUR door.
You were only warned about this by EVERYBODY.
This DEPLORABLE act got such a tepid non-denouncement from YOUR President that the Nazi newsletter called the POTUS statement a tacit approval of their actions, and celebrated.
Wring your hands and say this is bad all you want, but until Nazi shartloads go back to hiding in their basement again, YOU AND YOUR PARTY OWN THIS.

As I've said in other threads yesterday, don't talk about why Trump or whomever isn't calling it right wing racist terrorism. You'll be waiting forever for that. Start being proactive and take a page out of their book. That is, to bring back the treason laws for scum like him.

Why treason? If they're wearing any Nazi or Confederate memorabilia, both of which were nation states hostile to the US, then committing a crime under the auspices or influence of the said flag is by definition, giving aid or comfort to the enemies of the US. Doesn't matter if they're defunct or not, they still at one point posed war against the US.

Any felony acts committed while doing so should be considered 1st degree treason and carry the death penalty as a sentence if bodily harm is committed during the crime. If it's proven that said individuals have committed treason under the urging of a group via coercion or influence, the group as a whole is responsible as well.

Begoggle: JAGChem82: Begoggle: JAGChem82: Begoggle: JAGChem82: You can have non-liberal views on race and still want white racists to pay dearly for their crime

No, you really can't.

Really? When did Democrats start calling for the death penalty for hate crimes nationwide? Or for the firing squad for hate groups committing crimes?

I'm not defending right wingers in general, but political stances are more than just binary beliefs.

You offered a binary: "White racists should or should not pay dearly for their crimes?"
Liberals, generally, want that. Therefore if you have that view it's the same one liberals have.

Not with the death penalty, by and large. That's what I'm saying. Right wing style discipline (harsh sentences) is usually hypocritically applied, but rarely vocally and actively encouraged by liberal politicians.

You didn't mention the death penalty in your original post.
Some liberals support it, some don't. Some conservatives support it, some don't.
It depends on the crime - most people regardless of politics don't support it for every case of murder, and racial motivation isn't really relevant.

Going back and re-reading this conversation thread I think... I THINK... that he's saying that there's a lot of racists who don't approve of violence.  Ie. let's keep the races separated, 'I won't have my daughter dating no colored man' types, but who nonetheless abhor violence against other peoples.  'Live and let live, just do it somewhere away from me,' kind of thinking.

Which could well be far worse in the long run, because it's that sort of thinking that provides the fertile ground for the more overt and deadly forms of racism, like we saw this weekend.  This revival of Neo-Naziism in America didn't come from nowhere.  It's been hidden for a long time in this soft bigotry.

Yeah, I started typing this up to one of the many defenders of moderate republicans in the newsflash thread, then I realized they won't get it.

As long as these people are willing to vote for them they won't actually do a damn thing about it except use "strong words."  What did they expect from a president that wouldn't even condemn the support of David Duke because he "didn't know him personally?"

So I use a perfect quote by Edmund Burke to explain why anyone who allows these people's votes to align with theirs but write it off because they're "moderate."

And most of that is due to the way everything is so gerrymandered.  People are sick of this shiat. But when your district looks like a ten-armed octopus wearing a hat, with a monocle (the middle of a more liberal city that is part of a district that looks like a cat jumping through the air) not much you can do.

Filing law suits seems to has had some positive outcomes.
Barring that, donating money or time to organizations that file those suits is very helpful.

I am stupidly proud of having helped a tiny bit with the local League of Women Voters - they forced gerrymandering to the front and won a key victory in 2016 (and I got my first greenlit about it).

There is no quick fix but it's more important  to try than not.

But WE were the "racists" for pointing out their racism and Trump's use or racist rhetoric and racist "dog whistles" to try and attract these nazi/kkk farks to his side during the campaign.  And of course, Hillary was just awful for calling these POS "deplorables" and should have been ashamed for calling such great Americans by that name.

It may take more time, but I do believe at some point the more mainstream portion of the Republican party are going to have to recognize and own up to the fact that they have basically invited these racist POS into the "tent" by backing Trump.  At what point the majority are willing to at least stand up and be counted, by actually taking on these racist farks, as some are starting to do is another question altogether.  But if they don't and soon, they are going to drive away the vast majority of those who consider themselves "independent" and they are certainly going to lose the support of the mass majority of those under age 30. (Which would be a good thing.)

