Anything I've heard her sing, it's like she's bellowing as loud as she can. Maybe back off a little. They have amplifiers now.

This was the argument my friend made a few days ago. She's a voice and piano teacher. I would add to it that it's so obvious how many little things she does wrong hi there because she wants to or hasn't been told not to.  I admit, I am sometimes guilty of the same, but I'm not out there making millions, just a couple of grand around Christmas time.

Oh, no doubt about that. Everything I do is wrong when I sing. Don't care, I'll strum louder to make up for it.

Learning how to use your instrument properly without damaging it is difficult. To have a long singing career, you either need years of private coaching, a degree in Vocal Music, or a lot of luck.

See above. He was getting into opera when he started getting sick. It's pretty much how he worked up the power so sing half the stuff on Innuendo. I can only dream of having the talent he had.

While a typical vibrato will fluctuate between 5.4 Hz and 6.9 Hz, Mercury's was 7.04 Hz. To look at that in a more scientific way, a perfect sine wave for vibrato assumes the value of 1, which is pretty close to where famous opera singer Luciano Pavarotti sat. Mercury, on the other hand, averaged a value of 0.57, meaning he was vibrating something in his throat even Pavarotti couldn't move.

However, the forments in the classical voice ring clear. The pop voice generally doesn't have those forments.

"Oversinging" is the perfect word.  Harry makes a lot of good points -  just understand the song and sing it.  Making it yours doesn't involve singing 20 notes to hit one, and doing that isn't "improvising".

I guess I'd never thought about WHY I liked him other than he's cool and the music is good.  I had no idea he was ever involved with American Idol.  His advice of back off and sing the damn song that was written is amazingly simple and good advice.  I get so tired of all the various made up notes and runs in music but never quite had the words to know what to say about it.  What a great video.  Thanks for posting.  Now I know exactly why I hate Mariah Carey's singing.
