On his weekend visit to South Korea, President Clinton warned that if North Korea developed and used an atomic weapon, "we would quickly and overwhelmingly retaliate."

That's a far cry from IF YOU GUYS SAY MEAN STUFF TO US WE'LL RAIN DOWN FIRE AND FURY THE LIKES OF WHICH THE WORLD HAS NEVER SEEN!11!!

A bit different from promising nuclear retaliation if NK merely "threatens" us, which is what Trump just did.

"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States," Trump told reporters from the clubhouse of his golf course in Bedminster, N.J., where he was being briefed separately on the opioid epidemic. "They will be met with fire and the fury like the world has never seen."

Trump added that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "has been very threatening beyond a normal state, and as I said, they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before."

Long as we're parsing everything to the Nth degree, where exactly does Trump promise nuclear retaliation?

I don't know...  The whole "...fire, fury and frankly power, likes of which this world has never seen before." part.

It is a drastic implication stating the obvious.
Most are aware of what conventional warfare can do, and there are plenty of people in the world that have seen it first hand.  What he is suggesting is something that hasn't been seen before which seems to imply a nuclear strike.  Many people interpreted his statement it that way.

Granted, people's opinions do change over time regarding what the right solution to a problem could be. Maybe we've learned something new about the situation. Maybe the situation has gotten worse. But for the most part we tend to be consistent. If you're looking for a group who condemns something under the other guy while praising it under theirs, you're looking on the wrong side of the aisle.

It's significantly less disturbing when a competent, grown-up president (in consultation with competent, gown-up advisors) makes a bellicose statement than when an incompetent four-year-old president (in consultation with no one competent) makes the same type of statement.