If that's what he's saying, it's true.
There are lots of different levels of racism. Most racists won't actively go out and harm someone or even break any laws. Most racists condemn law-breakers, especially violent ones.
Many (most?) racists don't even think they are racists, of course.
And of course everyone is racist at some point (Avenue Q).

Trumps comments were masterful.  He has normalized race based violence, and equated oppressors with the oppressed fighting back, all while making a statement that hios staff can defend as 'Of course he is condemning violent white supremecists".  They just don't state that he is concurrently equating their aggressive actions with the actions of those fighting against oppression.

Again, sane, reasonable people are not the target for his comments.  He is trying to solidify his rabid core.  Note how he goes crazy if a brown or Muslim individual commits any kind of crime, and uses that to support his racists policies, but at a demonstration based around the idea of hate and bigotry, filled with people who use violence and intimidation to deal with their inadequacies, after this demonstration is predictably violent, he avoids blaming the source.

On the other hand, I guess their is something to be said for a politician sticking by his constituency.  It just happens that his constituents are terrified, little people who see the only way to make themselves relevant is through mob based intimidation and violence.

Trump has been great for me personally to evaluate my friends.  If you voted for Trump and, at this time, have not reversed your position, I know that you are too stupid, too mean spirited, or too bigoted for me to associate with,

We'll have to see what the facts are.

Why would a president resign because people think his phrasing wasn't strong enough?
Particularly a president who wakes up with his foot in his mouth and is lucky if he extracts it for 30 seconds before bedtime.

While Trump's words should have been stronger, I don't see how anyone can take that they condoned what these fascists were up to over the last couple of days.

On the other hand, Neo Nazis are hardly the smartest bunch...

Have you ever looked up the definition of "fascist"?

For fark's sake, we have people goosestepping around and chanting 'Heil Trump' and we STILL have idiots with the 'No, YOU'RE the nazis' bullshiat?

Own your shiat, man.

It's always the same people, too.  Just mark them pink or something and pass them over while reading comments.

Do you think he would offend his BASE???

serpent_sky: Target Builder: On one hand it's good to see a fair number of GOP Senators explicitly call out the white supremcists and not shy away from describing this as a terror attack.

On the other hand it shouldn't normally be surprising to see Senators condem an attack of this sort with the blunt language it deserves.

There is precedent for killing and injuring people with a car in Europe, and it is always called a terror attack, so why wouldn't it be here?

For sure. 100% in agreement that's what this was. I'm just surprised to see high level members of the GOP actually using that term to describe a white right wing terrorist.

It's a fine statement. I won't give him much, but I will give him that.

Maybe I'm too cynical to even give Cruz even that much. I'm certain it was calculated.

I'm certain it was calculated and expedient rather than heartfelt (except in the sense that Cruz wholeheartedly believes in acting in his own perceived best political interest*). I mean no more than to say that these words are good.

Do they tape all that extra skin back before scheduled appearances or something? How does he do it?

Donald Trump only ever sits facing towards the cameras and hunched over.  Even in cases where he'd be seen from the side, he goes out of his way to be seen more from the front and oblique at worst.  He hunches over forwards to hide the gut and he wears super tight collars to reign in the turkey neck.  He's Taft level obese, but hides it pretty well with superbly tailored, greatly misshapen suits.  He's raised fat concealment to an art form.

Forget opulence, he's the face of efficient corpulence.

I've gained 50 pounds since I was in high school playing sports, luckily I'm able to hide it.  I'm not sure how Donnie does it, but like the saying goes, don't do what Donnie don't does.

I've gained about 45lbs since I stopped growing taller at age 12. Most of that was me filling out a nearly 6ft tall and fairly stocky frame. 210lbs is about what I'm supposed to weigh because I'm part of the Amazon brigade.

I've seen women about my size just look fat because because their bone structure is more typically feminine and they should weigh about what Taylor Swift does.

Some people carry their weight very well. Someone else with the same height could  just look aweful.

Taft looked good for someone as obese as he was. Trump looks like a caricature of a human being.

We are cut of the same cloth. Iggy list cowards are annoying especially those who announce it like a badge of pride - it is not. yellow farkie for them.

Are most red 5, with a small number who have graduated upward? I don't think anyone has made it above red3. Certainly no red1.

I used to use Red 1 but I use color inversion on my phone sometimes so Red 3 works best for me.  I use other shades of Red for people I'm not sure if they are trolling or not.
Either way, I've never had someone day they were going to ignore me.  It's a guarantee I'm not going to ignore them.
