anyone else unnerved that all of Trump's Top Men, if not family, are retired military?

Kelly has a distinguished career of leading Marines. Men and women of integrity, who have had the principles of God, Country, Corps drilled into them.

Now he "expects" the Trump underlings to live by the same principles. Good luck.

Getting a grip on the White House staff is one thing. Politicking with Congress is another entirely.

I am really torn on this one. On the one hand, we're all in desperate need of some amount of competence. On the other, I can't help but feel that no amount can right that ship, so the less competence there is the faster it goes down. What to wish for, what to wish for...

daphne: anyone else unnerved that all of Trump's Top Men, if not family, are retired military?

I should be, but I'm not. If it was anyone else's admin I'd be worried about it, but with these guys? Not so much. Objectively, the military influence is only raising things to the level of basic competence. Mattis, Kelly, etc. only look as good as they do compared to the rest of the admin.

Yeah, good point.  I am just not sure if I want former military shaping domestic policy.  I hope these men take the time to straighten up shop then graciously step down to hire experienced legislators in their place.  I can dream, I guess

Echoing the Marines' credo of "God, Country, Corps," Kelly said he expects all of them to put country first, the president second, and their own needs and priorities last.

Glad you feel that way General, because what's best for the country is NOT having a Russian puppet in charge of things.

I think McMaster, Kelly and Mattis are all intelligent, competent and sane people. They'll keep the potential dangers of a Trump presidency to a minimum. Unfortunately, as they stabilize this administration, we'll all start to suffer under conservative policies, so it's definitely a trade-off.

LOLnope. Trump will get tired of the ''America First'' position and fire him for someone who will kiss his ass first and foremost again

Also, they have the ability to destroy the country from within and cannot be stopped from outside the gvt.

Doesn't really mean much and if it did it would be probably be a bigger problem for Trump than anyone else.

Military officers are at least trained in honor, organization, and management. If any given one has forgotten that then it doesn't make much difference. If they haven't forgotten then they are more likely to not go along with Trump's more corrupt inclinations.

Or they're someone who believes that they can perform damage control.

In this case it's about as useful as  throwing a bucket of water into the containment dome while a thousand tons of blazingly radioactive lava from the melted core eats its way through the floor, but uh... thanks for trying.

/fark every one of you trumpers for deliberately causing this meltdown

If he' smart he'll do it piecemeal. Good example is when I moved in w/husband I incrementally made some changes to make the home pleasant for me while respecting his space as well.

I don't think they have the time or energy, they have to spend all of it keeping the children in line. Again, if it was any other admin I'd be concerned, but any other admin wouldn't need the CoS to tell them them they work for the people, not the president.

I'll echo the above sentiment: I hope can can get the White House to put country first.
Otherwise I'll echo my own sentiment:  to date, Trump's most positive trait has been his incompetence.  Don't ruin that.

Anybody think Kelly will make it to labor day?

2017-08-06 03:26:13 PM
Kelly said he expects all of them to put country first, the president second, and their own needs and priorities last.

Now, if this is going to work like I think it sometimes works in the military, who is going to be the example that makes the rest of the unit catch their breath, put down their porn and start putting their thumbs on the seams where they belong?

Ok fernt.  What I meant to say is he should do it progressively so as not to either startle POTUS, his supporters or the myriad of factions w/i the administration

It helps to keep reminding yourself to look at the members of this admin objectively and not just in the context of this admin. Yes, Kelly seems like a pretty major influence, but look at what he's actually doing: if he accomplishes this goal, he's brought the admin up to the bare minimum standard for civil servants. Not exactly a major step toward a military coup. You're stress level goes way down when you remember that this admin's major accomplishments would be barely newsworthy for one that was even halfway competent.

2017-08-06 03:37:36 PM
Country first, eh?  Expect more leaks than ever because that is what is best for the country under this administration.

That's all well and good, except for the fact that the military is chock-full of all the white supremacists who were too smart to be cops.  They're going to be perfectly happy to go along with Hair Trumpenfürher as long as he keeps being a xenophobic, racist shiatbag.

"Witnesses to the slaying of 24 Iraqi civilians by U.S. Marines in the western town of Haditha say the Americans shot men, women and children at close range in retaliation for the death of a Marine lance corporal in a roadside bombing."

"Aws Fahmi, a Haditha resident who said he watched and listened from his home as Marines went from house to house killing members of three families, recalled hearing his neighbor across the street, Younis Salim Khafif, plead in English for his life and the lives of his family members. 'I heard Younis speaking to the Americans, saying: 'I am a friend. I am good,' ' Fahmi said. 'But they killed him, and his wife and daughters.' "

I would be if there was a competent person within throwing distance of the White House. With the feckless morons in there now, I don't think there is much consequence to it. My only complaint about putting lifelong military members in high ranking offices is that they typically only know one thing, and that's war.
