(The Hill)   The President personally interviewed Jessie Liu, his nominee to be U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, the person who would likely oversee any prosecutions arising from Mueller's investigations. This not just unusual, it is Just Not Done   ( thehill.com) divider line

He probably Googled her name and saw this, and immediately called her in.

And then kicked her out after a few minutes when the actual attorney Jessie Liu showed up.

Doubtful. She's not blonde, and not even from a former Soviet country, so I doubt he would've been interested at all.

No one has asked me to commit that I will be loyal to the President or the Attorney General, and I have not made such a commitment," Liu continued.

She just had to prick her finger and sign a contract in blood.....

I think the U.S. attorneys should be moved to "nonpartisan" 5 or 10 year terms like the FBI director.  They are too important to be patronage jobs.

Liu was on Trump's transition team, so she already sold her soul prior to this appointment.

And if the Bush administration (remember that quaint little scandal involving US Attorneys?) and the current shiatshow have proven anything is that relying on norms--even firmly established ones like "US Attorneys are independent and apolitical"--no longer works.

But Donald Verrilli, former U.S. solicitor general under President Obama, told CNN that the meeting isn't concerning.

"Based on my time at DOJ and White House Counsel's Office, it doesn't strike me as especially unusual to have a brief meeting (assuming that's what happened here) with the President for candidates for the leading US attorney positions," Verrilli said.

Hmm One guy says it is okay, "assuming ti was a brief meeting" which is not what what was reported, and meanwhile everybody else disagrees:

A number of former Justice Department and White House sources told CNN the rare meeting is at odds with the custom of guarding U.S. attorneys from political influence, especially considering she would be the leading the largest federal prosecutor's office in the country.
"It's wrong, and the reason it's wrong is that it serves to undermine the rule of law," former U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Alabama Joyce Vance told CNN. "This goes to the independence of the Justice Department" and "any effort by any president to diminish that is problematic."

Hasn't the president always been responsible for nominating US Attorneys? If so and an interview is not common, then historically, how have the nominees been selected?

I'm assuming by resume and reputation.  I seriously doubt any of them have served on the President's transition team, though I could be wrong.

If that's the case, then if the Trumpistan case comes before her, she has to recuse. Okay, well, she should but won't, which would lead to an appeal.

good lord, this is getting to be so convoluted.

Yeah.  A few people on Muellers' team donated paltry sums to Dems over the years, so the whole team is clearly biased and should be fired, but a member of Trumps' own transition team is perfectly fine to be the one deciding whether or not to prosecute him. Could the hypocrisy get any more obvious?

He genuinely believes--and will never be convinced otherwise--that the US government is his property to do with as he pleases.

And he's stunned that there are people who disagree with this.

Yes.  In fact, given Trump's track record, I'm sure it'll get even more obvious before your workday is up.  And before your weekend is over.  And again next week a few times, etc.

2017-07-21 01:32:56 PM
Subby, Mueller has the power to bring prosecutions himself, and unquestionably would. The thing with Liu is somewhat concerning, though pending further detail, not a giant outrage. It's perfectly normal for the President to meet with potential nominees to any office- the issue is that officials at that level don't usually rate the President's time, but the President's time is mostly spent watching TV right now, so whatev. She won't have any role in Russia related prosecutions unless Mueller decides that he wants her to have a role. Also, the Grand Jury already dealing with this stuff, which Mueller has reportedly taken over, is in the Eastern District of Virginia, so many of these things would be dealt with out of that office (headed by Dana Boente, who was the person who Trump chose to replace Yates as acting AG, so some questions there).

The decay and ultimate destriction of civil society, virtue and government begin with the violation of norms of governance. Small violations at first, then of progressively more grevious fashion, until finally someone realizes that obeying the law is itself just another norm.
