Remember when Vice President Cheney was investigated, tried and found guilty of war profiteering for being the CEO of Halliburton and starting a war for fictitious reasons and then his former company was the only company that was allowed to bid for the 7 Billon dollar contract there in Iraq?
Remember?

20 yrs ago when i was in the service, all the Marines knew Smedly Butler's name because he was a higly decorated Marine, but they had no idea he also wrote that.  Probably still don't.  Maybe its a dumb idea for a soldier to read that, but its telling how thier superiors talked up his service record while pretending his anti war crusade didn't exist.

As much as I hate to admit it, the fact that Xi called Pres. Trump last night encouraging restraint and committing support to resolve peacefully may be an indication that Trump's approach is having the desired effect.  The DPRK is China's problem, and they need to fix it.  I would expect to see Pres. Trump take a move diplomatic approach now and give them a chance to rein in Kim a bit.

If that happens, I think we'll see the stock market values return rather quickly.  I did put in sell orders, but they're well below where the market sits right now.  I did move some funds from maturing CDs to gold in late July (as it appears much of the world has done) as a bit of a hedge.  I expect it to cross $1300 in weekend trading, but I don't expect the price to stay above $1250/oz too long - assuming the rhetoric is toned down a bit.

The stock market is so. If and so complicated that it's difficult if not impossible to draw direct cause and effect connections between news events and stocks.

This tendency is probably my top gripe about the news.

How come Trump isn't tweeting about how the global stock market lost $1 trillion because the world is freaking out about a nuclear war with North Korea?

You mean to tell me, subby, that Trump's Twitter feed is really just a mechanism for self-promotion and not an  unbiased account of all things newsworthy?

I feel duped.  I guess it's back to FoxNews/MSNBC for me.

2017-08-12 08:18:05 AM
The simple answer is that Trump will never EVER take credit when something bad happens that may be his fault.  He will only take credit for things that are good.  He will do this whether he actually did something, or if he can simply take credit, and no one will know any better.

In fact, he will take credit for good things that other people did, and everyone knows it - and he'll STILL take credit for them.

I just seeded my Roth with $2500 so that I can finally invest it in some mutual fund to start growing.  was trying to hit that target with a $50 a month contribution and was taking forever; got a windfall so here I am.

I know you can't time the market, but it looks like a good time to pick something.

I have been investing in general index funds in my 401k; was thinking about something more fun in the roth like a pharma mutual fund or something in the medical sector.  Is there a defense sector fund?

note: I am with Fidelity.

The price of oil isn't freaking out. That's what I watch. A decade ago, someone with explosives in a zodiac hit the USS Cole and the price jumped twenty percent in a day. Watch that.

Dead cat bounce. People sensing a buy opportunity for stocks and push the market up a bit. Bots do most of the trading nowadays.
Made some money in the VIX the last couple of days. (kinda gambling)
