I guess that no-one else cares, either...

2004-05-25 06:44:09 PM
Now who will all the patchouli (sp?) burning, birk sporting, ben and jerrys eating, unshaven, vw driving hippies follow and worship?

2004-05-25 06:44:37 PM
well, its not like they have played a whole bunch in the past 4 years, and all of the members have side projects. Kinda shiatty though since they were a very energetic band.

2004-05-25 06:46:15 PM
I got my ticket to convergence, their last festival ever. So far none of my friends have tickets yet, but I can't wait.

2004-05-25 06:47:25 PM
I think since their year-long "hiatus," Phish-heads everywhere have sort of known this was coming. Haven't personally listened to them much since my stony collegiate days, but a cool band, nonetheless, unfortunately linked forever in the collective unconscious with dirty, smelly hippies...

2004-05-25 06:47:44 PM
But Phish: The Ice Cream is staying together . . . right?

This just reinforces the well-tested mantra of bands everywhere:

The instant one of your members does something perceived as being motivated by pedophilia is the instant that things will continue to go downhill.

This is the end of an era... perhaps the last chance the ugly masses that inhabit this planet to listen to music that transcends the hateful truth of humanity live. Music that had no higher purpose than to entertain, to give its listeners at least an inkling of real happiness.

All good things must come to an end. 21 years of trying to teach us all that good music doesn't have to be political, or filled with hate, or even have a point, except to just be music.

2004-05-25 06:49:45 PM
... still on a high note? I thought they broke up 3 years ago!
/meh.
//on the other hand, lets all smoke a joint to, er, celebrate their musical accomplishments... right, musical accomplishments.
///wait, wait: "still on a high note", BWAAAHHAHAMAAHAHAHA... no shiat!

" got my ticket to convergence, their last festival ever"

You mean Coventry? If you don't even know the right name of the festival, save the tickets for actual fans of the band....

2004-05-25 06:50:22 PM
No, it's not the end of an era of any sort.

Stop waxing idiotic about this band going by the wayside.

I like Phish. Sue me.

And chechcal is right. There's always SCI. And Widespread Panic.

Now I remember what I don't like about most phans. Phish is theirs and not to be shared with anybody else. "I was a fan since '91, you're just some poseur." Having a brain fart makes me not a real fan??? Grow up.

Sweet!
No more crappy music!
Maybe the wierd people will disappear too!

Trustafarians surrender

2004-05-25 06:56:33 PM
Far be it from me to criticize anyone on Fark who posts without knowing very much about the subject at hand. As someone who has been to 20+ Phish shows over the years, I thought I would contribute my .02.

Anyway, the Trustafarian stereotype is righteous fun, but not really representative of the scene. Most fans are like me, people who pay their own way (to the shows and in life) and work for a living. I'm a lawyer. Not a bum, not a leech, not a smelly hippie wannabe. The music is what it is. Some say it sucks... fine. Opinions don't get changed on Fark, I know that. Three of those guys have chops that most serious musicians would kill their own mothers for.

Also, those shows are some of the best parties I have ever been to. Soaking up sun, booze, tunes and whatever else you might want, if not need. Now I have to scramble to see one more show. Are these guys done forever? I think most people who follow rock and roll know nothing is forever. But this will be their last shows as Phish. In the future they will be the guys who used to be Phish. Bummer.

Nevertheless, got to get my mind right for one last journey into the breach! Can't wait. Mahalo, boys.

You just described most nonmainstream music fans.

Brandon Boyd?

Sad day for me, really sad. Brooklyn and SPAC will be my last shows, 44 in total, most of them over the last two years. I feel fortunate for having so many good nights, good times, and good friends at these shows. It's sad that more people will never get a chance to go, a good deal of them turned off on what we as fans of the band are like, it's a shame that a very small portion of the band's fanbase gives the rest of us bad names as irresponsible, drug addicted, smelly, nomdic hippies. Most of us have jobs and live stable, normal lives. Streotypes aside, I hope all of you that are going to these last 13 shows will make the most out of them, and have more fun than you have ever had before or will again.

2004-05-25 07:00:24 PM
Cya in Coventry!

2004-05-25 07:00:31 PM
Note to Phish fans:

They were a decent jam band. THEY WERE NOT THE GRATEFUL DEAD. THEY WEREN'T EVEN FARKING CLOSE.

Go get a live Dead CD and compare it to Phish. Phish blow. I'm not a die-hard Dead fan either. They were just light years beyond Phish, even 20 years ago.

2004-05-25 07:00:42 PM
I haven't listened to them in years, but used to be absolutely fanatical. Sorry to see them go.

Eh, it hasn't been the same since they had to stop doing the "Big Ball Jam" and use mics for the a capella stuff because the venues got too big.

2004-05-25 07:02:17 PM
$50 on all the hippies not even noticing

Hmm... Hippy caravans need a new touring band to follow. The members of The Flaming Lips must be salivating at the prospect.

Notice to hippies: The Blue Oyster Cult has never stopped touring. Literally. They pretty much live on the road year-in, year-out full time these days. They do a lot of long jams, and play in a lot of small venues and biker-bars these days.

If you can put up with assholes like me shouting for "more cowbell!!!" through the whole show, it could be just the scene you're looking for.

Who cares? "The Grateful Dead are better than Phish, so you can't like Phish." ??

Mryna, don't lump Panic with those SCI freaks. A ride on the fark Truck ain't the same as that hippy-ass hoola-hoopin' cheese crap.

2004-05-25 07:05:33 PM
I hope it's not true for all of them, but I have never met a Phish fan who wasn't an asshole.

As for the band, they always struck me as an untalented grateful dead knockoff. I won't miss them.

THEY WERE NOT THE GRATEFUL DEAD. THEY WEREN'T EVEN FARKING CLOSE.

And the Grateful Dead were not the Grateful Dead by '95.

I saw 36 Dead shows, 42 Phish shows. The Dead were on maybe 33% of the time by the time I got to seeing them. Phish delivered closer to about 90%. That's an accomplishment when so much of the music is improvised.

Now, if you want to compare Dead at Buffalo '75 versus Phish at Deer Creek '97, (both bands at their peak) then you have a point.

2004-05-25 07:06:26 PM
That's phucked up.

2004-05-25 07:06:54 PM
Thank you, jonastank, for COMPLETELY missing the entire point.

Hint: Phish (and most of their fans) don't really care if they're any good compared to the Dead or anyone else. They're just fun.

2004-05-25 07:07:44 PM
First I find out my boyfriend's probably moving away in a couple weeks. Now I find out Phish is breaking up. And I have PMS. This day just sucks! I'll never get to see Phish with my brother again! I know I'm more upset than I should be, but damn it, I'm just gonna cry now.

"A ride on the fark Truck ain't the same as that hippy-ass hoola-hoopin' cheese crap."

It's too bad there's no WSP 'til '04 :(
