It's a good thing Huffington Post is there to walk back the breathless mis-reporting of scientific information by mass media.

I like the taste of copper, but can't bring myself to put pennies in my mouth since watching that Upright Citizens' Brigade sketch...

There is such a thing as copper poisoning, and I've had it, and it's very unpleasant.
But you will never get it from one of these cups.

Drinking a Moscow Mule is nowhere near as dangerous as screwing a Moroccan donkey.

2017-08-11 10:33:53 AM
How many would you have to drink in order to get a toxic build-up? Seems like it would have to be repetitive and habitual consumption. Farkers might have a higher risk than the general population, but then, the chronic alcohol consumption might be the bigger issue.

...so, the walkback is "yes, the report's correct in everything but dose, and it's my belief that you will imbibe copper, but not enough to actually poison you, so you're fine?"

Yeah. Look, it's simple - mix, measure, and report. Don't tell me that your opinion somehow counters someone else's opinion - show me that your facts counter someone else's opinion. Data talks, opinions walk.

Show me how much copper is leached into an average drink from one of these untreated mugs. We're supposed to take in just 1-2 mg per day - if we're taking in more, tell us how much more. Don't say, "trust me, I'm a chemist - it's not enough to hurt you," say "I'm a chemist - given the acidity, volume, and surface area, you'd see approximately n mg to n mg dissolved into an average drink from one of these mugs per hour."

Heh. The article is meant to be an attack, I suspect, on the flood of cheap Indian and Chinese goods hitting Amazon on a regular basis. Right now, Amazon is drowning in copper mugs meant specifically for this drink, and most of them are coming from India and China, complete with a shiatload of disingenuous claims.

Further compounding the fun, many of those manufacturers are now replacing those mugs with steel-lined mugs or, worse, using the lacquer meant to protect the copper on the outside from tarnishing to coat the inside as well, and not changing their product descriptions or advertising.

That was my first thought -- apparently all-copper mugs can be found with effort, but all the MM cups I have encountered, the interior is at least nickel plated (not that nickel is entirely safe in this application).

Isn't the alcohol, I don't know, A KNOWN CARCINOGEN?

2017-08-11 11:09:26 AM
Assuming what you get is copper at all, mind you - a few manufacturers on Amazon are just committing fraud by selling steel mugs painted or plated with copper on the outside as "SOLID PURE COPPER UNLINED MUGS."

I've seen more than one bar (in several states) where a deposit is required if you want copper. Collectors or scrappers? Who knows...

I love drink trends.  Never heard of these things before they were on Better Call Saul.  Now you see copper mugs everywhere and everyone has ALWAYS loved them.  And I've been a bar patron/alcoholic for years.

Repeat news is repeat.

You'd have to ingest 40 pennies worth of copper (the entire penny isn't copper anymore) for this to matter.

Booze has weird marketing cycles. Vodak comes and goes, these got big as a way to sell the booze many years back and then made a return two years ago or so, premium vodka is on a big slide downhill, Tito's is king now as people realized $8 euro shots of clear booze is stupid. Whiskey I think peaked and Gin is on the up tick now. Aged gin is one of the most stupid things I've seen recently.

Dissolved copper gives scotch that nice, clean, mouth feel too. Stills have to be replaced every decade or so because they eventually wear right through from the redux reaction.

And yet fireball is the most consumed hard alcohol in America.

I've loved gin since my first sip about 15 years ago, and good single-malt scotch since my first dram about 20 years ago.

My favorite martini recipe:

Ingredients and supplies:
bottle of good gin from the freezer
bottle of vermouth
bottle of olives
Chilled martini glass

Directions:
Pass the closed bottle of vermouth over the top of the martini glass
Pass the closed bottle of olives over the top of the martini glass
Fill the martini glass with good gin
Drink

Blame Canada they make it!
Is it still the most consumed brand? Fireball isn't selling like it was a few years back when it peaked. Wholesalers and stores couldn't keep it in stock. I worked in a bar that was selling L's of the stuff every night at around $3-4 a shot. Insane. These days out drinking (which is often) I rarely see it ordered, I don't even think college students drink it anymore. Maybe that is regional though.
