I can't deny that it's a good movie.

But...it's SO bleak, in that uniquely soul-crushing "It's the 80s and we're all going to die in a nuclear war" kind of way. Yes, it's a satire, and it's even funny. But MAN. I just can't watch it again. Maybe it's different and less terrifying if you didn't grow up in that period.

It is a shame that movie never had an sequels or reboots.  Yep, total shame.

The reboot may be the worst remake of the last 15 years. And I say that even though I saw Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka abomination.

You may be right.  The only one I can think of that may be worse is the Nicholas Cage version of "The Wicker Man", but that at least gave us some comedy gold.

You really don't see violence like that in even today's movies. Like the guy who gets blown away by the ED 209, or acid-melted flesh guy getting plastered all over a car's windshield.

Let me save you some time from reading that long piece on why the franchise went downhill after the first movie: Paul Verhoeven is a genius.

The second movie had some good ideas, but was too...silly, I suppose the term should be.

The third movie was ass.

The remake was rancid ass.

Frank Miller's Robocop is one of the worst-illustrated comic books I have ever seen.

Robocop vs. Terminator deserves a decent animated shot.

I keep trying to watch that with the commentary track but I can't make it through.  Not that it's bad, it's just Ahnold is so enthusiastic about what's happening in the movie he makes me want to shut him up so I can focus on what's happening in the movie.

Same for Starship Troopers. Great movie, the sequels are total shiat. They're still milking it to this day.

The cartoon is supposed to be quite good.  i've only seen a few minutes of it myself, but I've heard good things from people whose opinions I trust that the entire series good.

Which only goes to show that the universe is not incompatible with additional good stories, but the people making the later movies either aren't trying or aren't competent.

The RoboCop reboot wasn't THAT bad. It was an ok movie. I mean, it looks worse when compared to the original, but it's also trying to be a different movie.

Clutch2013: The third movie was ass.

The remake was rancid ass.

So you're implying the Third movie was better than the reboot? Are you on crack? The Third movie was GAWD Awful. Typical reaction to RoboCop 3:

The third one (second sequel) was watchable, maybe even good in a totally absurdist way.

Agreed.  The remake held my attention.  I liked it better than Robocop 2.  I've never been able to watch all of Robocop 3.

Robocop 3 was trying to be a pilot for a TV series. That's why it sucked.

That looks like something out of "Robot Chicken"

/ not to disparage "Robot Chicken" of course, I just can't watch that stop-motion stuff and not chuckle...

It was a pretty uninspired generic action movie that was just hoping the reputation for the original would push it over the finish line. Or to put it another way, it was Hollywood at its laziest.

You could argue the best scene in the movie was actually the one where two guys have a conversation in a bathroom. So. Much. Tension.

2017-07-17 06:15:11 PM
Huh, so now I've learned I despise everything Frank Miller touches.  I didn't know he ruined both Batman AND RoboCop.

First movie was a high tech hoot with gravitas.  Second movie was so dull and pointlessly ultraviolet that I think we left the theater in disgust.

How can someone direct the best sci-fi sequel of all time and the worst sci-fi sequel of all time?

2017-07-17 08:55:17 PM
I was 16 when Robocop came out.  For some reason I had no desire to see it, even though I've always been a huge sci-fi (or whatever Robocop is) fan.  You'd think it'd be right in my wheelhouse.  But, nope.

Around a week or so after it opened I was cleaning the garage with my dad.  He had some radio show on and Robocop came up.  One of the panelists had gone full 'think of the children!' in regards to the graphic violence.  They played the audio from the ED-209 malfunction scene and talked about how you could see the body being riddled with bullets and nobody should see the movie..

I called my best friend right away.  We saw it that night.  I've loved it ever since.

So 'thanks' to the pearl clutcher, or to the underground marketing.  Either way, I saw the movie.  :-)

A good friend of mine works in Dallas City Hall.  Yes there's a reason I mentioned that. (It really is an ugly building in an oasis of concrete)
