What about all that waste, fraud, and abuse?

I was told that if you cut the waste, fraud, and abuse, you could shrink government by like a third, so why don't we just cut those bits?

Well, if they fail to raise it, then they can't blame the consequences for their inaction on the black guy.

Here's what I think Pelosi and Schumer should do. Put every member of their caucus in order from 1-194 (for the House) and 1-48 (for the Senate). I'd use odds of being re-elected in their next cycle to rank them in reverse order. Go to Ryan and McConnell and tell them the Democrats will deliver whatever number of votes are necessary to pass a CLEAN debt ceiling increase, but for whatever number beyond the minimum the Republicans need (0 in the House and 8 in the Senate), the debt ceiling must be lifted either by another $100 million or extended by another month. And if there are ANY riders on the debt ceiling increase, the entire caucus will vote present and leave it up to the Republicans.

Some Senate Democrats have floated seeking a reauthorization of health insurance programs for low-income children in return for their support

This is hard. On the one hand, I like my Government to be up and running. On the other hand I want chickens to come home and roost on their faces. They lied to their voters to the point that they were willing to elect the worst sort of human garbage to the White House.

OH! Deficits don't matter now....

You mean their donors' life support? These are career politicians, they're crazy and stupid at times, but not THIS crazy and stupid. You might as well wonder about suggesting the IRS steps up prosecution of tax cheats and closing loopholes to increase revenue...

Dear lord I wish. I remember reading somewhere that for every $1 invested in the IRS, they get $10 in revenue because they can actually go after tax dodgers.

Ah, Here it is.

For every $1 invested in "Prevent Identity Theft and Refund Fraud" there's a $9 ROI.
For "Improve Audit Coverage of Large Partnerships" it's $2.70
For "Enhance Collection Coverage" it's $2.8

Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan are planning to push for a hike without accompanying spending cuts - a position at odds with GOP orthodoxy.

It's only at odds with GOP orthodoxy when they don't control the government. When they do, they don't give a sh*t about debt.

farking waste, fraud, and abuse.  Stupidest nothing phrase ever.  I've worked in healthcare for years, and that is the dumbest, most 'eye of the beholder 'nonsense I've encountered.

$100M would run the US government for like 6 hours.  I think they can aim a little higher than that.

No, he's right.  If you pass a bill that will raise the debt (ie, a spending bill), there should also be a corresponding provision to raise the debt ceiling.

You know, I was originally thinking that it'd add up to a sizeable sum. It's only about $25 billion with every Democrat being required. You're right. That figure should be at least $10 billion a piece. That would up it by another $2.5 trillion.

Raising the debt ceiling is not optional. you do it or the country ends up in a world of hurt financially.   period.

Right now investors are PAYING the United States to lend it money (t-bills have a negative yeild adjusted for inflation).   Fail to raise the debt ceiling, let our credit rating get downgraded, and the money we borrow gets a LOT more expensive

I don't believe we've had a negative daily treasury real yield curve for awhile now. Those interest rates are absurdly low however. And you are absolutely right that not raising the debt ceiling would make the interest rates we pay for borrowing money dwarf what Greece was paying years ago during their doldrums.
