THEY WARNED US

In all seriousness, admirable restraint from the Daily Express on this one, I have to say. They only made the mildest and most restrained of hints towards the nightmarish gynopocalypse the Time Lady portends. I was expecting way, way, way more "FURY AS BRITAIN DEMANDS TO KNOW WHEN PC MEDDLING WILL END; CALLS GROW TO HONOUR MEMORY OF DIANA BY LEAVING EU IMMEDIATELY" -style hammering.

Good on the useless bastards.

Why not? Axel Foley wasn't written as a specific race.  Stallone and Mickey Rourke both turned it down before Murphy got the offer.

If they could change out Stallone for Murphy, then Axel wasn't really written at all.

No, Beverly Hills Cop was originally a straightforward action flick. When Eddie Murphy was cast, he helped write the jokes.

Stallone' rejected rewrite of the Beverly Hills Cop script ended up becoming the template for Cobra. The Cobra poster in Reinhold's apartment in part 2 was an inside joke on that.

Meh.  We already had the most kick-ass female action hero back in the 1980s.  Her name is Lt. Ellen Ripley.  We also had Sarah Conner.

Develop new female characters with this own stories, don't saddle them with the baggage of 50+ year old traditionally male franchises.

Well you can't have a female James Bond because that's his real name, however 007 is just a code giving to him by MI6 so you could have a female 007 as long as you don't do something stupid like calling her Jamie Bond and have many of the same mannerisms as James Bond...she would have to be unique individual.

At least in regards to the Craig movies, Skyfall would indicate this isn't the case since the Skyfall Lodge was said to be the Bond family residence.

OK, I'll just throw this out there because I think she's a great actor.  But this might work too I think.  Granted, you'd have to tone down some of the action scenes but having Bond more brains than brawn could be interesting.

It's just very hard to separate the character of James Bond from his existence as a man.  While each Bond actor has played the part a little differently, masculinity isn't just character background - it's at the core of who he is and how he's played.

Contra that the Doctor, where the character's gender is just background - it matters that the Doctor is clever, that he regenerates, that he uses a sonic screwdriver, and that he has the T.A.R.D.I.S., but it doesn't really matter what the character has going on downstairs.

This. The doctor can justifiably be made a woman. Jame Bond, however, would be pure pandering.

Yeah, Bond is a masculine figure by nature. I can't imagine that Ian Fleming would see otherwise.

First they cast Starbuck as a woman, and I said nothing, as Battlestar Galactica was poorly produced 70's schlock.

Next they cast Doctor Who as a woman, and I said nothing, as Doctor Who has been around for over fifty years and is desperately stale.

Then they said they would cast  007 as a woman, and I said nothing, as it's really not that bad of an idea after all.

James Bond is usually portrayed as an avatar of masculinity, which is, I think, a big part of the reason why 'normal' guys obsessively compare Bond rankings. Now, I mean, usually that sort of behaviour is limited to insane trufans; the only comparable behaviour I can really imagine is Kirk v Picard, and even then you're pushing into obsessive nerd territory -- and if you hear some guys arguing at a bar over whether it's Janeway or Sisko as #3, you're clearly in a hotel hosting a Star Trek convention.

But pretty much all guys seem to carry a mental ranking of Bonds, which they occasionally reappraise as time goes on, and which they're eager to share and compare to other guys' Bond rankings. I think that's because Bond is so intimately bound up with masculinity. By saying you prefer Connery, Brosnan, Moore, or Craig, you're saying what you think an ideal man is: Suave and stoic? Well-groomed and tasteful? Charming and hedonistic? Rough-edged and unpretentious? Which generation's ideal of masculinity do you aspire to?

A female double-0 could be fine, I think. I'd be open to the idea. But it wouldn't really be James Bond, I think; I couldn't really imagine it being anything other than a subversive deconstruction of what it is to be James Bond, and while that might be interesting to watch on its own merits, it really wouldn't be the same thing as watching a James Bond movie.

(In fact, I can't imagine a property that would be harder to cast across gender. Even a female Batman -- as distinct from Batgirl -- would be easier to pull off. Hell, even a female George Washington would be an easier sell.)
