(ESPN)   Everybody should root for an Astros-Dodgers World Series, because the Astros' offense is ridiculously awesome and the Dodgers' pitching is equally insane   ( espn.com) divider line

Absolutely hot garbage. They may still make the playoffs, but they won't get out of the first round.

I'm hoping the Dodgers have an epic collapse but I doubt it.  Go Rockies and so forth.

There's no dispute as to whether or not the Astros will make the playoffs. They will.  Getting out of the first round is a crapshoot, just like any other playoff team in baseball.  It's a nutty sport.  Dodgers and Astros can be super dominant in the regular season, doesn't matter.

The 'stros' pitching has taken a nosedive, and the injury bug is starting to take its toll on the club. There's lots of confusion and resentment at Jeff Luhnow for not executing a trade for a pitcher before the past deadline. At worst, I can see them winning the division and losing their first playoff series. At best, a shot at the pennant before losing (not sure against whom).

The scary thing about the Dodgers is that the team is crafty and adaptable enough that even a relatively bad night of pitching doesn't necessarily spell doom for them. That approach - coupled with the big-ass payroll - is turning out well for them.

Crafty doesn't mean shiat.  They've been lucky in a few games and have won 5 more 1 run games than they should.  It's my team, I'd love for the Doyers to win it all....but regular season means nothing in baseball (beyond getting to the playoffs).

It's weird.  I've come to completely root against the Dodgers simply because of when they were kind of the NL rival of the Phillies back in '08/'09 (in the playoffs at least).  Even though Matt Stairs and Jimmy Rollins completely ripped their hearts out back then, and the teams' fortunes have kind of reversed, I still hate that damn team.  Even if Utley is on the roster.

I was at both of the games at Coors Field where the Rockies blew it and the Phillies won that series in 2009...rain,  barely above freezing temperature and two losses within 24 hours.  That was a long train ride home.

The Dodgers' hitting is definitely better than the Astros' pitching, that's for sure.  But that wasn't the premise of the article.

i'd prefer to root for teams that i actually like or am at least neutral towards.  neither the dodgers nor the astros fall into either of those two groups

Kluber/Carrasco/Salazar
Sale/Price/Porcello
Scherzer/Strasburg/Gonzalez
Arrieta/Quintana/Lester
Kershaw/Darvish/Wood

Keuchel/McCullers/Morton/Fiers/McHugh pick any 3

Those aren't in any order, but you line up HOU vs those and you're the worst or 2nd worst playoff rotation of the division leaders. That's tough in postseason. They should have traded for (and still might) Verlander.

Fine, drop Kershaw and his $33 million a year and the Dodgers still have the best pitching staff in the big leagues.  They are up there on offense too, and many of their position players are pretty low salary (either because they are rookies or close to it or mediocre performers in the past who have hit stride this year).

Would you prefer the Cubs and their exploitation of rookie contracts? I love the Cubs, but they're straight up shafting players like Bryant, Schwarber, and Contreras.

Contreras and Schwarber started this season with less than 150 games played. Combined. Schwarber got a $3.125 million signing bonus. Bryant signed the highest contract ever for a pre-arbitration player.

Don't be so sure of the Astros' downfall just yet.  In August 2015 the Royals pitching was hot garbage and Johnny Cueto (emergency hired gun) stunk and didn't really play a decent game until he faced the Mets in the WS.
