Those high end shopping malls that are open air are doing quite well.

So from race cars to elderly mall-walkers?

I commend them. Everybody should learn to slow down.

Irwindale gets screwed on a sports deal?  I don't know how but I suspect Al Davis had something to do with this.

Don't forget Texas World.

It was Michigan with banking. Would have been a much more exciting track if it wasn't in the middle of nowhere and managed properly.

an aside, i watched a video up on nascar.com about Chevy going with a new Camaro body next year. The video shows it side-by-side with a few production Camaro models and.. they're really not doing themselves any favors.

Don't it always seem to go - that you don't know what you've got 'til it's gone?

I thought they lost this track a few years ago. Or was that another one?

Hmm malls or car racing, not sure which thing is going to die off first.

Both if Kellyanne doesn't stop taking the baby's toys away from him.

Yeah, these sorts of malls are mostly restaurants and movie theaters, frankly.

Admittedly, that closed 28 years ago.  Yes, it is now a mall (and restaurants and houses and all sorts of stuff).

They take racing track, put up a shopping mall.

Ooh an outdoor mall - all the better for intaking Irwindale's various manufacturing odors.

There's a definite major contraction, but it's not all Amazon, and not all malls will close.

The three factors that allow a place like this to still be built now are shifting populations, income inequality (high end does well in malls, low end not so much), and shifting preference to outdoor lifestyle.

/the one other factor not mentioned is shifting preference to premium outlet

Huh, I grew up right around the corner from there and got to spend opening night in the "luxury" box that belonged to the company I used to work for. Still have the program from that night and the parking pass. It was neat having racing back in town after the Irwindale drag strip and good old 605 Speedway (where we used to go watch my uncles and their friends race back in the day) closed down. When the big Top Fuel cars were in town, we could hear them laying in bed at night.

The best part about those days was getting to ride in the racecar when my uncle was going to put his on the trailer at the end of the night. Usually had to "get a run at it" and we'd come out onto the track between turns one and two, blast down the back straight, wind blowing through the car, kids hanging onto the roll cage like a bunch of monkeys screaming and yelling faster, FASTER! We'd go up over the hump into turn 3 never thinking we were going to make it, and then slow down out of 4 to pull into the pits and on the trailer. Being a kid in Southern California in the 70s was never better than that.
