(KPTV Portland)   Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was given $100,000 check from Trump at today's White House press briefing. Plot twist it was donated to Dept of Ed not for giving Putin a hand job   ( kptv.com) divider line

Does the White House really need that much Amway products?

This is the sort of public display of largess that kings used to do. A president is a public servant and that salary is the symbol of his employment by the public and even if he doesn't need the money the symbolism matters. If Trump really wants to see money go to a particular department he does have the ability to do something about it in a way that matters since $100k doesn't go all that far in the grand scheme of things.

Y'know what would help the Department of Education more than a $100K donation?  Not cutting its budget by $9,200,00,000.

He's not donating it to the Dept. of Education. He's giving it to Devos and Ivanka. They claim to be putting on a "summer camp" for potential STEM kids. Am I just being cynical here or is this just another grift? I swear, it's all he knows how to do. I hope to see a follow up story on how this "camp" plays out and if there is any opportunity for personal gain on the part of Ivanka and Devos.

You are being cynical in that there is nothing that Ivanka nor Devos can do with 100K that's going to directly generate any kind of financial gain worth more than spit in a bucket.  To both of them, 100K is like that corroding penny in your cars cup-holder, that is permanently glued there by years of caked up sticky soda spills.

You are not cynical in thinking that 100K spent on the Federal level will do anything for education.  It won't.  The cost to merely have the conference/photo op for the giving of the check likely cost taxpayers in excess of 100K.

You are also not cynical in thinking that this is more about personal-gain than anything.  Gain doesn't have to be directly financial.  The gain for Trump is, another portion of the news-cycle hijacked, about him, and positive.  I tried to google whether you could even donate to the department of education, and I believe you can as I was just looking for a cite, and the first 3 pages were only about this.

This was a photo/PR/Campaign op, nothing more.

Why do I get the sneaking suspicious that this camp will be located on a Trump owned property, and that the bill will come out to somewhat more than $100,000?

I get that that amount of money is chump change to them but I wouldn't be surprised if they reflexively grift at every possible opportunity, just like I pick up change on the sidewalk when I see it. And like was mentioned upthread, they may be required to say at Trump properties or some similar nonsense. All sorts of ways to grift here.

If we are very, very lucky - luckier than any of us have any right to expect, then in a hundred years enough impact will be eroded away that our great-grandchildren's history books just read "And then after the first black President, the first orange President was elected. who then caused the Trumppot Dome scandal".

Chump change isn't an idea that crosses their mind.

Money is there for the taking, doesn't matter if it's a dime or a grand, and they'll run you over to get it.

Money is like a farking score to these people. They just run, run, run it up. More money than they could spend in ten lifetimes, but it's the score that matters.

A dollar someone else has is a dollar they don't. And they won't stand for that.

Ahhh, so like the wealthy klepto that steals things like lip balm and cheap "diamondium" earrings from Walmart.

More likely though, they know that the indirect gains are worth far more than the direct ones.  Something like a government Department requiring stays at Trump properties won't really happen.  The indirect gains are the ones you can't really hold against Trump legally, any more than you can blame the Clintons for Chinese money donated to their foundation.

Reasons to follow:

1.  People will spend money to "feel closer" to a celebrity.  They'll go to "Bob's Hardware Store" just because Bob sponsors their favorite NASCAR driver.  In general, they'll use products because of a celebrity endorses it.  Weight Watchers saw their revenue (and stock price) get dramatic gains when Oprah started endorsing it.  Oprah probably would have done this for free, because she has multiple millions in stock.

2.  People will spend money, if they THINK it improves their standing.  A person writing a politician may enclose a donation, because they think it improves the standing of their request, even though it shouldn't.  People buy things from PCH and other sweepstakes, even though entries do not require purchase, because they think it increases their chance of winning, even though it is illegal for it to affect their chances at all.

3.  People will spend money even with intent to make a bribe "all legal like" (it's a little different than #2, as in this case they are actually attempting a nudge-nudge-wink-wink bribe).  e.g.  Foreign companies/governments donating to the Clinton Foundation.

4. People will spend money, specifically to give someone they support more money when they are pleased.  Like a performance bonus that they can't pay directly.  Ex:  Trumpian fanatics figuring that Trump deserves more money in his personal pocket.  You could probably ask them if they had the option when sending money to either earmark it directly for the campaign OR directly in Trump's pay, a lot would do the latter.

My overall point being, if Trump wants money, he's going to get the money, without doing illegal stuff like coercing people to stay at his properties.
