Just what I was thinking.  Isn't that where Kurt Warner made the transition from?

Flacco will be back for the season so no need to hire Kaep to be a practice dummy and Kaep would probably request more than league min.  And this gives the team a chance to look at a somewhat unknown.

It's not so much as the NFL being afraid of or wanting to punish Kaepernik specifically, it's a big picture warning shot to everyone else that they had better keep their mouths shut if they know what's good for them

I didn't mean that quite the way it probably came off. I didn't mean to imply that Kaepernick had no tricks.

I'm not exactly a fan, but he's clearly better than a number of projected starters in the league. As a Ravens fan, I wouldn't have any problem with Kaepernick if Flacco was going to be out for the season. Since that isn't supposed to be the case bringing in this guy to eat up snaps in the preseason seems like the right move.

This, pretty much. People aren't going to pay starter money for a temporary backup, especially when the real starter will most likely be back come September. This is a low risk move, no need to bring Kaep's politics into it.

Flag worship is jingoist bullshiat to start.  Kaepernick is not a great pocket QB obviously but, he's better than the 65th (or whatever number end on rosters) QB available.

I'm sure Kaepernick demanding too much money for the job he wasn't offered is the problem here.

If Flacco is really out for only a week I was surprised they would bother but then I saw they only were carrying 2 back ups, so if you want to run enough drills you need a warm body out there.

I was willing to believe this up until about a month ago, I went to Jets training camp, and Todd Bowles was screaming that they were going to have to cancel the season if they could not find a man who could throw a football.

Just happened that Colin Kaepernick was there, guy gets up, and starts screaming to "Put me in, coach!  I'll work really hard!"  You could tell he was like a kid in a candy store, just enjoyed the game of football so, so much.  But you could also see the look on Todd Bowles' face, the man was just desperately trying to pretend that Colin did not exist.

Eventually though, it just gets to the point that Bowles loses his cool and says, "Hey you!  Go put on a uniform!", while pointing right at me.  I thought it was a little bit weird, since I had not thrown a football in about seven or eight years, but you could tell he wanted Kaepernick to shut up, and also, it was the Jets.

But yeah, I get on the field, and let's just say that according to ESPN, I was the first person to record a "negative interception", whatever the hell that is.  Then later in that segment, they cut to "Billy from Alabama", to get his hot-take opinion on Colin Kaepernick.  He proceeded to light a cross on fire and warn that Colin's day of reckoning has come.

Really shows you how passionate NFL fans are about their league.  Good on them.

There is a certain local pride in that song.  The "flag that was still there" stayed up 3 miles from the Ravens' stadium.  How that effects locals still peeved about Freddie Gray's execution for loitering is an unknown question.

Counter point to the whole racism angle.  Tebow.  Not starting qb good, but better than some in the league, but not worth the circus.

Like who? He's pretty bad and wants too much money. No team is going to sign a guy for $10-$12 million to be a backup.

The league is filled with bad quarterbacks. I agree that no one is going to sign a backup for $10-12M, and no team with a questionable starter is going to bring in an unpopular and flawed quarterback on top of the flawed quarterbacks they already have. So, I'm not surprised that no team has signed Kaepernick. I do think the Ravens would have probably signed him if Flacco's injury was serious.

That said, Kaepernick's QBR last season ranked 23rd among qualified starters (30), his quarterback rating was 17th even if San Francisco was terrible. As for the projected starters that he's better than:
Rams: Projected starter: Jared Goff (unless he makes some huge strides)
Jets Projected starter: Josh McCown
Browns: Cody Kessler/Brock Oswieler
Texans: Tom Savage/DeShaun Watson
Bears: Mike Glennon/Mitch Trubisky
49ers: Brian Hoyer

I actually like most of those guys, but it won't matter who is the starter for the Browns, 49ers, Bears, Jets and Rams - those teams won't win a lot of games. Glennon, Hoyer, Savage and Kessler have some talent and have put up decent numbers for a season or parts of a season. I don't know how if there's a good way to format the stats here so I'll just put career QB Rating up for each of them. Goff and Kessler were rookies last year.

Kaepernick: 88.9 (90.7 last year)
Hoyer: 84.8
McCown: 78.2
Kessler: 92.3
Savage: 74.9
Glennon: 84.6
Goff: 63.6

There's several more that you can make a pretty good case that Kaepernick is either better than or basically on par with.

Kurt Warner was a starter and played in the ArenaBowl twice.

This guy...sh*t, I follow Pac-12 football AND the AFL, and I've never heard of him.

Oh, wait, now that I look more into it...it's a QB from two levels BELOW the AFL.

I went to a CIF game last year. To give you an idea about the level of professionalism, at halftime, a dog sh*t on the field during their show and, in the same halftime, a dude oil-wrestled two midgets (also dudes) at midfield (they were wearing clothes).

And the QB they just signed was the third-best QB on his 4-8 team in the CIF.

The #1 thing head coaches in the NFL do not like are distractions. Why would you want that media circus for you backup QB. It is the SAME reason that Tebow is out of a job.

True, but he got 6 years of playing time on film and had a contract with the 49ers that he declined an option on.
