Attention all people in Arizona worried about Lizard Man. I have a limited supply of Anti-Lizard Man Mystical Stones. If you hold the stone then Lizard Man cannot harm you, this is 100% guaranteed. They are only $500 a piece, a true bargain.
I have already sold some of these magical stones to your neighbors living in the path of the eclipse, so if you want to protect yourself and your family please contact me immediately.

Can we just make sure Trump knows what a solar eclipse actually is so that he doesn't decide to nuke someone thinking that North Korea nuked the sun to attack America or something else equally as stupid.

You guys should get eclipse insurance.

No big deal. Based on that picture I think the best defense would be to just assemble the crude makings of gun powder, load it into some sort of locally occurring tube-like plant and then use a handful of diamonds that were lying on the ground as ammunition. When I lit that baby off it would injure the lizard man to such an extent as to eliminate the threat.

Anyway, that's what I'd go. I don't know about you.

Back in the 1979 eclipse, my older brother, who would have been about eight at the time, decided that the adults were being silly about the whole, "don't look at the eclipse" thing, so he snuck off and watched the whole thing with his bare naked eyes.  He says he was totally fine, at first, and remember thinking "this is awesome, I can't believe they didn't want me to look at this."  He says his eyes were fine until he finally looked away from the sun, and then everything went dark, and next thing he knew he was on the way to the doctors office, blind as a bat.  Eyesight came back on its own three or four days later.  My parents have confirmed this story, and thankfully CPS did care about stuff like that back then.

Burning out your retina can be 1) very painful, 2) permanent.

If he wasn't in agony after staring at the Sun he was lucky. Also, he might have a permanent blind spot for his trouble, in addition to the natural one that results from the optic nerve being over the retina instead of behind it.

Another one of God's great design flaws which are totally inexplicable because he made squid eyes only a day or two earlier without this flaw. Personally I blame outsourcing the Creation to contractors.

No word on ISO 12312-2 ? Any glasses should have this on them. I got some in bulk from eclipse2017.org, a site with lotsa info on this specific issue. I'm goin' to my niece's house in Crabtree, Oregon. I, of course, congratulated her on her choice of residence.

What's to prevent some disreputable (let's say, Chinese) manufacturer from selling crap glasses imprinted with "ISO 12312-2" on them?

I thought so.

By the time they're prosecuted , IF they're prosecuted at all, the damage is done.

I'm 100% confident that they're safe. I've just learned that a lot of people are getting the same email from Amazon for all filters. It must be Amazon trying to head off potential lawsuits.

Even top Baader film for cameras and telescopes aren't safe for viewing. You're wasting your time. Your camera won't cry out in pain and go blind.

Some eclipse viewing stuff including camera filters reviews here: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-solar-eclipse-glasses-and-filters/

I've been experimenting with my telescope with my dslr mounted where the eyepiece would usually go, trying to get the full manual exposure just right. Got an Orion safety film Solar filter, mounts at the top of the barrel, out of the way. Great for what few sunspots we've had lately too.

I'm just gonna see if holding the glasses in front of my DSLR lens will get a shot or two. It seemed to work OK during our heat wave last week, before the smoke got involved. Even after....kinda.

That can work; here's a multiple-exposure composite of the 2013 partial eclipse. Camera on my tripod, eclipse glasses held against the lens.
