In a terrifying article, this is the scariest paragraph:
Rauner, who faces re-election in 2018 in a heavily-Democratic state, recently reshuffled the governor's office and has hired aides from a conservative think tank who have been waging political combat with Democrats.

Same reasons we have Trump.  People think rich=successful.  Plus the logic that says we should run a goverment like a business.  So we might as well let the millionaires run the place.

Yup. There have been crooked politicians who get the job done. I've lived in Chicago, NYC, New Orleans, Cleveland and many more. All those places are known for severe corruption. But something got done at times. It's a shame, as they opened doors to uber-crooks like Donny Two Scoops, but some got things accomplished.

1) "Off" year elections for governor - 2014, 2018, etc. where turnout is lower for a non-pres. election.

2) Prior Democratic governor's farkups (Blagojevich, Quinn - although he was more of a victim of the former).

3) Illinois isn't so much a liberal state as a Democratic president voting one - other positions are up for grabs (senator, governor). IL's politics are what Indiana's are if Indianapolis grew 6 times larger.

4) Illinois Republicans typically aren't the small town bumpkins from Effingham, Marion, and Cairo - they're from the Chicago burbs and are careful enough not to piss off the entire Chicago region like national Republicans do. As a result, in these elections, Chicago votes a little more red than a pres election, the surrounding counties go even more red, and central/southern IL vote the same - a "Chicago" Republican is still a Republican in a two person race.

Given that he's up for reelection in 2018, maybe the governor being elected in non-Presidential years has something to do with it.

Much like trump won.  People are stupid, and think rich=good.  Rauner sucked Caterpillar dick. Quinn was milquetoast at best. On the backside of Blago's debacle.  And "heavily democratic" is not correct.  Chicago is heavily democratic.  The rest of the state is so farking red that Alabama wants to adopt us.

I'm really amazed that Rauner isn't facing any serious primary challenger. The defections on the budget bill show that at least some Republicans don't think what he's doing is working.

Trump was ready to send in the military to deal with "those people" in Chicago. Here's guessing he will turn a blind eye to the riots that ensue from this except to blame the Democrats.

At least, until a window gets broken at his Trump building downtown. Then he will have everything from Six Flags to Gary, IN bombed into dust out of spite.

/Would be an improvement for Gary

We've now created a country where billionaires run/buy public office to exact a greater measure
of revenge on perceived enemies than in the public sector. The Founding Fathers would be horrified.

Robert Mercer, billionaire, just received an IRS bill for $7 billion dollars. :)

That little bit of folk tale is a great example of stated preferences vs revealed preferences.

The wealthy often live in high tax states, and they generally don't move much because of taxes going up and down - even if they say they will when you poll them. That's because the place people choose to live involves a whole host of factors - many of which are paid for by those taxes. The rich have an even greater ability to pay those taxes, so things like infrastructure, schools, proximity to other rich people, intangible things such as beautiful views, and other various factors generally matter more.

Rauner's attitude is clearly that if something is not worth doing, it's not worth paying for.

It's just as clear that he believes that education is wasted on Those People and taxpayer money is wasted on those daft enough to waste their time trying to educate them.
